I made a very similar farm, the "Greydwarf Rehabilitation Center" - To separate cubs automatically, my wolf pit is lower than the spawner pit. The barrier between them is a 26 degree stair that ends up off the ground around a half wall height. Grown wolves will aggro and jump over on their own, cubs stay in the lower pit.
Yo Broadbent, small tip I've picked up when moving wolves. Use your shield and hold block while walking into them. If necessary you can roll into them for a bigger push. Seems to help a bit.
Very nice build! Here are a couple of optimization suggestions: 1. Trap the initial spawns in a nearby pit, so you could build in peace 2. Raise an earth pillar through the spawner. It will make it indestructible 3. Place some lighting in the killing pit. It renders the regular gray dwarfs passive, so the wolves will survive longer, and gives some usage to the resin. 4. Didn't test this last thing, so it might not work, but what if the the buffer ledge is covered by 26° beams/roofing/stares, opening towards the spawner, so the cubs could fit on the ledge, and are pushed by the roofing into the pit as soon as they grow
It all started with your "Raft" series for me. Then I basically binge watched the "Subnautica" series. The "Among Trees" videos were top quality. After all this, I don't know how this channel isn't at least at 1 million. Keep up the great content
Brilliant! Nice technical engineering build for this farm! I've been playing Valhiem for basically 3-4 months, so these tidbits of knowledge are worth more than gold coin to me right now. *Liked and Subbed.
To push animals around more easily, Press left ctrl (or any other key you bound to sneak) to sneak. Then press spacebar to roll. Its the easiest and fastest way to push animals around, other than using a harpoon which might have slingshot issues. And on the note of slingshot issues. I used your boar breeder design to make a self filling boar cannon. It can shoot boars out of render distance (only works with 2 star boars because they have more hp to survive a harpoon hit)
- Raids do happen around workbenches. That's the point of them, to attack you and your base. - If you dig a little bit deeper you can keep the breeding wolves at ground level and killing chamber wolves wont aggro to outside mobs. (assuming you don't do workbenches all around. Since every time it rains they will take damage, well roofs are easy to make but I personally don't like the look of so many roofed workbenches around. ) - Doing walls on the killing chamber is not a good idea since they will take damage and eventually break even if it's made of stone. Not to mention entire objective is to farm stone, not to spend more. :) Natural terrain on the other hand is completely unbreakable by mobs even by Trolls and Bosses. - Speaking of natural terrain being unbreakable, doing a perimeter around your spawner from natural walls or moats (Elevate the ground 4-5 meters or just plain dig a 4-5 meter square moat around the base) your Spawner will be completely safe.
I was thinking about that use of stone to make the pit, but I'm guessing he just wants the builds to be aesthetic as well instead of just functional. Same as with the core farm.
I have base on the border of the plains and dark forest. I will get random goblin spans in the dark forest and they will kill trolls, and grayling which leaves me a ton of wood and stone without actually making a farm ;)
I wonder if you just get a critical mass of wolves in the pit if it will make it so you can basically just leave it as an afk farm. And if you have enough wolves in the pit already, you might be able to just drop the pups right in and they'll have a chance to grow up because the other wolves will kill the greydwarves fast enough
@24:28 It won't completely prevent raids, they will still trigger, but if they can't get to you, nothing will happen. Like when you had those events on your island base, if they can't find an open spawn spot close, they won't appear and you just wait out the event timer (stay in the red circle).
"This is maybe the third time I get a raid..." No biggie. I'll be here crying in "gets raided every time she's building something anywhere" I got raided seven times while building my swamp outpost... I get raided roughly once a day. I'm not jealous, just...bitter! XD
Nice little farm to get supplies. Every extra bit of wood & stone is gonna help. We’re going to need so much to build a spectacular mountain base to go with that bridge. Betting you already have some ideas on that . Cool beans. 👍🏻
I think workbenches like that will eventually get taken out by mobs wandering around, but a simple enclosure (6 walls, 2 roof tiles) does the trick, they don't seem to get mad at walls lol. I did something like that around Yagluth so I wouldn't have to deal with fulings haha
Btw, breeding farms like this no longer work. They need to walk around X m before they breed. They also need X space, so once they reach a number according to their pen, they will stop breeding. The pen is "full."
