Loved this. Nothing is more delicious than an idiosyncratic video nearly five minutes long about something you thought was a simple half second's worth. I watched it twice. God knows how I WILL pronounce it next time I try...
This is exactly what I was told by a Dutch friend of mine, so this was nice confirmation. I appreciate the fact that you made a video on this. Especially since other TH-cam videos suggest the horrid “Broigal” pronounciation.
I'm heeeeeere from 2020! Just had a beer and started thinking about my love of Bruegel -- as one is wont to do. "Wait!" I say, "Am I even saying this right?" Cue this video to give me all the information I've ever wanted, and more! This is a fab video, I love the tux and champers, the bookcase, the passion, the pronunciation. I will enjoy my locked down New Years much as Bruegel/Breughel/Brueghel anticipated :D
Am going to an exhibition here in Vienna (Pieter Bruegel: Once in a Lifetime) next week so was checking to see what the Internet has to say about his name :) I asked my Dutch friends how they pronounce the name but there are so many people out there who still have their own versions of what his last name should sound like. Your explanation is kinda for dummies but I found it funny and do not understand all these negative comments.
I stumbled on this video because I am doing a lesson on Brueghel for my kids' elementary school and wanted to know how to pronounce his name correctly. And now I've watched it 6 times. This is exactly the kind of geeking out I love and appreciate so much! Thank you!!
Thank you for your genuine interest in our old masters and thank you for your effort to pronounce his name correctly. However, Bruegel WAS NOT Dutch. He lived in Brussel (pronounce it correctly without an “s” at the end) and in Antwerpen. Although under Spanish rule (80 year war and Inquisition), the inhabitants of these regions were Brabanders and they spoke (and still speak) Flemish, which makes Bruegel a Brabander for sure, and a Fleming per definition. But no way…. Dutch. If you want to know or understand more of these historial facts, I’ll be happy to provide you with more information.
I admit I should have made the Dutch/Flemish distinction, which, as you point out, is politically important. In pronunciation, of course, Flemish and Dutch are two versions of the same language, so the pronunciation tip still works.
I was wondering do we know what dialect he spoke? Some in Brabants speak the Meierij dialect, which is not Flemish, but Netherlands. I also was wondering what his religion was? Catholic or Calvinist? As the Meierij was Catholic.
Lay off the sauce, and cut to the point. 4:44 seconds of blather. Just give the proper pronunciation and be done with it, you sound pretentious otherwise.
@@isabelleraskin4911 Bedoel je 'The World of Bruegel in Black and White'? Ik was eigenlijk een beetje teleurgesteld... Er was maar bitter weinig werk van Pieter Bruegel zelf te zien. Wel veel over zijn tijdgenoten of mensen die hem naschilderden... Ze hebben wel hun best gedaan om het voor kinderen aantrekkelijk te maken!
2:44 - 2:52 These 8 seconds contain all you were actually looking for when clicking on this video.
hahahahahaha
THANK YOU
Thank you!
@Romanes eunt domus I don't judge you either for wanting to waste your time, there is no need to swear though.

Whoa, Dutch people say "house" the same way (some) Scottish people do! In certain parts of Scotland. The place has a new accent for every 3 people.
Hi...What is the painting to the end of the video please?
It's "The King Drinks" by Pieter Brueghel the Younger
@@sesquiotic thanks!
I have a feeling the parties you attend are way different than the ones I frequent.
Brilliant - how doe you pronounce Gogh asin Vincent if G is Ha?
Thanks. This explains why Van Gogh in Dutch is Fuh Huh. (except what happened to the n?)
1:23 Old Indonesian is also pronouncing “oe” as “u” :D

Invested - and I like that!
Fabulous! :-)
Thank you, I will feel more confident going to the party! I see you've already dressed for the party.
That was hilariious! Now try saying the words, bugle, bagel, Breughel, imbroglio really fast three times. Good luck!

He changed his original name Breugel(german origin) to Bruegel in order to be more accepted by the flemish,as my art history teacher said
Thought this was perfectly charming. Made it well beyond indisputably NOT 'Breughel'
Legendary TH-cam

Just skip to 4:20
I've always used a pronunciation similar to the 4:20 one and I'm glad to know it's acceptable (and better than the horrid "broigal").
I didn't say anything that you said I would say.
Now learn us Belgians how to pronounce Abraham Lincoln because he was English 😂
Hiluerious.
But he's Flemish.... not Dutch.
No, he's not!! He's Dutch! My bad! lol
For number one, he WAS BELGIAN!!!!
Moreover, Bruegel was Flemish but that was then called the Low Netherlands ...
