Nice Review. I wanted to add that you can use the chest strap HR monitor for more accurate results with the 235. Most reviews for any fitness watch with a wrist based optical HR sensor report similar results to what you have discovered here with the 235. However, the wrist sensor is nice for the all day activity tracking and sleep tracking. I would suggest that anyone looking for better HR results during an actual workout, use the chest strap during the workout.
+David Cramblett Straps are becoming dinosaurs. If used correctly the 225 and 235 units record BPM as accurately as any strap. I think it is probably more operator error than in the watch.
It is called the Garmin fore "runner" . It never claimed that the heart rate monitor work well with those things, like weight training. It is well known that no optical sensor works well for those activities.
About the heart rate sensor while lifting weights, do a set and check the HR during your rest. For us humans who ABHORD wearing a bra-like device, the 235's HR ability is actually quite nice.
I do calisthenics on top of running so I could be greedy and request stats for push-ups but for me, this purchase is strictly for giving a better prediction for how many calories I burned during a run and especially for keeping me in my desired training zone. So it doesn't do the dishes but I have a dishwasher for that ;)
If scratches on the HR is of concern, place a hand towel under the device or snag a case for the device. This beauty should be on your wrist at all other times so this concern, I find, is largely unfounded.
Hi! Great review! I've been reading about Garmin trying to improve the battery time with Firmware updates. Have you experienced any changes to the battery life with 24/7 use?
Awesome detailed video. I just got the 235. I wanted to know more about it. Only thing I’m not sure about is how to use the watch while weight training/body weight training . I have a couple of HR chest straps.
Great review! I enjoy bodyweight/weight training, running and cycling. I was disappointed by the poor HR accuracy with exercises involving your arms. Is there a watch/fitness tracker that you would recommend for this type of training? Thanks so much for the review!
+Doug Pancoast Thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it. If you liked the FR235 generally, you could get the FR230 with the HR belt strap. If you want to get away with straps you could use one of the Mio ANT Optical HR wrist sensors and pair it with your preferred supported running/cycling watch. The Lifebeam Smart Hat might be interesting if you want something completely different :). I hope this helps.
I have a MIO Alpha 2 and switch to this. Alpha 2 is not accurate at all for diatance but is reliable for HR when running and other activities. if you want only a HR it's good.
So here a few flaws for anyone interested in buying one of this. 1. Start/Stop recording button is very sensitive, so you can, without realising , pause or stop recording your run. Worst thing is you don't even realised because there is nothing to alert you of this. 2. Display is really poor, specially in low light conditions. 3. Music control buttons are pretty much useless while you are running and recording a run. 4. Going from one function to another using the buttons while running is difficult and tiresome. You really have to stop to change or access some of these functions. 5. Bluetooth signal is really poor, connection get lost quite easily if your phone is too far from it.
Nice video! I dont know very much about optical heart rate monitor, but I'm wondering if the accuracy of FR235 heart rate monitor (I think it's called Elevate by Garmin) can be improve by future software update from Garmin? or the accuracy is limited by the optical heart rate monitor itself? compared to Garmin FR225, I've seen many reviews saying the heart rate monitor, which they said made by Mio is quite accurate.
+Daniel Harith Thanks. That is a great question. The reality is that I do not know. Being that Garmin is using the same exact sensor on the Vivosmart HR, the FR235 and now (January 2015) the Fenix 3 (Top end device from Garmin) I believe they are happy enough with the sensor. That gives me hope that they will continue working to ensure the sensor performs as well as possible. I have a future plan of creating a Optical HR sensors explained video where I explain the technology and give tips on how to ensure the sensor performs as well as possible. I hope this helps and let me know if you find any other information :)
I was about bouying new watch like 955 or something like that because I have 235 since 2017, but now I think I am gonna save some money and continue to use 235 for a little while :) thnx
Hi thank you for your comment. I never tried the fitbit surge so I can't tell for sure. However feature wise the FR235 is the clear winner. In general I would imagine fitbit surge is the best activity tracker while the FR235 is the best running watch.
Thanks for asking. It's not really meant for that but the optical heart rate is good enough to give you a decent (not great) reading of your heart rate and calories during your workout.
Thanks for your video. I am not sure what buttons you are selecting since your fingers are covering the opposite buttons as you push them. So sorry! Could you verbalize which buttons you are selecting? Thanks again!
Hi, how can I change the date? Stuck on 22/06 I opened the gps outside to sinch but only got me to 28/06 and today is the 29/06. List all the data of course.
Thank you for all the information, I just got a 235 watch, and I was watching this video, the thing is I do not have a music control on my watch, should I install it or it should have been already installed in the watch? thank you in advance.
Can u turn off the smart notifications? i think its a bit ennoying. Because all my snap pop up on the screen, and facebook messangers. If it colud be turned off that would be perfect.
Thanks. It would have been nice to see the data fields i.e. how many data fields can be shown on how many screens, for me, that's one of the top priorities... I like the white text on black background, can the data fields be set to the same colours? i've only seem them on white backgrounds before...