For dropping the new wolves into the pit, using gates opening to push them down into it might be a better idea. Shrink the holding area a bit and use the act of the gates swinging open to shove the wolves down.
Looks good but the more wolves you have in the pit, the quicker the Greydwarves die, the less damage the wolves take and the better chance they have of healing up and lasting longer.
If you add a farm for carrots/turnips and a boar breeder you can tend to the fields and feed the boars instead of purely afk farming. That way you get endless meat too. Then it can be really fun to build a massive base nearby, all the while replenishing your supply of wood and stone and never running out lol.
Yea that's what I was thinking. Though if you throw them food, won't they procreate and might climb on top of each other and destroy the nest? Or what's the limit for number of wolves in such a small space?
I only throw in 20 meat every other RL day and ive not had any issues.. the few pups that do breed up replace the 1 or 2 death loss. the rest of the time the meat just goes to healing the wolves themselves
A safer way to disable the spawner is to lure the 3 first spawns into a pit close to it and keep them there while you build the farm. It won't respawn any while they are alive. I decided to build mine with loxen (the howling wolves would drive me daft), but of course they can't be bred (yet), so I have to make sure I keep them alive. Which is probably no problem at all, considering the relative strength of greydwarves and loxen, but still, I'm a bit worried. Anyway, it's for SCIENCE. ;) Just getting the loxen to the farm was quite the adventure; got a bit of troll hide on the way (if you ever wondered who would win a fight between a troll and a lox, wonder no more). It's real good to see that it will be well worth the effort; that's a nice haul after 30 min.
I have an idea, instead of digging a pit - why not just put the hearths on the ground around the spawn point ..... then dig out a moat / trench around that. Since they can't jump, they'll kurplode on the hearths and they won't attack anything (assuming they don't try to hit the hearths). When you need wood you can just build 1 floor panel temporarily to collect stuff (or just try to grab it across the moat/trench thingy).
I believe you can shift the wolf breeder further away from the spawner. and have a long hallway of wolves to fall into. The cubs will be far away from the spawner. And you can have gate pens to get the #ofwolves to follow you then close behind them to keep the cubs in. You now charge into the pit with all your wolves following you and then you jump out of the pit and AFK until all your current wolves die out.
I sorted this out. If you make the pit deeper and larger and chuck in like 15-20 wolves you won't lose a single wolf. At least I haven't in about 10+ hours of afking because there is at least 5 wolves always instant attacking anything that spawns. For the breeder (if needed, which you probably won't) I built it three 4 meter log poles away so 12 meters from the edge of the pit and they won't aggro.
dig all the way down. seriously. if you dig down to the bottom it has a raised platform thats one half floor above the max dig dept, just enough to get a large wall in. also if you have the breeder going into a seperate room thats connected by a doorway the wolfes will run around and just go nuts when the spawner spawns. also you dont need to keep building a floor, build a roof and destroy one block and it will serve as an on off switch for your grinder. i set mine up with an auto feeder throw in some boars and when they die the woves will eat the meat or you can collect it and use it to further feed and make even more wolves till you can just leave the meat and oh yeah they die after a while but if they die long as the feeder is supported by raised up land eventually they will destroy the benches and just wander the space. just wish the wolves would stop howling, nothing lags a game like 100 wolves hwoling
i would love to see Irongate do something with the World Tree. I want more lore and mystery around the land, The World Tree seems like a good place to go. In my first ever playthrough, i had not done any research or looked at anything about the game. Once i saw the World Tree i set the goal of my playthrough (with my brother) to get to the world tree. So as we progressed, we got maxed out gear and plenty of food. We head towards the World Tree base thinking something cool is sure to be there. Only to get to the edge of the world in the Ashlands to see that the world tree was just apart of the Skybox. It felt amazing to have journied to the end of the land, but a dissapointment to find the tree wasn't real. Hopefully once the game is nearing the end of its unfinished days, we see the world tree change into something cool for those curious cats.
