  • I was sitting here flipping through drum videos of Colaiuta and rediscovered this clip of a very "active" piano solo from David Garfield (of Karizma) where they are playing a very up-tempo take of "Nothing Personal"... as I began to pick up the guitar I got the idea to show you a behind the scenes look at how I take inspiration from other players directly and then modify their concepts in order to develop my own ideas etc.
    here's a version of me playing the tune solo

      @@mattdelany6799 Wow. Does he really actually charge all those famous people he's interviewed? Or just the up-n-comers? I don't really like Rick's videos and how he's straining so hard to get more fame but he does have a lot of knowledge about music and music theory. I wouldn't call him talentless. But I am sick of seeing his name thrown around as if he's some god of music.

      @@TruthSurge people pay for exposure. The fact that he won’t even acknowledge Tory shows he either has no talent, because he doesn’t recognize it in Tory, or he just interviews famous people, or Tory won’t play his game. Tory is the best guitar player in the world by 100 miles. Beato, and the whole Nashville scene sucks, and they are mediocre gear salesmen posers. If he is so talented, why doesn’t he amaze us with just him and a guitar, like Tory does?

    • @TruthSurge
      @TruthSurge หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@mattdelany6799 I feel ya. His son has PERFECT PITCH, though! He discovered that tons of views on YT vids = a good bit of $ so he started to upload buttloads of music theory vids and then once his "look at me" vids dried up (his knowledge of music) he started to analyze bands/songs and when that dried up he started interviewing famous people. I don't think he's all that, myself but yes, I don't think he'd interview Tory for one simple reason: she isn't famous enough to draw tons of views like Steve Vai and so on. I've been playing guitar since the 70s and can play circles around Rick. I'm a pretty good player for rock tunes but I could not care less about being interviewed by him (or really anyone else). I enjoy my freedom and space quite a lot. Fame eats freedom for breakfast. If Tory is happy making music and learning and doing her own thing, that's great. I am sick of seeing "Rick Beato" in the comment section of every video she uploads. These are just my opinions.

      I'm not sure, in all honesty I think maybe overhand striking the strings gives you more leverage than trying to basically grip them hard with your left hands maybe? There is sort of a technique to it, I've tried to explain this, a lot of people just don't really handle or strike the string the right way, and then it kind of compounds when you start adding a bunch of extra notes and chords... I guess it all started back when I was trying to take ideas from famous pianists in their writings memoirs etc. I happened upon this book written by August something, anyway she was a piano student of Franz Liszt ... So there were some kind of mechanical finger hand things in there that kind of stuck in my mind, I've tried to apply some of that kind of thinking...

      I probably have what you could call "guitarist perfect pitch", meaning, I can figure something out very quickly and know what part of the neck to do it in... As far as like naming a note out of the blue or something, no....
      The fingerboard is a matrices grid. It has its rules both vertically and horizontally, as you know... I guess it's how things overlap between the high and low registers and the high and low strings is where things get a little bit complicated. I guess nowadays I kind of look at it like "zones for certain specific reasons"... For instance if I was doing two handed stuff and I really wanted a very clear separation of material, I might be using chords on the high strings down near the nut, and tapping melodic stuff with the right hand on the lower strings the way up high, due to the disparity between the two sounds etc also the Sonic equalization of the fact that chords down there and on the high strings have a somewhat tinnier quality versus in different registers where it changes, likewise, the higher notes on the thicker strings gives you a fuller rounder warmer sound... And of course in doing all of this you can essentially have both hands in the same general octave if you want... or not...

    I don't know why but your tone and playing reminds me of being a kid, in a really good way. I don't even know where I would have heard this stuff because my parents weren't really into jazz. Love your playing.

    • @TorySlusher
      @TorySlusher  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have tried to develop a very singular tone that is both fairly conventional but also deceptively complex... And it really comes from studying the acoustical physics and equalization properties of other instruments.

    • @mattgoldsworthy3278
      @mattgoldsworthy3278 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TorySlusher Very cool! I should put a lot more effort into dialing in a good tone. I just pack on a bunch of distortion, mids way up (I really like Coltrane's tone especially on interstellar space) with a bit of delay, sometimes reverb... But I don't really put much effort in. About as much thought and effort as this reply haha! But I really don't have a sweet clue about how to really get a good tone. I also can't play jazz. I'm still really learning all my keys and only recently developed my ear enough to hear the chord changes though the solo itself. Anyhoo my point is, you really inspire me to be better! I also dabbled years ago with 8 finger tapping, which I really love, but I'm also a classical guitarist so I find my nails are awful for tapping. I think I noticed you have longish nails for picking, so I don't know how you developed your tapping so well with any kind of nail at all... Maybe I'm wrong though because I've been wrong about a great many things haha! You're playing is truly mind blowing when I think about it. You're more like a pianist! I want to do what you do. I will eventually, but art has kind of taken over my mind as of late.

      It's probably that whole tone/lydian sound. It's used heavily in old school cartoons. Looney Tunes etc.

    • @mattgoldsworthy3278
      @mattgoldsworthy3278 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MeTriviSlipKlokDriva I appreciate your input, but I don't think so. I think it's because of live performances I would see on TV with like Myles Davis and stuff. I use the whole tone tonality quite a lot in my own playing. I think it's the bebop elements of Tori's playing plus the tone itself is a major factor, but definitely the bebop stuff. I really didn't watch many cartoons as a kid, or TV for that matter... I know I stated that I would see performances on TV, but that would only be while mom and dad had TV on while cooking supper or something. But I feel like in the early 90's every music or book store had bebop playing constantly, at least where I grew up.

    Hi Tory. Watched your videos for the first time not long ago. Found you when I was looking for a review of a Fesley guitar (which I promptly purchased and am enjoying.) Watched a lot more of your content since then, and wanted to thank you for blowing my mind! Completely dismantled the boxes and frameworks I'd created for my playing and my understanding of musicality. In my mind it was like analyzing a spreadsheet in a cubicle with charts and crap all over the walls. Now playing feels like I'm making the decisions and have control over what I want to sound like. Profundity and gratitude are difficult to convey in a comments section, so just a big thanks from some guy far away.

      Well, yeah, there's plenty of instruments that are definitely playable and usable these days, I just basically look for one that's got this extra mojo. The green telecaster I have definitely has it, for example... Beyond that, yes, you kind of have to look for more expensive instruments...

      Yeah, I tend to think of it as textual ideas at the end of the day. A lot of people approach it from the perspective of: here's this chord progression, here's this lick etc. I tend to just think here is this modular textural thing... And then you can just change the harmony associated with it...

      I pretty much only listened to a lot of jazz pianists over the last 10 years... I got really tired of the guitar scene. It was and is kind of just people, I don't know, I don't want to be insulting... Just doing the Olympics of guitar, it's just not very interesting to me on a musical level... Now, if I was apt to see the guitar like it was a video game controller, that might be a different story. There's no problem or nothing wrong with looking at it anyway you want of course, it just stopped being appealing to me, I guess... Every time I would hear like typical rock riffs and then a solo line come in on top of it.... Ugghhh ... I guess it's like similar to what most guitar players hear when they listen to AI...
