In the mid 80s, I made copies for a court reporter, and there was no document feed or collation function. It was copy 1, move to stack 1, copy 2, move to stack 2, rinse and repeat.
So yeah, lots of OT there.

This, to me, is one of the great interviews because both Woodward and Bernstein are there together, in a less formal setting, just telling some of their stories. Incredible. I’m grateful that Colbert had both of them and just let them go. Too bad it wasn’t and hour long without commercials. Then we would have really had something. Imagine a nice, long dinner conversation with those two! OMG. Thanks Mr. Colbert.

Back then there was integrity and honour in what people did and how they reported the Truth not their stations or papers bias, but the Truth!
      It was called Honest Reporting!
Something that has been lost with the legacy media we have today. Where they can literally report lies and misinformation and people believe the BS.

*_Unlike today's "journalists" and yes, I'm using the term journalists very losely here."_*
That's not actually very fair. I don't think you can tar them all with the same one-size-fits-all brush. In our recent federal election (Australia), we had all kinds of different reporters working on it, from all different corners of the media. There were people from radio, TV, newspapers and those working for online. They varied in quality a lot. The ones who were following politicians on the road were a mixed bag. But by and large, those people were expected to produce virtually hourly updates. One of the traps of this campaign was asking "gotcha" questions - usually something involving detail that the person may or may not know. In the first week, they caught the Opposition leader (who would go on to win) on the first day of the campaign with a question he should have known the answer to. They did it to all parties and got a few good strikes. That then became the theme of this year's campaign: tripping people up. It was undignified to say the best of it.
At the same time, there were senior reporters working from head office in Canberra who were doing all the serious work. They might have been putting out one article a day or one a week, depending on who they were and what they were assigned to do. These are the quality reporters, like Woodward and Bernstein. They were given free reign over what they wrote and it was usually well worth reading.
Finally, there were the pundits who varied considerably in both quality and quantity. I could go into detail but it's not worth it.
In the last week of the campaign, a reporter called Laura Tingle - who in my opinion was the best on the campaign - wrote from her Canberra office about the low-balling effect of the "gotcha" questions and how it undermined the quality of the coverage. She was 100% right. It helped nobody's understanding and just served to feed the moronic "we v they" mentality of a lot of voters. But what was missing was simply the amount of pressure the on the road guys were under to produce content.
And that's the case across the board.
No traditional media outlet is anywhere near as profitable as it was in 1974. I wish that wasn't true but I'm afraid it is. Woodward and Bernstein are probably no longer working full time any more and are given free reign to cover whatever they like and get paid on a commission basis. That doesn't mean they get told what to write. They wouldn't likely work that way and nobody else in their position would either.

    • @notme2day
      @notme2day 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thethirdman225 honestly I'd be happy if that were true that media outlets weren't as profitable as they were in '74. Media here in the US and is nothing but corporate. Billions of dollars a year. They weren't making that kind of money in '74.
Journalist on major outlets don't actually report facts anymore. All the company's do is spin a narrative they want you to hear and their journalist do what they're told.
That's why I watch independent journalist and content creators who actually back up, with evidence, what they're saying. They don't have bosses telling them what or how to say anything, and because of that the goverment here is trying to shut them up and shut them down under a BS commission. All so the public doesn't know what the truth is, only what they want to tell you the truth is.
Hope there is Australia you are not facing that.

