This is definitely a job for a pole saw. Being a land scraper this kind of thing ticks me off. Why is he holding the saw with one hand?? I also have to mention if your stupid enough not to do this with a pole saw. He is cutting from the side not even using the spikes and cutting from top down. This is how you get killed.

47 yrs for me stating at Bartlett for 3 dollars an hour in 1977. When I was a younger climber there were no ladders on my truck. As I aged out with climbing ability I got a 40ft. aluminum ladder which I could load on truck and set against the tree by myself (I always tied in ) Then as I further aged the ladders got smaller. Now I prune ornamentals off an orchard ladder at 65yrs old. Funny thing is I make money pruning small trees than I used to make removing big ones. Did a lot of bucket work but never owned one. Tried crane climbing a few times

Standing on the second to last step of a 20ft ladder, I did an identical cut. The branch shot back into my chest and pushed me off. I landed on both my feet shattering my right heel and split my left heel into two. I didn't feel the pain until I tried to stand up and fell right back down. I had fairly new, steel toe leather boots on so you know they were tight. I had to pull both boots off because I couldn't handle the pressure building up. That pain was horrendous and I could see my fractures trying to brake through my skin as half my heel was in the same spot my Achilles tendon used to be. It took me almost an hour to pull myself 73ft to my vehicle using only my elbows and another hour to drive home where my woman then drove me to the hospital.
That was August 3rd 2020. I have 4 screws in my right heel and wore a cast on my left foot 1 1/2 months. I've re-broke my right heel twice and will have problems as I age.
    Don't be stupid.

Like always the limb hit tip first, the but kicked back and threw the ladder away. The guy fell 40 feet . But it wasn't over...he beat the stem to the ground and the stem fell into the middle of his chest. He became a paraplegic. Probably wished he was dead. I could tell stories for hours as often they come out when they hear our saws.

He also has a very light grip on the handle part way through cutting the limb. Because he is cutting a limb that is pinching the bar, he is at full throttle and the bar is longer than the branch. A stub on the far side that he did not see could contact the tip of the bar, and now the saw is flying back at him headed for his neck and right arm faster than he can react.
      Nothing happened this time....
I go to ISA conferences; an instructor at one showed us a helmet with a cut in the top. I really experienced climber, he was using a mid sized saw to chunk down a hollow trunk and the tip touched a hard knot on the far side; saw kicked back right on top of his noggin and cut into the helmet.
So, no helmet, kickback, get a nice permanent part in your skull. This guy is posting the video with a link? He really needs to get some training and PPE and use it. Also a contractor license, bond, and insurance.
If a potential insurer found this clip he would likely have trouble getting any coverage. In most states, if the job is over $500, you need a contractor license or you can be fined. Asking for cash means you are probably cheating on taxes as well.
Savvy land owners don't hire the cheap bid without credentials, because the "contractor" might sue the landowner if injured, and the quality of work is unknown.
Consulting arborists like myself might appraise badly pruned trees and find thousands in damage.
In this case it looks like a willow already in poor shape. Raises another issue: if he is doing this for a customer, and he doesn't prune the whole tree and says that now it is "safer", and another cracked limb falls off and damages property or hurts someone, guess who is getting sued? His business is done before it even gets off the ground.
He can get a Certified Arborist credential from ISA (International Society of Arboriculture). With a license and credential, he can charge more as well.
Yes, most people start out with just a chainsaw and a truck, but you need to rapidly progress beyond that f you want to be a professional with all your body parts.

Folks at home, never ever ever try this. You have not idea exactly how that branch is going to move. You have to take the weight off first, cutting from the end and working back. Do not assume the branch will falk straight down. If it was hanging in the air and your cut from under first then over, it might fall but even thats risky on a willow tree, it could crack and splinter before falling. This guy was scheduled for a serious injury on this that was miraculously avoided.

I have a favorite saw for this, an MS261; would have cut through it like butter in 3-4 seconds, pinched or not, but I would have rigged the limb first and been in my climbing gear tied in above the work. Took him over 20 seconds. May not seem like much, but if all your cuts take 5x longer than a pro, you are not a pro.

Fair point mate, a lot of us have been there, but take more care. People die doing this. A few pointers to bear in mind: 1, don't use a saw from a ladder. 2, wear a helmet. Its nothing to do with falling objects, the saw may kick back and hit you in the head. 3, pay for some instruction on saw maintenance and use, it'll pay you back over the years and likely save you a lot of grief.

Squinting helps give your eyes maximum protection. Cap backwards means the peak wouldn't be ruined if the saw comes directly back at your face. Step ladder saves so much time and track bottoms mean you can head straight to the gym after work, if you've still got both arms. 😮

First off if possible get rope saddle and a lowering line and get above the cut. When the energy changes from potential to kinetic you can always predict what the hell is going to happen,. Tree work is risky business. It's funny how many people think they can work with trees. When the logs start hit the ground you better know what its all about. Be safe out their people. Trees can say so much and never utter a word.

You can use a ladder safely if you tie in, know how wood reacts, know which way its going to fall and tie and lower the limb if necessary. I have 47yrs in the biz starting in 1977 for 3 dollars an hour. I've been injured and almost killed a few times. To all you young and able guys i hope you stay safe and are still cutting wnen your my age (65)

@@yglandscape7703 I'm not downing your video or you. I have done this same exact thing. Just remember, try to start at the end of the branch and start trimming it back before you cut it off. When it has a lot of stress on it then it is very probable to kick back on you. I have had it happen, however I was very fortunate as to not be hurt or killed, but most of the time someone gets their brains knocked out.

      Right
Removing storm damage lodged in a tree is tricky and requires skill and the right gear or the odds will be stacked against you. In this case, he didn't get hurt, but the heavy limb probably broke branches that should have been retained to help fill in the gap in the canopy.
I would have shortened it up from the ground with a pole saw or power stick, rigged a life line (rope) in the tree above the work and done the branch removal with the typical climber's gear (belt, wire core lanyard, hand saw, chainsaw, as well as a helmet, ear and eye protection, heavy boots and chaps).
Brand new, that's around $1,500 in gear for what's attached to the climber not including the chainsaw. And the chainsaw needs to be attached to the climber as well; you drop it, there goes cash to fix or replace it, never mind maybe dropping it on someone or something on the ground.
And I would have suggested pruning the whole tree, or at least inspecting it by climbing and observing it up close. All he did was remove a broken limb, damage the tree some more, and left it in an unknow state regarding safety.
Also best to work with another person, in which case the limb could have been rigged and lowered to the ground without squashing and breaking other stuff. A selling point of your work is not to heavily impact everything near the tree. He should think about selling the quality of his work, and not just land the cheap jobs if he wants to compete.
