ahhh welcome to the world of hounds. It's not you - they are hardwired to follow their nose. You're not going to train that out of him. And 20 miles a day is NOTHING for these dogs. I'm sure he went more than that with all of his wandering. You have such a good heart to take such good care of this dog and not just leave him. But he is complicating your hiking life in a big way and I'm not sure you'll be happy with him when he is not a trail dog. Hounds can be very challenging in day to day life. You are proving to have a lot of instinct and natural affinity for dogs - kind of surprising considering you've said in the past that you don't particularly like dogs! They do have a knack for crawling into our hearts. Soldier on Stella - I am greatly enjoying watching your journey
You ain’t nothing but hound dog cryin all the time you ain’t nothing but a hound dog cryin all the time you never caught a rabbit an you ain’t no friend of mine
I agree with Linda. This situation seems to be complicating your hike. It’s nice that you have tired to take care of him. Everything will work out for the best.
What Linda said! You're being very patient and loving. He's so sweet. But yeah, his instincts to follow his nose probably are 't compatible with a thru-hike. :( I'm glad that you got to spend a little time with him, though. 💗
Hi Stella. This year you have become not only my favorite thru hiker of the year, but probably the thru hiker I've most enjoyed following and I've been at this for six years now. If I were in your shoes, I would immediately stop feeding him meals. Put his daily food in a sack or bag, hang it off your pack belt. During your hike down the trail, as soon as he starts moving farther away than you'd prefer, call him to you and offer him a kibble or two. The process of calling him close and rewarding him with his food should drive him towards relying on you for food and motivating him to stay close and listen. By measuring it out to the one bag for the day, you can avoid overfeeding him. If it works, once he starts responding on command, try offering the food every other time. Eventually, he'll always just come and you can go back to feeding and using treats as rewards to keep reinforcing.
He was definitely used as a hunting dog which probably explains why he got lost in the first place he is going to roam and be put in dangerous situations if you don’t put a harness and leash on him at all times and get one of those back packing jackets for him and let him carry his food. If your really wanting him as a pet at some point your going to need a family or friend to take care of him while you finish your hike or it’s going to get complicated… he is a handsome boy!
You felt a nice connection to the pup and took good care of him. You are realizing the reality of dogs. I guess you're learning people need dog training more than the dog does. The training for a dog and an owner to be good at off leash walking takes a good amount of training. A lesson learned. Keep trekking. 😀
I use a 10' biothane leash for hiking. It helps me see the rocks in front of me better so I don't trip when hiking with my dog. It sounds like a dog is not for you...when you hike with a dog, it becomes the dog's hike.
Stella, you were blessing to this dog. Perhaps your role in his life was to help him with his ear and be part of his story. He seemed Verrry independent he’s off on his next adventure.
Amazing! Great 👍 however a sad time as well. Maybe their is the correct dog breed for this active young woman. A dog that will fulfill her needs and live a fulfilled life. Dogs are wonderful companions for humans in so many different lifestyles. What an amazing adventure! Adventure not over yet!
Tuff day for you emotionally on trail. Hounds will do this. There are 6' leashes you can get. Also GPS trackers for dogs. People who have Hounds do use them and they work. No doubt in my mind as many times he ran off that he can do 20 - 25 miles a day. Look at Woof Wear to get a pack so he can carry his own food. You two are good together. He just needs some training and you need some education but you can learn together and bond more in the learning process. It's been a joy watching you two together. Keep strong. He likes you. ❤ 🐕🚶♀️⛰🎒🏕👣🐾
Stella, I have really enjoyed following you, honey, and I know you’ve become very attached to this dog, BUT he is someone’s very expensive hunting dog and pet. There may be some little kid still crying over his loss. It’s time to drop him off at a shelter and they will attempt to find his family. Actually, I would have done this closer to where you found him. That’s the responsible and most compassionate thing to do. Had to share that. . .
All those deer in the woods have to really drive him crazy. I can imagine the strain on your heart all day long. But that picture at the end, that is priceless. Lot like having kids!
Ahhh. I can't bear to be on the roller coaster with you so I am gonna give you some advice and leave it outta of my head as I would my many nieces and nephews. Don't try to figure it all out today. It is ok to let it happen. Part of being an animal owner is letting go a bit as you cannot always keep them safe. It's a wonderful feeling when they're back. My cats are all out at night and it is such joy and relief every morning they come home. Tally won't harm humans so don't worry too much. If he leaves you it will be for another pack and not many of them on the trail. You'll go crazy with a leash so just let it happen. Food is the big motivator so feed him well every night and snacks along the way.

