  • Hi guys! hope you enjoyed this week’s video! This week I dive into the world of Viking/Pagan Facebook groups, and how easily they spread misinformation. I will also explain how it is to function online as an openly queer pagan. If you have any questions/anything to say, feel free to ask in the comments!

    Great video, especially enjoyed hearing about the sweater lol. I'm also a gen z who likes facebook as a more practical social media, so I can relate to the struggle of the obtuse older folk ruining the fun of the platform. Thanks for speaking about it. And as an aside, from one trans dude to another, you look fine as hell my guy 👍

      Thank you for the compliments!! And I'm glad I'm not the only one who things Facebook is a bit more practical haha, but of course every social media has its crazy people 😭

    I've also noticed that a lot of people who leave nasty comments, especially on videos of queer creators, don't want to have a rational discussion (because the first rule in the "how to be a bigot" handbook is "throw reality and facts out of the window"), and thing that sucks is that unless the creator sees the comment and removes it, which doesn't always happen cause creators can't spend all their time moderating, you can either engage with the bigot in which you will just waste your time and energy arguing with someone who doesn't operate on a stable belief system and might even just be trolling, or you leave them be and that means that the target of their bigotry isn't safe in this queer online space anymore which is just shit. My only solution is to insult and humiliate the bigot, because 1) that's the only thing that will actually challenge a bigot, 2) that's the only way to neutralise their nasty comment and 3) it's more important to keep queer spaces safe for queer people, people of colour and women than to entertain bigots. The problem is that TH-cam doesn't like it when you insult people on the platform even though the only way to deal with a fool who refuses to be reasoned with is to mock them. I'm not a saint and I don't have the patience of a saint. If people don't want to be called stupid then they should stop acting like they're stupid

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah exactly this. It also happens way too many times that the reaction to the bigot gets removed/reported instead of the actual comment, which is fucked up. I've had it happen tho when people get confronted with facts and actually remove their comments, so I see that ad a win I guess, but the generic stuff like "you'll never be (insert gender)" I just don't bother interacting with. It's just digital self harm, as someone once called it... On the other hand I don't think you can just ignore and delete the negative comments, because that's like pretending it doesn't happen. Allthough I agree that the safety of queer (and honesty, any) creators and commenters online is more important than giving bigots a forum for their expression, I don't want to pretend that I don't get these comments, and sometimes people just word something badly because of a lack of knowledge of the terminology or just a bad understanding of English, which is why I want to give people a chance. But if they keep going then bye it is 😅

      Well you don't need to be a viking to be fascinated by nordic history! The vikings are only a veeery small part of the entire history, just between 200 and 300 years :) And of course learning about the history of other regions is open to everyone, doesn't matter where you're from!

    Nah bro, if some white guy from north dakota who lives up to the ideal image of a viking wants to be called a viking, hes a damn viking. Im trying to become a viking ass mf myself.
    Also, these days, if people want to say they are norse who am I to say otherwise. Modern identity politics are bonkers so I guess it works, being a different ethnicity/nationality aint the weirdest thing Ive seen relating to that.

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You realize that you wanting to be "a viking" is very much part of modern identity politics right? You are attaching present day ideals and values to an idealized view of a past culture. But if you want to call yourself a viking, then do whatever makes you happy 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with wanting to incorporate things from the past into modern life, modernity is fucked up, I agree😅

      @@TheQueerVikingBro Im saying I want the aesthetic and the strenght of one of those mfs. I already got the blood in me. I aint against using some archaic terms dude.
      Its like a japanese guy saying he wants to be a samurai ass mf and if he plays the part who am I to disagree?
      Also, whats your hair routine? Ive never seen a dude with as nice ass hair as you. I wanna know because if I finally reach the body physique I'd want some nice flowing locks too, some Harald Hairfair type shit

    • @TheQueerVikingBro
      @TheQueerVikingBro  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @JohnSmith-kt3yy honestly same, the aesthetic and the strength is really a great goal to strive for 💪
      And thank you so much! I'm so happy I got blessed with good hair! My biggest tips would be to not wash it every day as that dries it out, and remember it is not gay to use conditioner! I know there is a big stigma when it comes to hair and skin care in men, so yeah just don't be scared to use "womens" products. I've noticed that for my hair type anything containing argan oil works best!
      And I also recently started sleeping in a silk cap/bonnet and that has definitely improved my hair too, keeps it from tangling and pulling in your sleep :)

      Vikings do not exist anymore. Come on dude you are literally making other Americans, who are trying to genuinely find out about their heritage ....look like shit.

  • @xdani_thethinkingneko
    @xdani_thethinkingneko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The reason that a lot of Americans, care about our past heritage, even when we may not have as high of a percentage - he’s because of the forced assimilation that has happened, and also the forced SA of people causing the DNA to be more muddied. It’s a way for us to try to undo the damage that has been done by the systematic racism in the US. There also are people who even if their family has been here for a few generations, still have a high percentage of whatever particular DNA were talking about. Due to the fact that insular communities were away for immigrants to survive in America. They were often turned away from many businesses, so it force them to have insular societies. Also works for preservation of important culture practices.
    For example with 1/2 of my family , in my maternal grandmothers side (Technically I’m only a 25% Irish ), place(d) a strong emphasis on teaching our family’s history.Especially since at one time, being Irish was demonized in the US, that’s why there were signs like Irish no need apply. A lot of stuff like that tends to breed a sense of pride, similar to how us in the queer community have pride.
    It’s the same with my Peruvian (maternal) side too, my Papo who immigrated in the 1970s placed a big emphasis on teaching our culture to me and my sister. It was my mother who forced assimilation on us and distanced us from our culture. Which honestly made me feel an even stronger connection to it once I got older, and could actually start looking into my heritage myself.
    I felt this was necessary to say, because I see a lot of Europeans not understand why we feel the way we do about her heritage. While, do think there is something to be said about the people to say that they’re descendants of a “Cherokee princess”, the majority of people are practicing culture they were taught at home, or are trying to find out about culture that was stolen from them.(the most extreme case being of the African American people who where enslaved.) hope this helps explain the American point of view. 😊

      *** I wanted to add to a lot of people I think in Europe misunderstand when we say we are XYZ American - We are speaking about our heritage and not our nationality. I see that as a common misconception.

    • @xdani_thethinkingneko
      @xdani_thethinkingneko 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      But I definitely do want to know, that I do understand where you’re coming from about people misappropriating cultures, it’s just I see a lot of people assume that’s what all Americans are doing, when many of us actually know / did the work to found out our actual history. 😊

      @@xdani_thethinkingneko Hi, I know this actually, I'm aware of the why's and hows of European migration to America, Scandinavian migration to the state in the 19th/20th century is actually a big part of my study. And of course I get the disconnectedness and wanting to find your heritage, and I'm sure there are people who do this in a... reasonable way. Unfortunately those who are the loudest on social media like Facebook are those who go a bit overboard with the genetics stuff. In the "I am 3% Norwegian so that makes me a Viking" way