I have the garmin 235 i dont have the IQ Apps showing or the "other" option. I do have run in-/outdoor and Bike in-/outdoor how do i get that "other" options
Excellent review..But is it possible that we have only 2 data screens available per activity? For me it is not enough, on my Polar M400 and V800 i had much more:(
Yes i know, 8 data fields are maximum, per app. 2 x 4. That is disapointing:( ON polar m400 I didnt have that limitation, sold already and bought Fenix 3, and it is funtastic watch. Much more options, 10 data screens per app,,
Great Review..thank you. My FR235 has the the phone with the ? like the one in the video...what does this mean? Makes me think phone not connected but I get notifications on my watch. Also, how do I use music control? When I arrow up there is no music control screen. Thanks!
+Finlay Sambrook Smith Thank you for the request. Anything specific you want to know? Demos of a few of the apps, general functionality? Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate it :)
+Hugo Lima Good point, it doesn't inspire confidence when it does that. The FR225 is better at not displaying the HR when watch is off the wrist but it does happen on both FR225 and FR235. I dont know why though. Any suggestions anyone?
+Tech Life I am guessing it could be a HR weighted average, if the watch lose the beat for any reason it keep with the average one till recovery the true beat... but I am not sure...
magicmartin i have a 225 and the ohr is never accurate. i have had it replaced and the issue was even worse with the other. juat called garmin and they stated they would send me a 235 to replace it bc of the issues i have been having. customer service is awesome
Question? Is it possible to keep heart rate screen on(or lock)? because I want to keep monitoring my heart rate. It keep changing back to watch screen. :( Thank you
+Varong Sooppipatt Hi, thank you for asking. Unfortunately it is not possible to lock the HR graph view on the watch. If you want to monitor your heart rate during the day you could start a workout, change the view to only show the fields you want(HR, Time etc) then it will display that information until you stop the workout or the battery dies. I hope this helps.
Is it possible to read HR thru BT in other mobile apps like Runtastic? I am using Runtastic for biking for a long time, so I want to continue in that however biking is not my only activity where I use HR monitor. Thanks for info. PS: This video seems to be most complex video about Garmin 235. Thank you a lot! :)
I have synchronized my FR235 with Strava and the heart rate data gets synced there though I am not able to see the HRin Starva in real time. For that real time HR, i look at the watch. Learning as I won it for only the last 3 weeks
Thanks very nice & detailed review, can you please do 225 vs 235 Heart rate measurement comparison during various activities.... I own a 225 and would like to upgrade to 235 or fenix3 and sure many others are looking to do same maybe for notification features....
Hi, I've got my watch for about a week now. The heart rate sensor stops illuminating at the certain point (when I'm wearing the watch), but the heart rate is still showing. When i toggle between random buttons the green light comes back up. Is that normal or is it something i should be worried about. Thank you.
+Dejan Nešić Thank you for asking. That is normal. It's part of the smart monitoring to save battery life. If you start moving more it illuminates again. If you stop moving it estimates your heart rate instead of measuring it. You can improve measurements by going into setting > system > data recording > then select every second (instead of smart). While you are in an activity it should shine 100% of the time. Hope this helps.
I need some help here. I have Lumia 635 (windows phone) and BlackBerry Z10 but I can't connect with the Forerunner 235 in those two devices. (Garmin Connect,Garmin IQ etc.) What I'm doing wrong? Maybe those two mobiles aren't compatible with Forerunner 235??
I was told by a rep at my local running store that none of the Garmin Forerunners can sync to my Polar HR monitor, so I was surprised TechLife said you can. Maybe I didn't understand what the rep was saying, but that's the reason I've waited to buy the Garmin watch until I could afford one of the newer ones that have an HR monitor on it. Sucks if the Forerunner HR monitor isn't very reliable.
Hey, how can I change my profile color and also activate the activity bar?, mine is just red and I do not know how to put that holy fucking bar in the left
Basically, you are looking for 'Profile Color' within 'Activity Settings'. Assuming you are at the home screen (time showing), and let's assign buttons 1,2,3,4,5 going clockwise from top left, as in the manual, the following key presses will take you there: 2 4 2 5 2 Then choose your colour. Note, this is correct as of now :)
There are two ways to do this. You can use the "other" profile and you can change that activity manually later on Garmin Connect OR you can install apps for that on the Garmin IQ store. I have apps for the gym and for hiking and they work very nice.

