Hot damn... another awesome choice. I think I am noticing more editing choices? * chef's kiss * You are really polishing your dynamic here and me likey! I appreciate your use the zoom sparingly... sometimes people overdo that and don't let their expressions speak for how the song is making them feel. Nice video, Stax!
Drummer here. Danny is in the God-like status of drumming. I’m glad you enjoyed this. It’s funny how you mentioned it because Danny is known as “The Octopus.”
Danny is your favorite drummers favorite drummer. So in this song Danny is playing 4 separate beats and time signatures. Each arm and each leg is playing separate time signatures at the sametime. There is maybe less than 10 people in the world that can do that at this level. You were spot on calling an Octopus.
There are far more people that can do that, you can find tons of polyrhythmic freaks on youtube, and he isn't playing 4 separate time signatures simultaneously, ever. He's usually just playing 2. Pneuma is one of Tool's most straightforward songs actually.
I rarely, if ever, use the word "flabbergasted", but when I saw these guys live I was left FLABBERGASTED by Danny's drum skills. He is SO frickin good it will blow your mind! Tool is golden and timeless. I appreciate your musical journey! Keep going man!
I had heard that Danny joined them, cause he felt bad for them, because they couldn't keep a drummer. If that's true, BEST decision ever!! Danny is absolutely incredible! Another god-tier drummer you can check out is Rick Allen, dubbed, The Thunder God. He's from the band Def Leppard. Watch their video of Pour Some Sugar On Me to catch glimpses of him in action.
Pneuma means the “ creative spirit”. I’m shocked that melodic intro hadn’t been sampled. Polyrhythms are Danny’s stick in trade. He studied percussion in India and Africa. Each arm and foot are playing different rhythms. Do you hear those African beats near the end? You are on it! His nickname is “ Octopus”. ❤
The first minute and a half is great here on several levels. Perceptions changed. I wonder if anyone brought up the idea of tool or rock music back in the day you wouldn't of had these thoughts but look at the smile on your face and the curiosity etc. Magic
This is my 3rd reaction vid of TOOL in a row from you✌️ My 7 yr old just started drum lessons and I’ve installed D. Carey as his online teacher/mentor lol 🌀🙏

I just watched Danny play for 2 hours live in concert here in Austin,, about 2 weeks ago. It was awesome! Ray Luzier from Korn drum cam for 'Freak On A Leash' is just as good!
Finaly you did it and watched this drum video. So you did something good to yourself. I can see that on your face. It's a wonderful experience to watch this drum video. I can watch it again and again
impossible not to bear your teeth for the entire second half, any human on the planet with a sense of rythym or passion for art understands the care that goes into something like this
I saw them live earlier this month. and hot dang those drums will beat the hell out of you. I've never seen them live before. They all got tricks up their sleeves. He did have a Dallas Mavs shirt on. I don't know if that's just a thing he does or coincidence. Hearing the audio and seeing them live is quite different. Maybe its the lack of music knowledge I have, but I wouldn't have guessed some of the sounds you hear are played by someone you weren't expecting. It was so loud. Everyone around me was standing up....not me I had the perfect amount of short and skinny people in front of me, I could see the whole stage and lean back and feel the vibrations in the seat. I got me a free back, butt and leg massage. lololol
Danny is from Lawrence, KS. The home of Kansas University and the Jayhawks. He is a life long basketball fan and has custom jerseys for most NBA teams and even KU. It’s not uncommon to see him at KU basketball games in Allen Fieldhouse. If I’m not mistaken, this video was shot in Boston so he was wearing his Celtics jersey. It’s funny you mention he is like an octopus, his nickname is “the octopus”.
Dunno where you are, brother. But the next time Tool comes to Charlotte, NC area, I’ll spot you a ticket so you can experience one of the most unbelievable, mind blowing few hours of your life you’ll never forget.
If you get a chance to see them live, do it! One of the best shows you will ever see. In have seen them 3x and they are amazing! One of the few bands that actually sound better live.
Danny is a huge basketball fan. He played ball in high school and he’s a huge Kansas (if I’m not mistaken) fan. He wears the jersey of whichever state/city they play in. So that was probably Boston or somewhere in Mass. I just saw them play in Boston back in Nov and he was in a Paul pierce jersey except with Carey on the back.
For the longest time, I didn't like Tool until I started paying attention to their lyrics. I've mentioned them before, I think, but you should really check out Primus. They're kinda like Tool on laughing gas. (They do the theme song to South Park)

I love watching this video, I've lost track of how many times I've seen it now. I love it for two reasons, the first being the obvious, Mr. Carry is absolutely brilliant and this percussion is pure genius. The second is a little more personal: My dad was a drummer, I saw him play innumerable times (he was a blues man). He passed away 7 years ago last month. Watching Danny play, everything about how he plays, every mannerism and every movement, is exactly how my dad used to play. The way he holds his head, the way he hits the crash, the ease with which he makes it look, it's my dad with a different face (and haircut, dad wasn't a young man, haha!).
Gotta do Moby Dick Live (Royal Albert Hall 1970) by Led Zeppelin. Another unbelievable solo! He was only 21 or 22. Compare the two solos. Bonham is one funky drummer!
A master at what he does. There's a reason he's called The Octopus, and he showed why in this performance. Good luck finding a bad TOOL song....try Crawl Away and Invincible if you haven't.
Not THE goat, but definitely the best at polyrhythms in the game right now. Danny is a beast! My vote will always go to Neil Peart & John Bonham as THE goats though 🥁 great reaction
Tool is great but if you want to hit 10K check out Rush.....3 of the best Musicians on the planet that happen to be in one band...Drumming even better than this if you can believe it

BJ Williams. BJ's brother Darren used to be my brother in law.
Danny Carey is really tall, he also wanted to be a basketball player. And he was like 60 when this was recorded.
Wowww didn’t know that
Yeah, he's 6'5-6'6... When he and Maynard kinda dap each other up at the end of a show it's kinda funny...
Massive Kansas boy, and Kansas fan.... Wanna say his go-to is a Kansas hoops kit
