Jay is 74yrs old but the wear and tear of his life is taking its toll. He sounds much older, god bless him. Hope we continue to have him for many more years!
it's often embarrassing when the car company sends a marketing guy who knows all the sales taglines but doesn't have a clue about the technicals and Jay has to subtly school him!
@@08_crown_vic As the video title specifically states "Dodge Charger Police Pursuit Vehicle", Police Pursuit Vehicle = PPV. Always has to be that one expert out there, regardless of the topic.
I hate seeing Jay declining so fast in the last 2 years. It’s been seeming pretty rapidly. For 74 years old, and his money, I know he’s had a pretty easy comfortable lifestyle. He can wave a finger and ask it to be done anything he needs. I still watch and enjoy Jay Leno. Keep the videos coming.
A local small town near me had a severe flood losing 2 new Charger Pursuits. They asked Dodge for 2 replacement v6 cars but dodge was on back order for base V6. When Police told Dodge what happened they immediately sent the town 2 fully equipped new Hemi cars for FREE simply stating "We wanted to help". Respect.
I sincerely hope Chrysler can survive the coming years. I'd love to see an all aluminum Hemi in the new charger body with a RWD configuration. The EPA is losing its grip over the auto industry, so they will no longer be able to fine Chrysler for selling V8s. Trump will make sure of that.
@@PyroBlonde7777 Completely agree. He touched on it stating the cost of cars has gotten completely out of control and excessive regulations are severely hurting the auto industry costing jobs. He's spot on.
This video is about the car. Jay is having fun talking shop. Let's enjoy that and leave his health to him. Most of us won't be half as energetic as jay at (74) he's an automotive rock star.
Jay had 2 horrific accidents recently which took a toll on him. He was caught on fire by a faulty Steam Engine Car and being thrown off his motorcycle by a wire stretched across a parking lot. Older folks don’t bounce back as fast as younger guys.
Younger buyers can afford the gas engine Dodge cars anymore because they’re so damn expensive now, how are they gonna afford $70,000 electric vehicle!😂
i know, the people in the comment section are miserable and depressing. can't just enjoy the video. remimnds me when people look at 100 year old photos and they say "wow all the people in this photo are dead" it's so stupid
I think this is the first video we actually see how old the great Jay Leno is. Love the guy and all he has done. Wish i had the opportunity to see his collection and him in person.
Jay, thank you for being such an incredible and lasting face of late-night TV. Your humor and warmth brought joy to countless homes, and your ability to keep things wholesome and steer clear of divisive politics was truly admirable. You kept a smile on everyone's face for years, and we are all so grateful for how you conducted yourself. Wishing you and your wife strength, love, and peace as you navigate this challenging time. Thank you for the years of laughter and for being such a remarkable presence in our lives.
"It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas."
Just want to say thank you Jay, you're content and overall attitude towards life and the automotive passion has shaped the minds and hearts of viewers for decades. Appreciate you my man! One car guy to another, wishing you many safe miles ahead
I like that he seems to be a car guy. I don’t know anything about him, but I just hate it when CEOs are merely implants from the business world (like Boeing’s CEO, who knows nothing about engineering, and instead comes from accounting and finance).
I hope Tim joins another car company or create his own car company and businesses where he can do whatever he want build cars how he want to tbh, the ball is in his court now
Jay Leno is a national treasure. Seeing him getting older is somewhat bittersweet. I am from the same generation. Have enjoyed his shows for many years and look forward to more.
@AlexJonesWasRight1776it is called the charge pursuit. Like ford is interceptor utility and formerly interceptor sedan. Chevy is police pursuit vehicle. It’s the trim/model of the vehicle.
I worked on police cars in my shop all the time. I had multiple contracts between state and local municipalities. I saw how police cars were built to a higher standard mechanically Then I started buying police cars from those minimality as my daily driver . I truly enjoyed every one of them, including a rare Dodge magnum police car package. If I heard right in the video, Jay has the last charger police car! If true, it could have no better Stewart to keep the car in perpetuity for all to see later generations ! Thank you, Jay Leno’s Garage!
I just bought a 2017 Explorer PIU. I really like it. It’s quick and handles great. The column shift reminds me of the cars I drove in the 60’s and 70’s. Does need some suspension work.
I Like this guy Tim. Seems like a real chill guy who knows how to enjoy himself VS a uptight "work work work" only kinda CEO. He has a passion for the car/chassis but mostly lets the cars history speak for itself instead of trying to sell it to the camera. Gives off the energy of someone you'd enjoy working under because he listens and takes feedback
@@MetalTeamster fill me in! I saw something about how the current guy made the company do a 180 whereas before the company was booming and employees happy and actually had a voice. It was a while ago I saw this but seemed like this guy cares more about numbers instead of quality??

