      Shaun M You need your video card to operate at 60hz. If your video card only supports 4K 30hz that is why you experience lag which is unusable.

    • @thebreathalyzer

      The filter bite is what makes the original patch. Agreed. Kind of weird they would have a "Jump" patch that far off, but it's not like you couldn't figure out the filter settings and get there with a bit of tweaking. The new preset doesn't sound like the Jump patch at all.

  • @bright1180
    @bright1180 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Jef, slightly off topic, but can I ask what software you use to capture your DAW’s audio for your videos? I’ve seen some people use something called soundflower but I’ve never tried it. Thanks!

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I have used Soundflower, but the only way for me to get audio that is latency free is if I record into my Zoom H6 recorder. Everything else introduces a little bit of latency and makes it impossible for me to play anything in my videos. I also found sound flower would cause the audio to drift and I'd have to keep re-syncing it throughout the video.

  • @djGreenALERT
    @djGreenALERT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    See now THIS is how you demo an instrument/VST! Thanks Jef. I just watched the video again and maybe you could clear up a question I have. Up until now, I assumed The Prodigy (Liam) used portamento to obtain the famous sound on the track 'Charly says' - official video version.Having watched you play around with modulation though, I'm assuming now THAT is how he did it? Maybe he used both?

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! Yeah, I’d say that’s modulation for sure. Just like in my video near the end, set the modulation to be 1/2 bar long, turn the loop off, and set the osc freq to slide down a P4th. I had to make 1 new point at the first 25% of the modulation, then one at the middle, then put one point in between those at -.4 level and play with the curve of the slope... I got something close, but to me it sounds like it might be a sample that gets slower as it gets lower... fun to try to recreate though!!

    • @djGreenALERT
      @djGreenALERT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jefgibbons Awesome bit of info Jef. Much appreciated. I found out he used a Roland w-30 which is sample based. That fits in with your sample theory. You have given me the incentive to have a go at recreating it too .. Again.. thanks Jef. I look forward to enjoying more of your videos.

    I actually owned the original OBX before MIDI. Once MIDI hit, I couldn't find a viable MIDI chip to make it competitive with things like DX-7 (owned one of those ,too) so I had to let it go. Sad. It was clunky and unreliable, but sounded beautiful. I still have the rack-mount version of the follow-up, Matrix 6r. Haven't turned it on in twenty years. Should probably let it go, too. It was stupid expensive to be a keyboardist in the early eighties. Over the years, I spent tens of thousands on rigs. Now I have all that and more on a single computer which, a couple of DAWs, a few VTS's, all tolled, maybe 2K.

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jefgibbons Before synths, I went thru a couple of pianos (electric/acoustic/hybrid) and B3's (with actual Leslies). Then came Mr. Moog and the world was never the same. None of it cheap. The OBXa was $5100. My first personal loan. Then the DX7 was $2000. Did I mention the Vako Orchestron? Never went for anything modular though I did once enjoy putzing around on a ARP 2600. Anyway, I try not to get hung up on the outrageous expenditures of my past for sanity's sake. As to locale, here's a single-word hint that should pinpoint it - Graceland - nowhere near Vancouver. If you're truly interested in something from my remaining inventory (not much at all) feel free to PM me, however that is done.

    Arturia does the most generic synth in VST land. They are in no way any better sounding as free avaible stuff. They sound so boring and stiff and this here is no exception. Good looking GUI and features but in the core mediocrity.
    I got their Minibrute and even in the hardware... The filter does sound unmusical when you sweep it down.
    In your examples, drowning everything into reverb doesn't make things any better. Very very disappointed. I banned the complete Arturia effects suite from the PC long time ago, as in this department I hear the same weaknesses. I don't know what those guys actually do and I'm speechless how people rave about their products.