+David Cramblett Thanks for you comment. I completely agree with you.
+Tech Life Which type of chest strap do I need for mye forerunner 235, I have the Garmin soft strap Premium Heart rate Monitor, is that good enough?
+Ida Lillehammer I have a many years old Garmin ANT+ chest strap and it works fine with the FR235. So it seems most ANT+ HR monitors should be fine.
+David Cramblett Straps are becoming dinosaurs. If used correctly the 225 and 235 units record BPM as accurately as any strap. I think it is probably more operator error than in the watch.
How long battery will work when you use FR235 + gps on + while using chest strap and also by turning off optical wrist sensor?
I exactly needed this for my dad to monitor his heart!! Super glad I watched your video before buying
It is called the Garmin fore "runner" . It never claimed that the heart rate monitor work well with those things, like weight training. It is well known that no optical sensor works well for those activities.
So if you don't like the optical heart rate on this FR235, but you like everything else, the FR230 is the ideal, perfect watch?
About the heart rate sensor while lifting weights, do a set and check the HR during your rest. For us humans who ABHORD wearing a bra-like device, the 235's HR ability is actually quite nice.

Great review. The video and audio are nice and clear.Thinking the 225 now that you evaluated the sensors issue.
can we go through the button in details?
Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for....great detail!

You can use one of the stripe ends as a cushion when u place your watch on the table, it won't scratch

Thank you!
I'll take the garmin 235 better software for almost the same price.
Basically going to copy all of your settings haha awesome video! Thank you!
Is the watch at all uncomfortable with the HR monitor protruding out like that?
no.
no
No discomfort at all. I have been wearing this watch all day for the last 3 weeks and found no discomfort.
I don't even notice or feel it. The watch is super light and the band is super comfortable
Thanks for your insights. You did not mention the sleep analysis feature, could you please comment.
Nice review, Could you please let me know about battery life when disabling heart rate function and disabling Bluetooth
Nice reviews, now my watch is wrong date so how should i do? Thanks you for you answer.
Nice video.
I ordered the 230 as I've already a HR strap and am assuming it'll be more accurate.
Thanks. Good choice.
How do you do Cross Fit , Circuit Training and Weight Training using the Garmin 225 ????

Is germin forerunner 235 good watch
Should i buy it
I'm someone who sweats in gallons 😁 given that the device is water resistant wouldn't the optical HR monitor be affected by constant exposure
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't. The OHR sensor is completely sealed and flush with the back so I wouldn't worry at all. You can even swim with it.
I just got my forerunner 235 and for some reason the controls page is not on my watch. Is there something i have to activate to get it?
Thank you for all the information, I just got a 235 watch, and I was watching this video, the thing is I do not have a music control on my watch, should I install it or it should have been already installed in the watch? thank you in advance.

Fine! You did forget that you can change the number of data fields. Heart-rate measuring is better than the 225 in my opinion.
I do simple 15 minute ab workouts. I don't need exact precision, but will this count my calories and stuff?
Thanks. It would have been nice to see the data fields i.e. how many data fields can be shown on how many screens, for me, that's one of the top priorities...
I like the white text on black background, can the data fields be set to the same colours? i've only seem them on white backgrounds before...
Does the HR monitor work better if it is positioned on the inner wrist?...because i never wear my watches on the outer side..
Is the Coros Pace better? I see that an Amazon for $199 and this is $20 more.

does this watch do good with fast running heart rate? Just not good with lifting ect..?
the best review ever!
for me should o wait for the vivoactive HR or jump on the 235. I weight lift, Pilates, basketball, hike, and some running. what would you pick for me?

Why even out off your wrist it still marks the heartrate?
+Hugo Lima Good point, it doesn't inspire confidence when it does that. The FR225 is better at not displaying the HR when watch is off the wrist but it does happen on both FR225 and FR235. I dont know why though. Any suggestions anyone?

I have Lumia 635 (windows phone) and BlackBerry Z10 but I can't connect with the Forerunner 235 in those two devices.

What I'm doing wrong?
Maybe those two mobiles aren't compatible with Forerunner 235??

Hi there, can you set new activity profiles lie with the 630? ie cross fit or strength training?
does this watch has a simple stopwatch?
Which button is the Home screen?
Hey, how can I change my profile color and also activate the activity bar?, mine is just red and I do not know how to put that holy fucking bar in the left
Basically, you are looking for 'Profile Color' within 'Activity Settings'.

Then choose your colour.
Note, this is correct as of now :)
Hi. Is this watch good for hiking?
can you add activities like hiking and walking to the list. or can you only have run, cycling and swim?
There are two ways to do this. You can use the "other" profile and you can change that activity manually later on Garmin Connect OR you can install apps for that on the Garmin IQ store. I have apps for the gym and for hiking and they work very nice.
Is there music, or can music be put on through iq?
will this watch ever have music?
what are the options for weight training? does it track it nicely / have valuable info? oh and does it tell the time...? lol
Can you send texts after you view a text notification?
got it! thanks!
does this watch have vibration? I have trouble hearing beeps.
Yes, it vibrates