Always loved Jay Leno since his earliest guest shot on the Tonight Show with Johnny. These videos are always entertaining and informative. I sincerely hope that Jay always finds something that puts a smile on his face. We’re about the same age, I think that’s why we appreciate similar things. I wish Jay all the best with his personal life difficulties. It saddens me when I hear of anyone having to deal with a loved one who is suffering and perhaps even a little more compassion for Jay, simply because he has brought so much joy and happiness to his legions of fans everywhere…
Wow, you can hear and see Jay’s age getting to him. I was just watching an earlier Jay Lenos garage episode on the Demon. It’s sad to see Jay, Jeremy and other automotive icons get older. It’s been a pleasure watching Jay, keep it going 🫡
Great CEO? Dodge is on the verge of disappearing. They have what, two models? The Durango, which is old and outdated, and the Hornet which has been a huge sales flop. The entire Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, and Jeep group is not doing great. Quality is low and have huge inventory not selling. I give him credit for doing some cool muscle car stuff but he’s not been great.
@@atmartens Much of it is the government emissions regulations. EPA says that a company's emissions must decrease every year. That's why we see the phase outs of V8s

I recently sold my 2009 Ford Crown Victoria P71 that I used as my daily driver, really liked that car and I knew I was going to miss it. And seeing this last call Charger Pursuit, now I REALLY miss it! Good on you for picking this one up Jay!
My 2009 Ford Crown Victoria police interceptor is sitting in my driveway. She's a retired Indiana state police car. Supervisor car cause it actually has black carpet. She's got 210,000 miles and still running strong. Spotlight still works. Everything works. And got lucky with factory cd player. Usually just am/fm radio. I have no interest in ever getting rid of it.

