One of my favorites. Tab doesn’t use pedals, just his Thinline and his clone amp. Awesome tone and improvs his solos, every show is different. Great guitarist with awesome dynamics.

A pair of Category 5 amplifiers, actually; and no pedals. If he wants a tremolo effect, he rotates the guitars volume control really fast! I've seen him live several times, and he's the real deal; and extremely funny as well. Of the last half-dozen concerts we've seen (including Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, Albert Lee, and Sonny Landreth), Tab was hands-down my wife's favorite. He is not to be missed when he comes to your town!

    • @hockeytown9647

good 'un yeah those cat 5’s are custom clone amps. Based off of two amps, one was a Twin Tweed, and I forget the other. Badass tone. He is funny. Great story teller.

We've seen Tab live a number of times over the years both here in Florida and around New Orleans. Puts on a great show! The last time we saw him play the old Rock'n'Bowl venue on the downstairs stage he swapped places and did a long drum solo which was very cool. And this was after playing Jazzfest earlier in the day. Sonny Landreth played that same stage that night. The Iguanas and Anders Osborne were upstairs but we never got there.......... Thanks for this one Fil!

Changed it himself between songs while making small talk with the audience.

Alright, so, my ex went to high school with Tab, so when we were in Louisiana for the Voice of the Wetlands Festival we got to hang out a bit. Every year for 15 years or better, Benoit has staged a free weekend festival in his home town for the sole purpose of allowing himself the chance to preach about water politics in the Mississippi delta. Great stuff, and lots of fun; we got to meet lots of top-flight players, and even to watch Tab sit in on drums, (!), with some other high school buddies. Anyhow, Tab's been a favorite since the early '90s; here's another guy that came to my attention around the same time, at the same crusty bar in Colorado: th-cam.com/video/gEy6Kbjjv6E/w-d-xo.html

My wife and i were at all 3 days of the VOW Fest this past October ("remember, cow's lives matter!). We had a great time, the music was fantastic, and although we didnt get to hang with Tab we did meet and talk with bassist Doug Wimbish on the plane ride home and in the airport, he was playing with Erik McFarland at the Fest (Doug is a very nice and generous man, volunteers to work with school kids to further their music education and appreciation).
Hey, Fil, do a piece on Erik McFarland!

Thank God for the internet. Without it I would never have heard of performers like Tab Benoit or Ruthie Foster or Eric Bibb or Joanne Shaw Taylor or Samantha Fish and many more. I guess, to a certain extent, in the artificial hierarchy of modern music, people like the one's I mentioned might be thought of as the second tier, but only if your shallow enough to think that way. The fact that I bought a brand new vehicle several years ago and still haven't turned the radio on, should tell you a lot about who I prefer listening to!
