    I remember watching a tournament years ago. Tiger was 8 shots back. TV coverage was still on him. At one point they showed him emerge from a porta potty walk over to the beverages on ice and grab a gatorade, put it back and grab a different one. The whole time you could hear applause from somewhere else on the course yet CBS kept the cameras on Tiger selecting a beverage just to see what flavor he chose. People would watch 2 hours of Tiger mowing his lawn. I'd watch 2 hours of Tiger mowing his lawn.

    There is a common misconception from people outside the game of golf. That is, that the game of golf needs another Tiger Woods to keep interest in the game. What people who don't have a genuine appreciation for the game of golf understand, is that Golf NEVER had a player like Tiger Woods before he enter into the Arena. At the height of Tigers career, he was the most recognizable Human Being on the Planet, and possibly still is, all while excelling at what most consider a boring game. Is the game of golf in good hands nowadays with this new crop of young players? You bet. Will you EVER see another Tiger Woods in your lifetime? Since it took over 200 years for a player like Tiger to Emerge, I think its safe to say NO!

    Tiger is bigger than most of the other iconic names. Most other icons had rivals that tested them. Tiger had no equal. The closest was maybe Mickelson and he won maybe 1/4 of what Tiger did. Of all the legendary names in sports, when Tiger's career is over, he has to be in the top 2 or 3, if not the top. Only other names to compare would be Jordan or Ali, but I think Tiger is #1 in terms of impact on his sport.

    It is simply impossible to overstate just how legendary Tiger Woods is. It's almost as if you need a word other than "great" to describe the magnanimity of his accomplishments within the most difficult game of golf. And then to come back the way he has, it's like moving the needle on his accomplishments at least by 15-20%. To be able to have a 26% major win rate from 1997-2008 within golf, it's just hard to explain unless you are a golfer yourself. Golf is NOT supposed to be a game like tennis where one player could be "expected" to dominate, it simply is not. Even Jack didn't dominate the game the way Tiger did. That's why the argument that Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer who ever lived holds water.

      Agree 100%. I was born in 92, so I spent my formative years watching Tiger play when he was at his most dominant. I remember watching him play with my late grandfather in Sundays. I think the greatest thing that can be said about Tiger Woods is that he made golf cool. As silly as it sounds. He was so good it made young kids like me want to go outside and play golf. He got so many people into the game that maybe wouldn’t have been otherwise. He was just different. It wasn’t an out of shape British or Scottish “gentleman,” he was of a different background and made it cool. I think he forced the sports world to carve out a place for golf on the Mount Rushmore of greats. He’s up there with Babe Ruth, Gretzky, Michael Jordan, and those types of guys.

Tiger makes golf exciting because of the everyone something great might happen. Jack Nicklaus had is following back in the day, now tiger woods has the following back again. It will be long time before we see another tiger woods play golf like he did. Just look at the records he is trying to catch 18 majors and 82 tour wins. Nobody in PGA is close to those numbers.

    There are no young players who draw you in. Tiger drew people in because he was so good and was an absolute cut-throat killer. Phil draws people because of his bold, go for it, mentality, which at any time can produce tournament winning shots or tournament losing shots, and his interaction with fans. Nicklaus drew people because of his greatness and class. Golf is in need of a new legendary player because there isn't one coming up yet.

    • @harryk8080
      @harryk8080 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will Robinson sorry Will but the likes of Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Rory will easily be in the same ball park as Phil when they’ve got tot he back end of their careers. The difference now is you have five - ten guys who are outstanding

    • @-AthleteInAction-
      @-AthleteInAction- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      They don't draw fans the way Tiger or Phil do. There are a lot of great young players, but none of them have anything unique to draw people's attention to. None of them dominate. There are no legends in the making right now, just a lot of excellent players. Tiger and Phil could be in last place but the attention they get from fans is more than the top young players combined.

    • @harryk8080
      @harryk8080 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will Robinson you have hit the nail on the head about dominating. No one dominates anymore because the standard is so much better I’m afraid. Completely agree no one will move the needle like woods ever again but you are from that era - Mcilroy has a huge pull for fans similar to that of Phil. He’s also a better golfer.

    • @-AthleteInAction-
      @-AthleteInAction- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mcilroy doesn't have near as big of a following as Mickelson. Mcilroy may be the most talented golfer today, but he doesn't have the bold play that Phil does, or the cutthroat competitive attitude of woods. Mcilroy is only interested when he is playing well. There are many excellent young players, but none of them draw fans to watch, more specifically casual fans. Tiger and phil are the last legendary players. It's not so much how much they win, it's the way they play. None of the young players today play as fearless as Tiger or Phil. Tiger and Phil can also hit shots that no one else can, or is willing to even try. Anyways, don't want to go back and forth too much with you, cause i think we just disagree on a basic point.