Years ago here in the UK Ford used to spec their Police vehicles with even uprated door hinges and stronger seats, because of the exceptional use that the cars were subjected to. It's not just brakes, suspension, transmission, etc. that are upgraded.
You guys better love and appreciate this man while he's here. We love you Jay. You've been an inspiration to a lot of us. U are the first person who I think about when somebody says A Real Car Guy. 💜💜
In Australia sadly Muscle Cars as Police cars stopped years ago when we stopped making cars in Australia. Police now use a variety of manufacturers including the BMW 5 Series, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento. The main thing the Police need is a 5 star safety rating because they are always crashing.
@@daschmidtz Not at all, we have a Kia Sportage 2018 era and it's one of the best cars we have ever had. Mind you it's Diesel and that option would not be available in the US thanks to VW dieselgate
I'm a big fan of inline-6 engines and they've become exceedingly rare in today's cars. Never been a MOPAR guy, but a straight-6 muscle car making 500+ hp just *might* turn me into one!
I have a 2020 Charger with their 6 cylinder. Puts out 292 horsepower which you can't consider it to be muscle car power but still, it goes 0 - 60 in 6.5 seconds which is faster than a lot of the old 440's from the 60's and 70's but the bonus us that it gets better gas mileage than the two 4 cylinder cars I also have. Those are rated at 32 mpg on the highway, both get around 27-28. My Charger is rated at 30 mpg and gets 31-33 and that's even climbing through the Blue Ridge Mountains. So I'll be keeping an eye out for the 2025 Chargers with the Twin-Turbo Inline-Six.
A straight 6 with or without a turbo, is a FANTASTIC engine design. Whether it's a Jaguar, TVR, 2JZ, Barra, BMW or Dodge it's a truly great format 👍 The 8 spd gearbox makes a huge difference to the acceleration AND fuel economy. A 550hp factory turbo straight 6 is a BEAST 😮 It's such a shame that all the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep products built in the Magna Steyr factory for worldwide export are all so incredibly unreliable 😕
@@Digital2pulse - That was pretty good for back then, but their plus was that the 300 horsepower was moving a lighter car. I did drive a 1994 Chevy Impala with the LT1 engine and that only put out 260 horsepower and despite its weight, it would move and had a top speed of 140 mph.
Jay, Tim Kuniskis definitely had a fun time talking to you through this video. I really do appreciate you showcasing yourself as a dodge brother. You deserve that last call with that hemi v8. Enjoy it! *tha thunk*
I was looking for this comment. Haven't watched his videos is a couple of months and I cant believe how skinny Jay is. I thought he had crossed that inevitable and natural line of being really old with the muscle loss, weaker voice, loss of weight and his demeanor really. Hes speaking more softly. I didn't know hes dealing with his wife's health problems.
A week ago I watched Jay Leno’s next most recent video and he looked much healthier. I’m a little worried about him. You never think about the good guys getting old. I’ve met Jay Leno a few times. The very first time that I met him in person was at Bob’s Big Boy in Toluca Lake on a Friday night for the weekly car night. He rode a steam powered firetruck into Bob’s and you could see the steam coming out of the flute 50+ feet in the air. He has always been a staple of the local car shows for the average Joe. Always willing to stop and talk to everybody and a fun character.
I understand the spirit and thought of your comment was to assure others that Jay is "doing ok" despite looking and sounding a bit "old" in this video, but I really wish it weren't needed here. Jay is 74 years old, has had two health set backs since the pandemic, and his wife is dealing with dementia related issues. He is as human as the rest of us,he is going to look older every year, he is going to have slow downs and less... enthusiastic moments when he is under stress. Jay still tours, in comedy clubs as well as on the corporate and paid lecture circuit - he is going to continue to show some less energetic times. But look at other entertainers like ; Steve Martin, Mel Brooks, Carroll Burnett, even the recently departed Bob Newhart (r. i. p.) - they are all still vital enough to do what they want to (most of the time, when given time and opportunity). Age is but a number... But it can't hurt to remind Jay Leno how much we appreciate his work and look forward to seeing what he wants to show us next!
Those Chargers/Challengers are no joke! I rented a Challenger a few years ago while one of my Grand Prix's was in the shop. I only kept it a few days and didn't really beat on it (much). A few years ago I was on the highway at 70+ and passing a line of slower cars in the right lane. Looked up in my mirror and all I could see was pushbar about 4' behind me! Got over and the GSP (Georgia State Patrol) in one took off like he was shot out of a cannon! Interestingly, one of my local PD had a few 1999 Grand Prix GTPs similar to mine. Supercharged 3.8L Buick V6. Theirs were 4-door and loaded down with equipment. They used them for highway pursuit. They had an "open house" and car show one day and I pulled in with mine. Cops came over and we talked. I asked them if they had clipped the speed limiter and they grinned. The factory speed limiter is set at 135 to keep from exceeding the stock tires limit (mine, and theirs, are upgraded). I've seen vids of them with the limiter "removed" go 155! They destroyed theirs and I still have mine!

For several years, Alabama had corvettes, mustangs, escalades, etc. police vehicles. On the back glass was a sticker that said along the lines of, "Paid for by drug dealers".
The D.A.R.E. Program here in Central NY had an 80's Chevy Camaro when I was in middle school that was seized in a drug raid for use in their demonstrations at schools in the area they went to.
One of my favorite stories was about a Navy friend of my brother driving west on I 70 in Sunbeam Tiger that he modified the 289 to 302 Boss heads and seeing headlights in his rear view mirror creeping. More pedal, the closer the headlights behind him came. The undulating hills hid the headlights for times…but they kept closing the distance with every speed change. Then he saw the headlights behind him just yards and two twin rotating red lights suddenly activate. It was a Dodge Polaris 440 police interceptor.

This is a sad day 😢. When I was a LEO we drove the most horrible early 80's Ford LTD Crown Vics. They would overheat, they didn't handle well, the quality was...questionable and the interiors were very uncomfortable for officers wearing duty belts. It was embarrassing to drive those cars but the department only bought new models when they were forced to. Police today have no idea how good they have it for vehicles. These Chargers are so sweet compared to even recent past police cars, I'm truly sad to see these go. Today I can't even afford a car and I wouldn't accept one of those LTD Crown Vics if it were free lol. I keep saying it but it's so sad the Charger and Challenger are being killed. My dream car became the Challenger when I saw them first released and every year they seemed to get better and better. I can't dream big enough for a Hellcat or Demon but a wide body Scat Pack 392 in Plum Crazy Purple...oh yeah. Panther Pink would be my first choice but they don't even offer that anymore. 😢
some of us do. 24+ years on. My first car was 1990 Vic 5.0. Grandmas LTD with red velvet bench seat. odometer frozen at 255k. radio wedged between the seat cushions. radar bungee corded to the dash. Big loud overhead lights that you had to sometimes get out and do the 'ol "rotator bang" with your hand to get them unstuck. No luxuries at all. I was given a flashlight, gun, badge and clipboard and told to go enforce the law. Had a few 93, 95 vics. 150k miles was a good car in the fleet. I had an 05, 08 vics. All vics overheated on traffic accidents. Had 2014 charger, a 2020 and now a 2022 Ford Explorer. Current car is a Cadillac compared to my first patrol cars. The last 10 years as a LEO has been vastly different than the first 14.... lol. Yeah.. the rookies have no idea how easy they have it on cars, however... being a LEO today isnt really that fun anymore and I feel for these guys. Im only 5 years away from hanging it up with a 30 pension.... when I first started, I may have had crap vehicles but we could actually be police. Today, we are glorified security guards. No pursuit policies, anything more than handcuffs is a use of force investigation, and every arrest requires 2+ hours at the hospital for a fit slip to take them to county jail if they so much as have a scrape or a cough. "Paper Law Enforcement." That basically all we do these days is push paper. There is no actual catching of criminals anymore.

