"Don't play sousaphone on a windy day" Director: this band rehearsal might be a little windy(alot) but it will be fine * The whole sousaphone section fall's on concrete * Me: Well don't go yelling at us it's your fault man
I can totally relate to #4. Before the Den (student cheer section) got their own section of bleachers for football games, they were neck and neck with the band. Very difficult to see the BD conducting pieces, but was fun to blast 7 Nation Army into my ex’s ears🤣. One game, after our halftime show, I went to eat dinner at the concession stand (we always get 3rd quarter off). Came back to play my sousa like nothing happened. About 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter, I smelled something off-putting like rotten meat. I take it off and to my dismay, someone from the den decided to shove a hotdog down my bell. It reeked so I took it out and tossed it into the crowd of students. Short story long, that’s why they moved over a section
When Harvey Phillips was in high school he used to ride his bicycle with a sousaphone on his shoulder so he could take the horn home to practice. Practice paid off for Harvey Phillips, the Paganini of the tuba.
At my school they used to do number 5 for some sort of event after band camp was done, but they stopped it because i think it was doing the marching band show in the gym and people passed out, so I never got to do number 5, but one of the tubas who I know was one person who passed out, or just fell.
2 things you should do with a sousaphone, 1: Return it to its case indefinitely 2. Get a contra/marching tuba instead because it’s the better type of tuba to march with and it will also prepare you for DCI. Friendly banter aside, I enjoyed your video and I also have respect for sousaphone players because it is probably more taxing on your back and spine over time and I can imagine that it’s probably more cumbersome to march around in.
I play tuba. I’ve only played sousaphone once...my shoulder was dying...also, I’ve played baritone once...that was a pain...that’s why I’m applying for drum major this year!
Yep, just hoping my new band director will be good. I don’t know him because I’m only in 8th grade. Our old band director led us to being the best band in our school’s history since 2008, which was when we won the SCSBOA Championship. Anyway, this is a great video. -Sports Legend8
elijonestv Update time! I was going to do a parade on December 6 with my middle school, and I was gonna play Sousaphone for the first time in 2 years, but on the day of the parade, right as we were going to load our decorated instruments (it was a Christmas parade) my band director cancelled the parade. I was so sad because we had put a few weeks to a month into practicing for the parade when we could’ve been practicing concert pieces. It was raining tho, so I can’t blame her for canceling it. The pieces for the concert are on my channel if you want to check them out.
elijonestv Update Time #2! I’ve got a video of my winter concert on my channel if you’d like to watch it. I was so excited for festival, but the “thing” ruined it all. Sad times.....and the high school band placed last at championships..... Edit: Here’s the link! th-cam.com/video/BRRp8i7hw1g/w-d-xo.html Edit 2: oh you watched it?
Its very difficult at first, but if you wear it enough, your shoulder will not hurt from it. Also, make sure to rest it on your other shoulder when you arent playing
Last time some one held my valve down I got my practice horn out and gave him a trumpet high-five (you don’t need to know what that is) and he had a bruise for about 2 weeks and also I didn’t have to get a new horn it was ok(if you couldn’t tell this was a joke I would never do anything go hurt any instrument)

Bro we had like really strong winds one day and knocked over 1 tuba almost knocked another 2 and me and the other tuba held our ground
thats why i took off the bell on my sousaphone on a windy day
I love how sarcastic you sound while telling us how to not hold a sousaphone
Someone threw a soggy bagel in my sousaphone bell.
Bro I’m sorry for your cleaning
3:56 i just ended this mans whole career
4:14 That was me at Band Camp Yesterday 🤣
Ruben Gallardo what’s band camp
Moo Cow it’s a camp where you practice and learn instruments
Also applies for marching baritone
@@rodrigroudon1872 Does it really? I think it applies for trombone but the wind makes it harder for you to move your slide.
10.a don't quit, because it's really fun.
10.b don't quit because there is one sousa and one bari sax in a band of 120
My tuba friends and I here at IU can agree to every bit of this. Watched it, and nearly died. The accuracy is just perfect
I love music band. I played 3 different instruments and I play in several music groups.

I chatted with him once. Good man.
i'm not a tuba player but i understand
I mean, I play Sousa and I can confirm that all players in my section have indeed done all of these *including me* and honesty he not wrong 😶
Being the stupid tuba player I am I can relate to all of these.

Eli: runs into doorway
Me: Absolutely pissed my pants
number 10 needs to be told to every single marching band kid, you won’t believe how many people we’ve had quit in 3 years
I'm doing band camp this and next week. It's 8 to 4 and holy shit Sousa is tough for this show
Lucky, we had 8 to 8s for 3 weeks straight

I need to know how to wear a Sousaphone COMFORTABLY
Its very difficult at first, but if you wear it enough, your shoulder will not hurt from it. Also, make sure to rest it on your other shoulder when you arent playing
elijonestv 👍 Thank you, now I found hope to survive Band Camp.
... I would wear a sousaphone with a light sash and some black loafers. Posture is of great importance. Now you better work!
When your a 5’3 tubist so you don’t have to bend or turn the bell when you walk through the doorway 💅

Never played a brass instrument but my band teacher is letting me try sousaphone this year and I have trouble with high notes any tips brass players?
Point the air downward in your mouthpiece, dont clench your teeth, and use warm air