    Doug Ferguson hits the nail on the head. His commentary is so on point it's chilling; especially at 1:52 -2:05. Golf is at a high point right now and it's awesome!!!

    Whether he catches Jack or not pay attention....they didn't change golf courses because of Jack. Jack didn't make the other golfers richer as Tiger has. In his prime, all the others knew that they were playing for second place...Period!!!! The Tiger Effect was (is) REAL!!!

      Been a fan since '96 his game is something in words I can't describe I watch all things Tiger his game is off the charts. He still has the skills but as he has explained many times his back fusion limits his rotations so he had to figure out other ways to play. How many pro golfers could change their way of play get back on the pro tour and win???? Too many ppl criticize Tiger about his performance now but for me that's amazing in it self. 🐯

    Tiger got me into golf 20 years ago but The First Tee failed all the kids in our city by cutting resources and not making an effort to group us up the next summer. My mom could only do so much and I lost interest to play. I continue to watch Tiger off and on, but then stopped watching completely due to video and cutting up out and about with friends. 20 years later I’m now inspired by Tiger to play golf again as a means to get in shape, relax and not be bored in my 30s+. I now go to the range 2-3 times a week. He is my Legend.

      You sound like my grandson. I started watching Tiger in '96 mind you I'm a blk female but a sports lover; at 4yrs old he would go around the house hitting a plastic ball with his bat I thought nothing of it. He had a basketball at 2yrs old he was more into that. He started putting around the house again around 9 so I brought him a putting green he kept practicing; found First Tee got him into that until he was 15 he had a natural ability to play and he was good. But like you First Tee was a fail ppl used it as a babysitter I taught him how to play better bc of all the games I watched and pointers that were given. Like you he fell off bc of friends and girls🙄. I nvr thought I had a Tiger just wanted him to enjoy the sport.🐯 Fan forever.

    The simple fact is that when you watch Tiger win tournaments or Majors (hopefully 1 or 2 in 2019😁) you are literally watching Golf history being created. THATS why he’s so important and in my view the most charismatic sportsman/athlete since Muhammad Ali.

    I mean, Michael Jordan could appear at an NBA game and he would be a bigger deal than say...Lebron James. Just saying. Tiger brought golf to the mainstream because he's not only an amazing athlete with a drive to win as great as Jack ever had but also because he is just a superstar oozing with charisma.

    Never talks about Race because he realizes that the demand for racism far outweighs the supply. Ergo, if Americans are truly racist they would’ve rejected this young man right away. But it was the complete opposite because 98% of this country doesn’t GAF what color you are. Now, JUST like Tiger, we hate the sad state of affairs in the dysfunctional black community and JUST like Tiger, we know it’s 99% self inflicted!

    I think the younger guys need to become more consistent. It's hard to follow someone like Spieth when he's only in contention 5 or 6 times a year. Tiger in his prime was in contention 25 times a year. People say charisma but that's not the problem. Golf needs people to stand out. While it's good for the game that anyone that plays in these pro events can win, it's not good for fans. Fans want a rivalry or a top guy. Mcilroy or Spieth have a chance if they push forward from now. Both of them can reach double digit majors and they already have good fan bases. They just need to become household names and they can do that by winning.

      Won't happen; Tiger is Tiger hype don't make you great. Golf is hard and these players were told they could beat Tiger Woods I've watched them all come and go since '96. There will never be someone in my lifetime to play like Tiger and imma enjoy it for as long as I can. Tiger made golf a true sport and exciting. You don't hv to agree with me. 🐯

    Bottom line is that Tiger elevated the entire sport and the guys playing. There used to be guys who still had to work as course pros and other jobs who now only play golf for a living because of Tiger's influence on the game. Enjoy his brilliance while you can, it won't last forever.

    If it wasn’t for a tiger woods computer game at least ten of us wouldn’t have gotten into golf and the big money probably would have come along for the sport but him and his presence has helped golf in a big way . He deserves a prize . They give knighthoods in Britain I don’t know the American equivalent but if nick Faldo gets a knighthood tiger deserves something of equal or higher value . He really deserves it . Eighty tournaments fifteen majors and world no 1 for a long time. . Best of all time . Jack was great not forgetting him . But tiger has made the game more popular and some of the shots he’s taken over the years are just remarkable.