“But we do make sure we don’t have any high speed cut offs for any of the chases.” I hope he means just the last year. Because the 2006-2009 were limited to 131mph, which is pathetic. My car with the same engine and such pulls incredibly hard right up to 130 and then just stops pulling past 131. It’s a strange feeling. The power is certainly there, but it is computer limited. Later on they raised the limit to 151 for select agencies. I have used a tuner to raise the limit on my car, and then it sailed right past 131 but I let off at 140 because of other risks, like not the best tires, and other conditions, like traffic, road surface, etc. I will say that when I upgraded my suspension and included the huge 32mm front sway bar, high speed performance handling went through the roof. It was fine and dandy at 120mph before. Now, it feels like the whole thing was made to go 125 all day long. The number one attribute of these cars, as far as performance goes, is what the police departments call “closing speed”. Which is the time it takes to catch up with speeding drivers. Of note is that the Ford Explorer PPV with twin turbo eco boost has a better 0-60 time AND higher top end speed. But from 65-too speed, it’s a dog, and takes much longer to reach 130 than the Chargers do. I can understand why they would limit civilian cars, but why do that to PPVs?
Adam-12 increased LAPD recruitment by double digits. Everyone wanted to be Officers Malloy & Reed. My town ran Chargers for a few years in the 2010's after the Crown Vics and Impalas phased out, but then they realized they never get into chases and had more of a need for utility and went almost entirely to the Explorer around 2017. A few months ago they decided to go with Durangos to keep the SUV but regain the V8, they ordered so many of them that they had to park a lot of them at the fire stations around town because the police stations lot wasn't big enough.
Awesome! I bought a 1969 Illinois Plymouth Fury Police Interceptor, copper color, in 1971. I tore out the front bench seat, re-carpeted it, and installed bucket seats from a Challenger. Finally, I upgraded the radio and speakers. It had a 383, with a high rise manifold, Holly carb, dual exhaust, a high stall transmission, and limited slip differential. It was built like a tank, with lots of non-standard parts. Whenever I replaced parts I would always halve to take the part off the car to compare it at the parts store to make sure it was the same. When I replaced the U joints, the Plymouth’s bearings were tiny compared to the ones I took off. I ended up taking home U joints from a heavy duty pickup truck. My favorite car of the past 53 years.

