Great video! I use the “one in, one out” rule, but from a financial perspective as opposed to quantity of pairs. If I want to buy something new, I need to sell the equivalent amount in shoes or clothing. This hobby is much less stressful when you stay cash flow neutral after building up a significant collection.
Biggest thing that has worked for me: Finding your Niche. Once you find what you are really into, you will stop buying a lot of “filler” sneakers that you are not into. Saving you a lot of money for sneakers that you actually like and will actually want to wear.
Something that’s worked for me is I’ll make a wishlist of what I feel that I actually want or would wear a lot. Whenever I have extra money I could use for sneakers or clothes I’ll go on the wishlist specifically and only buy from there. It’s helped prevent quite a bit of impulse purchases 😭
A big point for me is that I only buy retail or trade. I don't pay for resale whatsoever, saves a lot. I have 3 in the entirety of my 30+ shoe collection I have paid resale for but they were all at or below retail. Patients is key 🙏🏽
I usually go for maybe 2 - 4 hype sneakers per year, what really gets me though is all the sneaker sales! So many cheap kicks come my way and its hard to resist. Especially when some of those on sale kicks can suddenly become unavailable and shoot up in price
I apply this one rule to every sneaker purchase: one model = one colorway. For example, I wanted a pair of Jordan 4s in my collection, so I thought which colorway I would like to have the most. I was choosing between Breds and Pine Green SBs. Both pairs are great. Breds - og cw, timless classic, SBs - great cw, shape and materials. It all comes down to whether I actually want to wear them or I just like the way they look. Overall I've got the Pine Green SBs cause I prefer to wear lighter colored sneakers and green is my favourite color. At the moment I have 15 pair of shoes in my collection (sneakers + slides + boots), each pair is a different model. I think that this amount and variety of types of footwear that I own is enough for me to say that I have a complete, dream collection and I think the most important thing about being a sneakerhead is enjoying (and wearing!) the shoes you already have :)
Another strategy for that last note you made Josh: I personally compare similar shoes to eachother and decide if I can see myself wearing one over the other. For example, I like the new UNC toes that are about to drop- but would the time I pick it over my University Blue and Obsidians justify paying 180-260? Prob not. So pass.
I got lucky and got pretty much all the good ones for retail (sb 4, lost and found and pirate blacks) but yeah money does not grow on trees. Also sidenote I think the sb 4s are unbelievably underrated.
let me add on the pre-owned front. Goat has pre-owned and verifys them, if that matters to you. As does Ebay. Also, you dont need to only look at lightly used. If these are going to foot, some wear should not deter you. There are dozens and dozens of youtube channels dedicated to restoring and or deep cleaning sneakers, as well as customizing. I have amassed a collection of 70 pairs of SBs of the last 10 or so years of which only 10-15 were purchased new, saving me thousands of dollars. This will also intro you to the word of customizing which should be a part of any sneaker heads tool kit. Its fun and a great way to add value (personal value) to a collection. cheers

I've been into sneakers and fashion my whole life, but im graduating college and starting to make money for the first time and its been tempting to purchase everything ive wanter throughout my teenage years when i didnt have money. you've earned a sub!
Great video. Either for people who need the tips or just reminders. Budgeting starts hard often but gets better and second nature won’t practice and as you say, makes the purchase more satisfying. Saying goodbye is hard but I’m doing the same, brand not just for budget purposes.

So I don't really have specific advice other than to engage with the community and you could find something. I also used to only be on reddit. This year alone I got am1 chlorophyll, ow90 desert and black, sb skunks, black diamonds etc. Plenty of older and super hype pairs for absolute steals! We even raise money for charity with donated raffles. It's cool and kept me in love with the hobby ✌️

The only problem if you wait a month after release the price might go up for resale depending on the shoe itself. The key is to get it during release day or wait a week till stores get their shipments in. And you need a little bit of luck. Great video and great advice overall though. I’d forge relationships with smaller sneaker boutiques as opposed to hunting at the usual stores like Foot Locker, JD, Finish Line, or Champs. Although these days I saw lots of hot shoes sitting on shelves at these stores. I think also another great advice is to check your local Nike Outlets bc they truly have steals and deals and their new refurbished recycled lines are money savers.

Ive been meaning to downsize my collection. I'll be keeping the ones I reaaaally like. After taking a closer look, I more than half of what I have must go. Been following your rule of set a number and one in one out the past 2 years. But this year, I binged bought.
I have already reduced my collection to about 40 pairs (just jordans, air max 1 and very few dunk lows). I am not buying any adidas for exampel. Maybe this is also useful to choose the model you like and not collecting air force 1s, dunk highs, all sorts of jordans…because then you are running out of space 😅 this year i have just bought 2 pairs so far. 2023 for sure a weaker year for must cops…at least in my opinion. e. g. If you own AJ1 university blues, jordan 4 unc and maybe AJ5 unc you dont need unc toes..
If a shoe gives me that "wow" factor, I'll cop it, but it's important to weigh our your wants and needs. I find myself always wearing the same 2-3 shoes from my collection so making sure they're a wearable style you like matters big time cuz we not tryna waste money out here !
