Oh man, they definitely improved since 2016! Their adaptation of Hello My Baby is probably my favourite, glad to see them do it again! AND RYAN RAPPED!
I noticed that in the rap, David Zimmerman says "that's the kind of gal who can be my pal", while Ryan says "that's the kind of girl who can be my pearl", and I don't know, I find it kinda cute
That tag is the best they've sounded hands down, everything just worked and sounded like a smooth caramel lake you can feel and taste. Absolute gold, can't wait to see what the new bari sounds like in BHS competitions!
Oh, to be the fly on the wall of the rehearsal where one of them (probs Joey, let’s be real) came up with the idea for Joey to get punched in the head during the ‘50s rock ‘n roll. Nice touch.
It’s definitely much cleaner, but not as fun :( Still great though! Edit: I take it back. The overtones in that ending are so freaking gorgeous that it makes the whole song worth it *melts*
Joey on washboard, Jake on double bass (or a string, a broom handle, and a bucket), Ryan on clogs, Jackson on...what? Spoons? Fiddle? Second washboard?
okay the end caught me. reason one is bc of how long Jackson held that note, reason two is how Joey’s voice stood out at the end, and three and when Ryan descended his voice when they were ending the song. Jake’s bass is just cool. I love the NewFangled Four❤
They perform all over the country. And still compete in the international competition every year in the hopes of getting 1st. In 5 years they went from 16th to 6th. So hopefully they can get it within another year or two
@@JBergmansson They can't control what they do outside of competition, of course. But, if any of them want to compete, they have to join a group without any of the other three. So all it takes is one singer choosing to compete, they'd be spending most of their time practicing and touring in their new group, and not really have time for NF4.
The tag is the best i have ever heard NF4 sound. You only hear such perfect intonation in live performances from the best of the best. The pitch bend arrival into the chord at 10:45 was so perfectly timed by Joey, Jake, and Ryan that the first time I heard this i could do nothing but miserably fail at picking my jaw up off the floor. And Joey doing those last two notes in his chest voice was such a great choice and was pulled off so excellently. I don't think he's done it in any of their other publicly available performances, but it really elevates the tag in my opinion. I wish they performed this song with Marcus but I don't think they do (at least i haven't found any publicly available videos of them performing it with him).
To answer your 4 year old question (and anyone else who stumbles by later!), those are their Collegiate gold medals. They won the International Collegiate Barbershop Quartet Contest in 2013, only a year after they started singing as a quartet.
I like the first rendition better except it didn't include Ryan's rap. Combine his rap with the other comedy additions in the first time. Love you guys - Marcus too🎉😊
That's an interesting question. The comp video from Jul 20, 2016 is at a higher sound level. Is that what you are referring to? Also, it was optiimised for amplification in mono with X/Y microphone pattern near to the performers, and requrired additional microphones to capture the audience reactions and mix them in for the recording. It also captures a sound that has been reinforced by foldback/monitor speakers. In my video, the microphones you see on the top of the stand (also in X/Y for amplification in mono) were not used for my recording. The second set of microphones on the stage are what you're listening through. They have larger diaphragms and are positioned in a simplified binaural pattern for optimal headphones compatibility, and were further away from the performers - capturing an ambient stereo sound that is more akin to what someone in the front row might experience live - including the room's acoustics and audience reactions. I didn't do any processing with a graphic equaliser either - it is exactly what the microphones heard. Pros and cons? Let me know what you think.
anyone else like their blend a bit more when joey is cheating the tenor part at the beginning? he’s taking the zimmerman and stenberg approach, which i sometimes prefer
Not sure if this is exactly what happened, but at 8:16 Jake played... THAT THING on the pitch pipe. I have a theory that he used relative pitch to figure out the "tonal center" (more like.. atonal center) that Ryan was... orbiting around, lets put it that way, and at around 8:20 he looked for that general area on the pitch pipe and started playing THAT OTHER THING (8:22) which is obviously an imitation of Ryan, and a very good one at that!
Huh you can tell Ryan wasn't feeling it any more with the Newfangled Four... there's an intense amount of separation from the rest of the group whenever they break that wasn't there on earlier performances...
You can read their bios at www.newfangledfour.com/get-to-know-us/ Also, if you listen on headphones, the (simplified) binaural stereo (recorded from the floor microphones) should help you hear who's singing what part.

Because of how the phrasing went, he did that on a breath that happened about two beats prior which adds a second.
