I remember one of these cars back at home in the late 80s. It was a 1600 cc 4-cylinder engine with a carburetor. Easy to do maintenance on, reliable, and simple enough for most of the general public to do it safely with minimum investments. I live in the USA for almost two decades now and would purchase one here if the imports from Russia were allowed. To my understanding, this vehicle is way cheaper than anything of the similar class available here at this time.
Just reminder for everyone- Remember-for who and for what this car is designed and produced-off road ....farming.....long distances trips with different surfaces... ..typical Russia.....still best car to travel between cities in dificult road condition - Hard to say -who can be interested in western Europe......but-still in many countries -can be a best transport option
I was so sad when Lada retired from France. But the typical customers here were farmers, lumberjack, hunters, fisherman, etc. Best off-road car ! Can't believe you can buy a brend new one in Russia for 7k€ !
my father had 3 of those. The first 1987 was the best. The last one 2005 was full of electronics errors. Still the best off road cars on a budget. Best for hunting and countryside living! Greetings from Greece
Prices of older niva's aren't going down anymore here in Finland, they have actually started to rise because they have not been imported for so long time. Roads in Finland are most of the time better than our eastern neighbours, but road conditions are just as bad during winter and most roads outside the main ones are unpaved. Simple and cheap 4x4 is not something that is made anymore by any manufacturer but lada, maybe suzuki jimny but even those are quite expensive because of heavy taxitation for new cars here, thus the rising popularity of these simpler cars. Parts are still imported for them so fixing them isn't that much more expensive than any other car.
From 1977 till today, this car has not been changed at all. Except some minor changes in the body, the Lada Niva is the same for over 40 years! I like it.
the reason is cause they don't have to, they are lazy and coming back to the first one, its reputation is insane, off-road capabilities are unbeaten, especially for its price
I drove one for a while. Absolute beast off road. Basically could go anywhere most 4x4 would not even consider. Really poor comfort for long journeys on good freeways though. But then its not supposed to be a luxury cruiser.
@@IAT1964 I bought 1 a year ago since I live in a countryside actually not even "side" let's say in the middle of nowhere - no address even, fantastic in it's simplicity whatever something goes wrong I change the whole part everything is so cheap in it, not even worth the service time to try to repair it, drop it out and buy a new one - so it's like new forever. Really guys the mechanic hourly wage is more then the parts itself, u can go anywhere through the field etc, you just dont care she does not care, and the bumpiness offroad such a fun you will fly out from the seat sometimes, absolute beast. Downside is in the city - very annoying somehow u forever changing gears every stoplight is a horror, its not made for that, so I dont understand the "Urban" version.
Sir thanks for presenting the Lada 4x4/Niva through the years. See in France these cars have been forbiden, the car registration document is taxed by more than the price of the car so no imports can be done it's too unworthy. The french Lada dealership had to close it's gate by 2013 and definitly seased business by 2015 after sold all remaining models in stock. Renault/Nissan made all sort of things to make sure Lada gets killed in France to favor Dacia. So this is why we will never know about these incredible brand new models, and it's a shame because they got all what it needs to seduce frenches who prefer modern standards. When I show people what Lada looks like now they get mad they just want one. Instead in my garage I fix up and refurbish old Nivas, mainly from 1999-2001 single ports to 2002-2012 multiport ones and selling these to our folks so they have quite a garantee of good functioning plus we relook them to be a bit more sassy but we will never have the sexy result of the last models from Russia unfortunatly. We can just make them last stand the longer we could for the best hope of all Lada enthusiasts Who do not want to see all of these cars end up in a scrapyard.

In Australia, Jeeps have a bad name here. It's only in the last few years theses SUV are get better. Range rover price is a joke. Toyota's seem to be a popular seller here. And the few US pick up that make it here are about $150.000 (Aus dollar). Wish we had lada niva's!

With the electric windows and mirrors as well as the air conditioning and some sound panels, the niva is actually quite decent now. But they should do something with the engine power.1.7 in atmospheric can make much more than 85 hp. They can take the 1.6 16v 110 hp of Renault it will be more powerful and light and will consume less.
Simple answer: it was the cheapest place to put it. This car was designed way before any deformation zones were thought of, inserting the airbag in the steering wheel would lead to lot of calculations and testing the deformation zones in order to set the timing of the airbag so it would not cause more harm then good. Most likely they would need to add some steel reinforcement in the front.

Are the brake drums and brake calipers still made from aluminium? I remember the utter hell of trying to remove steel pins from the calipers. The drums would also seize to the steel hub. I broke the calipers and drums when doing brakes on my dad's old Riva.
I would love a review of a horse cart. It is so simple - wooden base with 4 wheels and 2 horses pulling it. Nothing breaks, so simple and reliable. Why don't they sell those here. Big car manufacturers killed the horse carriage and people just want simplicity and reliability. Back in 1893 we had those and some of them still work and you could fix them real easy. All you knuckle heads here impressed by this abomination called a car - give me a break :D

If you're wondering where Megaretr sells his cars is in Naberezhnye Chelny, republic of Tatarstan. The current price of the Lada Niva/4x4 in Russia is between $7,100 - $8,130. The European Lada dealerships are offering them for twice the price compared to Russia, so Germany, Belgium and probably Poland those Ladas could be bought.

The Lada 4x4 is the car america needs right now. They just don’t want to let it in cause the domestic and Japanese manufacturing folks will loose their rear ends cause the cheapo lada can do everything their 40k plus truck can but it does it for way less money
Safety and emissions regulations are the real reasons why you won't see a modern Lada in the States any time soon. They fail on both fronts. That said, if you really want one, you can import an example that's at least 25 years old regardless.

You remove the engine and transmission and crate them up separately in a shipping container. Once in country you reinstall the running gear and your good. 1976 model came without AC,that is the only diff.🤣,I just love that car.

The only good thing in Russia is the beautiful women and the food. They can keep the Lada’s. I spent 2 weeks in Russia.
No offence but I think Tolstoi, Dostoievski, Chaikovsky and Repin ar some good russian "things".... And, probably, Sikorsky, who built the first american helicopters, is another ....
You're also forgetting their wristwatch industry. Second only to the Swiss at one point.
