  • Michelangelo Falvetti (1642-1692)
    Nabucco
Oratorio on a libretto by Vicenze Gattini
In his 'Cappella Meditarranea', exotic percussion, oriental flutes, gambas and lutes together make up a unique world of sound. Seventeenth-century Sicily and the mythical Babylon merge into one. In Falvetti's oratorio, King Nebuchadnezzar falls into the trap of pride and idolatry. In his thirst for power he is troubled by fear and unease. Three young administrators are killed horrifically while the silent majority just looks on. In this work with its delightful melodies and moments of striking beauty, ensemble passages alternate rapidly with solos, recitatives and dialogues. Alarcón's inventive instrumentation and the rhythmic precision of the vocal ensemble and the musicians make this 'Nabucco' a special event.

    Bass Alejandro Meerapfel, Matteo Bellotto

OK MR. Hoffman! This Ester I visited Ambronay Abbey with its school o music. And I am not a musician but only a lover! But I have understood french love for baroque music... And I was born near poor little Falvetti's town, Melicuccà, in Calabria.... Two Sicilias were a paradise for music since 1700. Then in 1799 revolution aborted in Napoli. And now we have problem in our country.... W Falvetti, Vinci, Jommelli, Porpora....and Vivaldi! Domenico Polimeni, Brescia, Italy.

What an incredibly great composer this Falvetti was. And very few people know his music. G. Alarcon and his band has brought this miracle into life. Let God bless them all for this wonderful deed. Oh, how I wish they could find some more Falvetti miracles. I simply can't fulfill my mind with this oratorio.

First heard this on a BBC Radio 3 broadcast. Loved it so much I listened again and again and then purchased the only CD I could find online. I'm intrigued to think about how much of this reflected Falvetti's original writing? Whatever, it's fabulous and will remain one of my big thrills of 2017

Sr. Alarcon has brought to the modern world the wonders of the antique Italian gift of brilliant music beyond any imagination. It is like finding a new world inside of heaven with angels singing between the lights of ectasy.

It is very strange, but I can hear the influence in Jean P. Rameau´s operas of this Italian music!
