@joke no need to go at their house we can already predict it tho. Otherwise, you're not Asian so you wouldn't know how our parents literally have 2 difference face.... supportive only when infront of many people, but when not.... uuhh u know lah
THANK YOU! Some of the most successful people on the planet do not have college degrees, let alone high school diplomas. Granted, some careers require college such as the medical field.
Do you expect universities to handpick students? Anyways chances are the universities know a lot are going to fail so they will make the minimum mark lower
Yes! This is societal pressure. People think once removed from this environment, even if parents give no pressure in a new society, it goes away. But it doesn't. I immigrated a long time ago. This unspoken pressure is still present. It's been difficult to adapt to living without this pressure... I see my cousins raise their second generation immigrant children. They really don't have this pressure and live completely carefree. 🤦 I don't know if this self added pressure is a +/- thing. 😅
Plus if you tried your hardest and put all you could, that's all that really matters right? You did your best, but it's just not one if your strong points and that's okay. I dont mean to be condescending, as I'm not too great at keeping up with schoolwork at all 😅
That's the whole point of school you study not for knowledge but for that piece of paper. I prefer self education because it helps me to improve that's why I love the library and the internet more than school itself.
Or you can also asia as whole. Our parents and the society put too much stress on us to do our best. I'm now living canada but the stress of going to school is still there
The parents from 2:30 made me tear up a little. Everyone needs supportive and loving parents during these challenging times. Hope everyone will hold their head up high regardless of their grades. Remember: some geniuses didn't do well at school so don't let this test define you.
i totally agree with you, im from the UK and when A-level (grades that determine whether you get accepted into your university) results came out , my parents were too busy and i can understand that but i died a little seeing my friends and their supportive parents. The fact that i got A*AAA didnt matter to me anymore. I think more parents should be supportive than imposing their standards on their children because we are human and we do have feelings.
My mom was so dissapointed everytime I get low grades, believe it or not Asian parents care more about grades and how you present yourself to society than their child's mental health.
Imagine getting back the marks for a test you've prepared for for over 2 years, knowing that it literally decides your future, and getting a low grade. If that situation happened to me I'd jump off a bridge right away. No wonder why these types of tests are harmful for student's mental health
you can give the test again but thats like dropping a year? And that year becomes the most depressing ones because everyone you know your age is already in the colleges they wanted and you are just stuck
One more thing is that the results will literally decide their fate therefore they will likely to be stressed about it while reviewing and wont perform well

As a teacher in the US, this breaks my heart. Students you are more than a test score! You are a human being and you are so important to the world. Your life has meaning and is valid. It hurts me to know that countries outside of the states put so much emphasis on what you score determines the path you take in life. I took the SAT and bombed everything, but the essay. I ended up attending a junior college (2 year institution) then transferring to my University to complete my BA. I graduated with a BA in History and a Social Studies composite teaching certification with honors in 2019 and just landed a teaching position in December. I love my school, I love my job. I love my kids. My parents did not force me to choose a career. While people told me I would never be happy because I would not make enough money, my parents and my friends encouraged me to pursue a career that would make me happy. You should enjoy your secondary education and enjoy your college experience. And do not be afraid to change your path if you come to discover the career you thought you wanted it not what you truly want to do. And if your parents, family, teachers, or professors never told you this, then let me say it. “You should be proud of the hard work you are putting in or have put in to reach you goal. Be proud of the mistakes, hardships and trials you have faced or are facing, because those will make you grow. You are doing this for you, your happiness, your future, no one else’s”. -Ms. Lotre A high school World Geography and Economics teacher from Texas, USA.
The kids who hate it are probably are in the class of lazy, undisciplined, rebellious or video game addicts. For the hard working kids, it is the best social mobility system in any society.

School shouldn’t be this stressful. Finland has a much, much less strict attitude towards testing, etc and yet they consistently show that they have the best schooling on Earth.
I agree that they should mitigate the stress level, unfortunately Finland and China can’t be comparisons when it comes to education due to massive population differences
I mean these high school parents should know their own kids ability by now so if they actually know that their kid is failing school then they wouldn’t have high expectations. Not saying that this is true for everyone.
I’ve personally learned how to not let my grades demolish my mental health and my emotions. it’s not the end, there is so much more life outside of education
The thing is education decides most of your future and exams and tests will remain a key component of your education and it decides which university you go to Going to a higher level university means more resources, better facilities, more competitiveness, better teachers and most importantly more career opportunities especially to work in higher-level businesses and or institutes It'll make life a whole lot better But yeah preparing for exams is stressful We have an 8th grade entrance exam and most top high-school’s will only accept admission for top students and remember it's high school admission not university Prep for most students begins in around end of 6th grade or beginning of 7th grade and it's stressful af cause firstly it's a hard paper, secondly the grading and marking is very strict, the timing given is also not that much so you have to be fast, there's also a lot of stress and it's extremely competitive putting a lot of stress especially for top students
@@Kakashi-ck9tp what you’ve said makes sense and I partially agree. It’s also important to understand that there are other streams and means that can support your life as well outside of higher education. one time a foreign exchange student came to our class and finished a math test that had an hour to complete in 5 MINUTES. the teacher asked him, “how did you finish already?” and he said “too easy”
Saw the title and immediately felt really anxious and stressed. I can't even imagine how stressed they are, I feel very lucky that here we aren't put under that much stress. Exams in Asia are no joke... I wish the very best for those who didn't do as well as they wished, also for those who did well. I got my DSE results last year, and I broke down in tears as soon my eyes laid upon the results. I’d been revising for months and months before the exam and I still got horrible results. It’s affected me so much in the past year and both my physical and mental health have deteriorated immensely. The education system is honestly terrible, although effective. If you’re a parent, don’t raise your child in Hong Kong unless you want to give them lifelong trauma.
I got poor grades in high school including failing maths and I still got into a top 100 ranked University. If I was in Hong Kong I'd probably have to be a janitor or something, it's crazy how competitive asian countries are
Similar story as yours. My brother failed in the HK exam but my mom gave him a tiny amount of money to go study in a community college in the US. He rode a bike to school and worked at Denny's to support himself. To make the story short, he founded a company that became a Fortune 500 company.
@Anna Lee, On the contrary, you get ahead because of education, without relying on one source of information. In east asia: "Yeah I didn't make the cut for this top university, time to work as a janitor as at best I'll be mediocre" In the west: "Yeah I didn't make the cut for this top university, let's create a business around what I wanted to study, and learn as I operate it".