      @@notme2day
*_"Media here in the US and is nothing but corporate. Billions of dollars a year."_*
It's a huge market. But back in 1974, they sold a lot more newspapers and a lot more advertising than they do now. It's the same everywhere. People get their news (or um... information) from the internet, not from traditional media outlets. Reporters produced one story a day, not three and the pace was much slower.
*_"Journalist on major outlets don't actually report facts anymore."_*
That's just way too simplistic. Just because everyone else says it doesn't make it right. Sorry but I can't think of another - perhaps more polite - way of putting it. Let me put it this way: reporting "facts" by themselves is impossible. Nobody would read or watch.
Then there's the notional difference between then and now. With the amount of news output these days, yeah, not everything is pure news anymore. Instead of one bulletin per day, most newsrooms are producing three or thereabouts. That's because in most media organisations, news is one of the only departments that makes any money.
High demand, low resources... different priorities. Besides, news organisations use focus groups to fine tune their content. So in fact, most newsrooms are just giving their viewers what they want.
*_"All the company's do is spin a narrative they want you to hear and their journalist do what they're told."_*
Not in any organisation I've ever worked in. Fox might. But if they hire their preferred people, they don't have to tell them anything. The bottom line is that news outlets know what their viewers want. They know them really well. If they didn't, organisations like Fox, OANN and Newsmax couldn't survive. Look what happened to Fox's ratings when they called the election for Biden. Everyone ditched them.
They reported the facts and nobody wanted to hear them.
*_"That's why I watch independent journalist and content creators who actually back up, with evidence, what they're saying."_*
They also have no duty of accountability and far lower requirements for accuracy. When was the last time a civilian reporter issued an apology? Don't worry: I use them too but they have no requirement to get both sides of the story.
*_"They don't have bosses telling them what or how to say anything, and because of that the goverment here is trying to shut them up and shut them down under a BS commission."_*
      What?
*_"All so the public doesn't know what the truth is, only what they want to tell you the truth is."_*
      The "truth" is not absolute.

Episode 3 is hilarious: John Dean (played by Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey) is bumbling around trying to destroy break-in documentation, that eventually he gives to Christopher Gray, director of FBI, who destroys them in his backyard. The cast is excellent throughout. I did not know G. Gordon Liddy was a Nazi aficionado. Libby's beleaguered assistant broke a lot of the story to the two FBI investigators. These gentlemen are very interesting to listen to. I remember back in the early 80’s having “homework” over the summer break in high school. Each summer break “homework” was reading certain books. “All The Presidents Men” was one of the first ones. Upon returning to school in the fall, my class had to take a test about what we read. I was fascinated by the book. I need to read it again and some of their other works. Thank you gentlemen for your hard work! You gentlemen are brilliant.

From an era when a good, real Journalist could make a huge difference in the history of a Nation. Carl was Spot On when he said that Goldwater told Nixon: “and you don’t have mine”, and that is the difference between the GOP then and now. Not to mention that during the Nixon Administration, Education was valued and Politicians were bright, educated, and knew the Constitution. They wouldn’t have let Boebert into the Steno pool, much less Congress, but…again…this is the level of depravity the Republicans have sunk to. Who would have ever thought that a multi-bankrupted, failed NY elite, schmuck of a real estate “developer” would be the death of American Democracy. It beggars belief.

It’s kind of the American dream:
Slumlord’s son drags the rest of the the country into the gutter by unleashing his sewer trash base onto a major political party
Then those party leaders line up to suckle on his teats for a sliver of his power and the approval of that same sewer trash base.

Canuckmom1958: You know, Richard Nixon actually committed an act of treason during the Vietnam War. While Nixon was running for President in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson wanted to begin new peace talks between the North and South to try to end the war within the next year or 2 (and some believe that this could have worked had Vice President Hubert Humphrey won in 1968). However, Nixon secretly contacted the leaders of both sides in Vietnam and basically told them to not make any deal with Johnson and wait until after the election, because if Nixon won he promised to provide both with a better deal which (unknown to the public at the time) was his "secret plan" as he called it. According to the U.S. Constitution, Treason (which is the ONLY crime fully defined within the document) is providing aid or comfort to an enemy that we are fighting during a time of war. And even when President Johnson called Nixon to confront him on this, Johnson knew Nixon was obviously lying when Nixon said that he wasn't preventing Johnson's new peace talks from happening, but Johnson couldn't do anything about it. So yeah, Richard Nixon committed an actual act of treason but the public didn't know about this potentially damaging piece of evidence that could hurt him as President and the United States when they had voted for him in 1968, and it's thanks to this action by Nixon that the Vietnam War lasted an additional 5 years and costs thousands more American lives.