I know this is super late, but I think if you throw some meat down into the kill zone, the wolves can heal themselves a bit which prolongs the time each one survives
You don't really need to worry about the cubs once you have enough wolves the greydwarfs don't have time to kill them of fast enough Edit: (my pit had like 20 wolves)
As far as I know raids happen even with workbenches. I have an area full of workbenches and the skeleton surpise and foul smell from the swamp still happen.
anything we can build does not work as a barrier to stop them from being scared. even raised terrain.. it's all about distance away from it just like the breed limit per space its like 10 meters away is the aggro area if i recall.
Mine away leaving a mountain top allowing wild ice spawns; feeding a wolf farm cobbled to sluice spawns to the farm, but, i think you've said this idea already.
haven't finished watching the video yet but i think you possibly over thought the wolf thing. I built a similar setup using your wolf breeder design and the wolf population within the kill zone is so high the pups have no issues growing up
This was a great build. I still can't believe what a source of wood, stone and resin this is. Didn't incorporate the breeder at the spawner mainly for asthetic reasons. Question, I find that my stone walls in the pit are in constant need of repair. Not sure if it's wolf attack or greydwarfs. They don't last long as we have 6 wolves in the pit. Curious to know if u have had the same issue with damage?
I think only adult wolves charge at enemies. Perhaps you should destroye the stairs under the breeder and even make a 45 degree ramp, so that wolves could get down into the pit when they mature?

Could you try making a step in the wolf buffer zone? I think the small ones wouldnt be able to walk over a 2m pole laying on the right hight but the grown up wolves could. Just an idea
The brazier is a fire source, similar to camp fire or hearth. The difference is - it was omitted from the patch and doesn't take damage (yet). Nothing to do with the smoke
Just throw a little meat into the pit, so the wolves can heal up. They will heal when they are happy. Isn't that easier than having to replace them after a while?
Hey I learned you can build UNDER the tree boss' platform, too !!!!! "Reverend Shane's Ewok Treefort" has switched to These Woods, I believe. Instead of dark, wet, swamp. :-P
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but if you dig a hole and get all 3 spawns (the spawner only makes 3 at a time) stuck in the hole, you can freely go about your business without worrying.
Experimenting with those farms seems fun, but if it was mainly for wood it seems so much less effort to just plant 40-50 trees, cut them down a bit later and you got a cart full of wood, enough for a long time, including charcoal...
What if you made the pit out of pure terrain? No repairs needed... I also think you can dump cubs directly into the pit, after you have some baselune population of old wolfs(10+?) cubs won't be dying fast enough...
I have no idea how realistic an idea it is, but do you think there could be a way to farm Oozers for scrap iron? I've no idea their spawn mechanics or anything so idk if it would be possible. If there is a way you seem like the kinda guy who could work it out
I made a very similar farm, the "Greydwarf Rehabilitation Center" - To separate cubs automatically, my wolf pit is lower than the spawner pit. I'm sure it's been mentioned, but if you dig a hole and get all 3 spawns (the spawner only makes 3 at a time) stuck in the hole, you can freely go about your business without worrying.
Use campfire, not wolfs, if u use campfire u can kill all slower but effective.
Experimenting with those farms seems fun, but if it was mainly for wood it seems so much less effort to just plant 40-50 trees, cut them down a bit later and you got a cart full of wood, enough for a long time, including charcoal...
Bro, you need to do some blood puddin.
Do nests float? I thought I had to leave ground underneath them...
*Harvests 200 wood from being afk for 30-40 minutes* PRETTY DARN GOOD. Thats like 4 minutes of woodchopping lmao.
It's for stone, wood is an extra
What happens when you plant the seeds you get from killing the monsters ?
about to go to sleep
BB has a new upload
sleep can wait :)
thanks m8
Make sure to put a roof over the wood breeder
Wow I can't wait to make a greydwarf v2 farm on my server
What if you made the pit out of pure terrain? No repairs needed... I also think you can dump cubs directly into the pit, after you have some baselune population of old wolfs(10+?) cubs won't be dying fast enough...
using the fire instead looks less painful
I have no idea how realistic an idea it is, but do you think there could be a way to farm Oozers for scrap iron? I've no idea their spawn mechanics or anything so idk if it would be possible. If there is a way you seem like the kinda guy who could work it out