This is literally happening all over Asia not only in China, Japan and Korea. When I took my college entrance exam and did not meet my parents expectation I cried because I felt my hardwork is not enough and my parents were disappointed at me.
You worked hard and that is what counts ❤️ Trust me. If you work hard. You will make it one way or another but if you give up. Then you shall never make it. This is late, but you can do it and life is much more than just tests and exams. You will realise it. Your parents should have been happy for you because you worked hard. It's rare to find people who are hardworking and especially when they are not planning to give up. You can do it. What helps me is planning a goal. A goal you really want to accomplish. So when you think: 'I can't do this anymore' or 'I will never make it'. Think about that goal you really want to accomplish. I hope this helped you!

Not really. They’re parents will be disappointed and worried for their futures, because they don’t want a hard life for their children. These marks influence not only the parents happiness but the kid is intrinsically motivated to do well too.
As an Asian i know how it feels our exams marks is everything for us . We not only have exam stress but loads of comparing with either our elder siblings or relative's children if we get less than them we are literally considered as black spot of family We are judged by our exam results not by how productive we are in our daily lives
This reminds me every day of that kid I once knew in my graduating high school class that committed suicide because he got a low score on the SAT & ACT...mind you his parents had super high expectations and controlled every aspect of his life from who he talked too and really honestly they cared more about the name of the college he would get into rather than his health. They wanted to brag that their child made it into this prestigious ivy league school. I remember the kid being like a blank paper, people knew his situation and became friends with him & talked. Elizabeth Spain AP exams are super low stakes though. They don’t really affect your future. They could be nerve wracking, yes, but the AP text at its worst is a score you can ignore and its best is something you can boast about and perhaps get college credit before. The worst isn’t even that bad
I know! That’s why I can’t even imagine taking one of these tests that is very important for my future. Because I can’t lie to myself and say, if I fail, it won’t harm me in any way.
@Karen luvs Jesus Sometimes I'm jealous of western society. Teens over there have so much carreer choices and picking a non-STEM course doesn't seem to be frowned upon in the west. I’m a South Korean student in America. I was born and raised in America but with more traditional values and respects of Korea and Eastern Asia. Even in American schools, where I’m expected by my family, my classmates, my teachers, and the current society we live in to outperform the norm- it becomes very overwhelming. At many points I convinced myself to have abnormally high expectations for myself, and there were also many times where all I could think about was my inferiority, and how much I would want to die (passively). I’m going into only my junior year of high school. But with a new outlook. Covid-19 is running rampant, school is even stranger than it was, and I still hate everything about the education institution. Just so far, if there’s anything I’ve learned over the past 6 years, is that students before my age should live their lives and middle and high schoolers doing the things they love. Don’t waste your time worrying about trivial things like I did. Your educational experience in school is only a fraction of a fraction of what the years to come will bring.
America taught the world this, but they accepted everything else, except for what matters. The students know that they dont have a life. Myself included, I go to classes that go from 6 am to 11.30 pm, mostly with just a hour for lunch. All this for a piece of paper,
The schooling system is unnatural, it was created to train young people to do what they're told and prepare them to work in factories. We should be learning through mentorships and apprenticeships, learning the trades of our father/mother/family or training with a mentor/scholar in small groups of 10 or less. The modern schooling system is focused more on scores than on actual learning.

Going to a higher level university means more resources, better facilities, more competitiveness, better teachers and most importantly more career opportunities especially to work in higher-level businesses and or institutes
It'll make life a whole lot better
But yeah preparing for exams is stressful
We have an 8th grade entrance exam and most top high-school’s will only accept admission for top students and remember it's high school admission not university

This is literally happening all over Asia not only in China, Japan and Korea. When I took my college entrance exam and did not meet my parents expectation I cried because I felt my hardwork is not enough and my parents were disappointed at me.
You worked hard and that is what counts ❤️
Trust me.