Definitely true on the inability to stop muscle cars. I had a '65 GTO - crazy how a car with that much power came with 4-wheel drum brakes, no power assist. There have been numerous times when I've thought "uh oh, we aren't going to stop in time"... But the power behind that car - 389 with 4-speed muncie... amazing.
This is an oft repeated point but it's not really the case. It uses some old S class front end and E class rear end components. And switch gear like the window switches etc. However, it was a platform that was developed in house at Chrysler before/during the merger. You can read about the details on it's development at allpar if you're interested.
There are some parts of the MB platform beyond suspensions. The hard points as I heard engineers call it when Ibworked for a manufacturer for dozens of years, are retained. Using the blueprints and retaining hard points is a hundreds of millions of dollars savings in development and simulated supercomputer analysis and mockup crash tests.
Hearing about the US requirements for a police car absolutely boggles my mind. Here in the UK, the vast majority of our police cars are 130hp Peugeot 308 SW's with a 1.6 diesel engine. The contrast is unreal and I envy the US for getting all these cool cars at an affordable price to the average consumer, when the same cars imported over to my country would nearly cost as much as a house in most parts of the country.
Our police cars are better than the US, look at what traffic police drive compared to the Ford explorer or even these chargers. Volvo, BMW, Audis etc. the US doesn’t have local policing like we do either so they aren’t going to need basic patrol vehciles. The forces get very attractive pricing on vehciles and the government could have supplied the entire nation with BMW’s for less but it was decided not to as it might be perceived as wasteful spending.
@@Horizon301. "The U.S. doesn't have local policing like we do" yeah, we don't live in towns that people are stacked on top of each other like items in a warehouse. But we still have foot patrols, bike patrols, and vehicle patrols from the local PDs, sheriffs, state, and the occasional fed. What you said makes no sense. Also I've seen your patrol cars, and frankly they are something I wouldn't patrol in outside maybe the U.K.s old Defenders or the BMW estate wagons.
@@joeblow5214 my point is that they aren’t covering the same kinds of areas. We have concentrated towns and cities so you can have smaller vehicles that you wouldn’t want to be used in actual pursuits, local policing will not encompass high performance vehicles, they can be 1.5 litre manual cars for example. That’s why we have traffic police made up of BMWs, Audis and Volvos etc which are better than what the US has, I would take an A6 Avant anyday over a charger.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Code #1 was speed/get there fast. Code #2 was get there fast with flashing lights. Code #3 was get there fast with flashing lights and siren/full tilt boogie (-;
It varies from place to place. The SoCal agency I was with never used Code 1. Code 2 was get there quickly. It was the deputy's discretion whether to use lights and siren but normally we only used them to clear congested intersections. Code 3 was a full-on lights and siren response.
This probably varies all around the county, but the only thing different that I'm accustomed to is Code 1 means drive normally to a non-emergency (as a general rule). I've heard that some agencies prohibit code 2 (logic being that if it's important enough for lights, then you should be using the siren, too). That being said, I believe it's common that cops can typically exceed the speed limit without lights or siren under certain circumstances. I believe this gets some people upset because they think the cop is simply speeding for no reason. For example, it's pretty common to run code 3 to a family fight but cut the siren (and sometimes the lights) as you get close to the location.
I have a 2019 Taurus SHO, 365hp. I love it. “It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we’ve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.
I had a few of the old Highway Patrol cars. The first was a ‘69 Dodge Polara, which was a “real’ interceptor car. It was fitted with the 440 Magnum HP2 engine, meaning that it shared the same bottom end as the 440 6-Pack muscle cars. It was black and white, with spot lights, rubber floor mats, vinyl seats, a big reading lamp, and a standard item all police cars come with, a rear window defogger. It still had a shotgun rack in the trunk. The car was a blast to drive, even with a Sure Grip rear end, it would leave rubber all the way up the street. It was faster than the mid-80’s 5.0 Mustangs I used to play with. The next car was an ‘80 Dodge St Regis, which was an interesting car. The big-blocks had disappeared by that time, but my St Regis (a former Washington State Patrol car) was equipped with the E58 “high performance” 360 V8 engine. Unfortunately, “high performance” in 1980 wasn’t very high. I improved the performance by adding 340 2.02 heads, an LD-340 intake manifold, a new Erson cam (I had a few chats with Sig Erson back in the day), 340 exhaust manifolds from a Dodge Dart (the car needed to pass smog), better cats from newer Dodge V6 mini vans, and Flowmaster mufflers. Under the hood the car looked box stock, though the “Lean Burn” system was disabled, and a standard electronic ignition system hidden in the original housings. This was the funnest car I had, unfortunately, it suffered a gas leak and burned to the ground right in front of the Anaheim police department. The last one I had was an ‘87 5.0 Mustang CHP car. It had a 5 speed, manual windows, and no stereo system. It was a fun car, and one which I had always wanted to have. I did some light mods to it (mass air conversion), but otherwise it was fine the way it was.

It’s like when our parents get old that mixed feeling of joy and sadness creeps in everytime you see them. May God bless him good health

21:47 wild when you remember that the platform is the old Mercedes E class W210 platform. Hell of a run.
W211. But I think it's not 1:1. They copied some elements from the chassis architecture.

That’s why we have traffic police made up of BMWs, Audis and Volvos etc which are better than what the US has, I would take an A6 Avant anyday over a charger.
because you dont live in a police state

Correct me if I'm wrong. Code #1 was speed/get there fast. Code #2 was get there fast with flashing lights. Code #3 was get there fast with flashing lights and siren/full tilt boogie (-;

Well...at least until the car falls apart in a couple of years.