Or when the novelty of hanging out with hikers wears off he may go to the place his owner turned him loose to hunt . I do not think "Tally" feels lost at all .
I agree just keep going. It probably was an anomaly that he couldn’t find his previous owners. Maybe the last hour of the day you put him back on leash to be sure when you are done for the day he is with you.
As far as mileage goes he's running a fair number of bonus miles with his runs into the hollers. I second getting a harness and a long leash. He's clearly attached to you and a real sweetheart. It'll be a lot of work and learning but he looks like a great companion.
My last dog was a stubborn hound. He needed a “gentle leader” harness. With the gentle leader he was an absolute pleasure to take on walks. Without it, he was a chronic “puller”. This is turning out the most entertaining episode of the hike thus far! The dog needs to be chipped, neutered, and given heart worm/tick/flea preventatives pronto. He REALLY needs tick preventatives to be out there at all…
He's a black and tan hound . He wants to hunt and sleep , it's how they roll , he doesn't want adventure. I'm the daughter of a hunter and hound dog man , I know these dogs well ,lol .And this is why I don't long distance hike with my dog.
Kinda rough day, Tally is definitely going to be a challenge, he is great company but there are a lot of things for him to track and that is his job. Good luck.
You really need to find a home for Tally, or a shelter that can find him a home. Ticks are very heavy already this year, due to the mild winter we've had. The further north you go the more ticks you and Tally will encounter. Especially with him running off the trails into the woods. Take care of yourself and thank you for sharing your journey with us all.
This brings memories of my 1987 AT through hike. Dog started following me in Damascus. I said you have to decide. And hi did without any influence. I named him Yogi. He stayed with me for next 500 miles. He would be gone for many hours at a time. Always came back. There was no way to put a leash on him. It was very dry year. He would find water for us manny times way of the trail. Maybe saved my life 😊
Maybe it's because I'm so introverted; I bond better with animals over humans. You've got a pure heart Nyx. No matter the outcome, you did each other some good as the universe saw fit. ✌️❤️
@@nymph40 Last time I checked, dogs don't kill millions of other dogs because of politics, oil, money, greed, war, medicine, etc. And yeah, I stand by my statement. People suck and animals are better companions.
When training put some food in your pocket or other hand. state the command once and wait for him to comply. when he does, pet him and reward. always have him sit when he comes to you and reward with petting first then food. eventually you will remove the food and it will make it easier for future endeavors. Good luck with the rest of your trip.
His hound nose has abilities we can’t imagine. If you separate he can track you and find you easily. He could probably find his way back to his original home if he wanted to. I suggest that you stick to your daily hiking plan and try not to stop and wait for him. Maybe think of him as a fellow traveler who may or may not stay by your side.
I think y’all together make the perfect trail family ❤ Ditto the comment regarding a longer “trail” lead & his own dog pack so he can carry his own supplies. Hounds are very in tune to their human’s emotions proving both comfort & protection. They are very resilient & perfect for a long distance hiking! Besides, you’ve already mastered long distance hiking so this is a new life challenge you will soon master too!
This was a real emotional coaster to watch can only imagine your feelings out the experiencing it. Well done editing and sharing with us the experience.
I hate to make you feel badly, I know your heart is in the right place but that is not your dog. Somewhere near the place you found him is a small child crying because his dog ran away. You should probably try to find someone from that area who can help find his home. Keeping him with you is not really an option.
Whenever Tally pants hard he’s overheated. Dogs don’t perspire so they pant to cool off from exercise and hot days. He may need a water at intervals of running around. He’s a strong healthy hound. Doubtful he would get worn out. Sometimes the pads of their feet crack and need softened to heal quicker. Ask a vet about caring for Tally’s feet. Have fun 😊 Tally is just being the dog he was bred for. He will find you! Hounds noses are hundreds of time better smell than ours. As you walk you drop scent and Tally can smell that including his own scent he can backtrack his own scent until he crosses yours. Then he will be right back to you.
