Gorilla Family Not Impressed With The Cabbages and Gets Thrown Against The Wall

The gorilla troop at Twycross Zoo had a sackload of cabbages. Not exactly their favourite food as we know. So it gets ignored, tossed and rolled before it gets eaten.
Gorilla Shufai and Biddy are waiting and looking through the window as the food gets scattered outside. Did you know that the silver lady Biddy is having her 50th birthday in December? When the doors open, Biddy and Silverback Oumbie are the first ones out. The purple cabbage laying in front of him, but it just gets ignored. The bark of a stick is obviously better tasting. On the other side, Ozala and Shufai are out now and they do the same. Ignoring the cabbage and going straight for the sticks. Gorilla Lope comes bombing out of the door, and charges around the hut and runs/slides down the slope. It's just like him, he knows how to make an entrance. Shufai now on the other side smells the cabbage and throws it so hard that it hits the wall. Full marks Shufai! He finds another one and that one goes up in the air. When he's up on the hut, he turns away from the cabbage.
Lope his big brother just walks upright over to the cabbage to get a stick.
In the end, they give in to the cabbage. Shufai walking upright has a bit of cabbage hanging out of his mouth, but then he throws it towards his older brother Lope. A close-up of Lope's foot, zooming out to reveal that he's giving in as well, eating his cabbage. Gorilla Asante makes an appearance and grabs a cabbage straight away and takes it to the top of the climbing frame. She seems to like the cabbage. Shufai joins Asante and watches her eat her cabbage. He spreads his legs and I was half expecting him to annoy his aunt, but he just climbed down. He rolls another cabbage through the grass and takes it inside.

They eventually came around. Guess there was a limited menu today.
I think they're just disappointed that it's not fruit, or one of the sweeter vegetables like carrots or yams. The zoo probably strictly rations fruit because the high sugar content is very bad for their teeth; they're not fruit-eaters in the wild like chimps are, even though they love it.
Lol, everyone has their likes/dislikes, but I've never seen an entire troop hate something!😅
The D'jeeco troop all hate bitter gourd. They hold it looking sad and looking around for the real food. 😂

It was great to see the whole family out and about!! But can't they give the poor babies something else besides cabbage! I have seen other zoos giving their gorillas all kinds of yummy fruits and better tasting vegetables. And yes what is wrong with occasional bananas. I saw a couple enjoying some so much the other day. Aww the look of contentment was so sweet. Our sweet family deserves yummier food and yes I have heard some zoos think bananas are high in sugar but come on occasionally it sure would not hurt and so many bananas get wasted every year as well as other veggies and fruit gorillas would love. I want to see our family really enjoy their food. But on bright side sweet beautiful Aunt Asante seemed content at least. And Shufai didn't try to annoy her. Lol! Unfortunately, our western fruit is too sweet for the great apes and rarely feed them. They feed vegetables in zoos instead and then it depends on what they are getting from the supermarket as well. Which is donated and delivered to the zoo. They do get their sticks (bark, which they love for the sodium), leaves and even flowers freshly cut from the surrounding trees and other bits and bobs during the day

Their teeth would rot out of their heads if they were given fruit regularly. Most gorilla keepers reserve fruit only for training, or really special occasions like birthdays, and even then they don't give them too much of it, because a high-fruit diet isn't natural for gorillas. Also if they gave them fruit every day it would have no value as a training reward for them, and they won't do anything their humans want them to do unless there's a reward in it for them.

Red cabbage is an acquired taste. I love it but the gorillas probably don’t like that sourness to it. Who knows but they certainly weren’t digging into them.

The cabbage may have vitamins inside of them 💊, considering the weather change and the gorillas nutritional diets call for higher supplements? 🤔Idk 🤷♂️ I am not the zoo’s full-time veterinarians that know them very well 💊. Although, I think it’s funny, looking at them throw the cabbage around 😂 but some still eat it 🤣

These guys eat leaves, grass, bark, and bamboo regularly as it's a completely natural diet to them; hard to believe they hate cabbage that much. But they're smart creatures with excellent memories so are probably always hoping their humans will put out some of their favourite treats, the sweet tasty fruit that's usually only for training rewards or very special occasions like birthdays, because too much of it is bad for their teeth and makes them too fat. So they're a bit disappointed that it's just boring old cabbage, and have to show their disappointment and disapproval to their humans before finally settling on eating it. Almost like they're saying, "Is this the best you cheapskates can do?"😆

Winston and his troop at San Diego Safari Park now prefer Gatorade to regular water. Even their frozen treats are made of it.
@@johnhoney5089 Isn't Gatorade full of sugar?And if it's artificially sweetened that can't be good for them either; most artificial sweeteners have cancer-causing properties and/or cause digestive upsets. I can't tolerate any kind of artificial sweeteners myself.
@@KathyPrendergast-cu5ci I've heard something about that. The San Diego zoos need to stop giving that stuff to their gorillas, especially Winston who just recovered from both Covid and heart disease, on top of being an elderly gorilla (52 years old this year).