I understand Max/Tally is back with his owner, but in the event that you get yourself a dog in the future, you should definitely consider keeping your pup on a leash during hikes. Not only is it safer, but it avoids those episodes of them running off, and it also allows you to pace your pup if you’re doing big miles. Keeping him with you prevents him from wasting his energy running off and back, and allows them to conserve their gas for the miles by your side. All that said, and considering you never had a dog before, you’ve done an amazing job caring for him and your efforts are highly commended. Good job!
I have heard that true love is hard to find, you found true love with this loving hound dog. Life can be a rollercoaster people have said; with Jesus in your heart, hopefully a fun one . To Jesus be the glory, forever. Best wishes Stella, you are loved and appreciated by many people.
Normal for an a neutered dog, but I understand how you feel. Once you develop a bond with an animal, sometimes it can be frustrating. However, he could show right back up! He is a hound dog! If he doesn’t, just know that the trail put him in your path for a reason that has yet to be discovered. I am only eight minutes and so I’ll comment again later.
You’re the one being trained, not the dog. I doubt you could lose him if you tried. Just hike on and let him do his thing. You’ll both be happier I think. You can’t lose what you never owned, it’s hard ,I know
Forever Strong Stella! You are doing an amazing job as a first time furkid parent. Something that might help is to train with a whistle. I run with my dogs off leash and whistle three times and they know to return. Might take a little training, but with consistency on how many time you use the whistle and praise when he returns (whistle 3 x's then pause and repeat until her returns). 💙
If you intend on keeping the dog. And not waiting and wondering you're going to have to keep him leashed. Hounds follow their nose and they will chase and tree even bears. And leading him may cause injuries from the pulling on you. He looks strong enough to pull you down. Be careful with him. And have safe trails
I hope things work out with your hiking buddy lol he would be a lot of company for you on trail I'd get a longer leash like the one I have for my mastiff Pitt mix his leash is like 16 feet I got it at the local co-op but yeah I love Dogs so I would try the longer leash and hopefully it works out take care and I will be waiting for the next video to see how you guys are doing take care.. JS from VA
I know you don't want to use a leash but if he's not trained to come when you call (and he may not know the name Tali yet) you can't let him wander about.
I hope when you get home, you do get a dog. I would recommend you don't get a hound though, they do have a "wander" tendency. We have a rescue dog, perfect hiking and cuddle dog from our local shelter. We did DNA tents and he is pitbull/lab/catttledog mix. Really smart, really affectionate, great trail dog who stays right with us and loves the outdoors equal to the couch. LOL So I do believe you will find your perfect hiking companion.... he/she is out there waiting for you!!!!
There is a saying that people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Perhaps it is true for dogs as well. The challenge is to figure which one of those fits Tally.
Well you learned an important lesson. Dogs and thru-hiking simply do not mix. The problems you had, are the exact same problems I have seen other TH-camrs have when they tried to hike wit their dogs. This dog actually did way better than most do. At least he kept moving. Some dogs just decide right in the middle of the trail that they don't want to hike any farther and they just sit down and won't move.
God bless you sweetie. I am. Big dog lover they are nicer than any human. With that being said some of the people on this feed is down right crazy. She didn’t still this dog and for you that think a dog doesn’t belong the the hiking trail should have watched little Zoby last year. By the way there is a book out now about Zobys hike last year. I also have veterinarians in my family .
Tally could hike 100 miles so don’t worry about that. You don’t have to wait on him. He will follow you with his nose. Our hunting dogs we slowed down by toeing a log on the end of the twenty foot leed or leash. That’s what made the dogs stop and wait for you. They could pull that log around all day. Powerful animals in athletics terms. Tally might have been trained on a leed so the cotton leed dragging behind him might be enough to keep him close to you. Don’t put any loops in the leed for your hand. You don’t want that to get caught in a limb, tree or rock and get him tangled. That’s when the rope needs to break. 😊 you got this doggy momma hahaha 🤣.
I'd like to call out making extended phone calls while on trail. It's not necessary, and no more welcome than people playing music without headphones. My take. Thank-you.
Trade in the dog for an umbrella, you will be much happier. A dog on trail with an owner is hard, let alone a new dog owner. This is not the place to learn about dogs and the leash laws, where they aren't allowed like Smokey Mountains Nat Park. Plus I am sure the owner will be happy. The dog seems to be a well treated dog, no signs of abuse at all.
It won't work, he needs to hunt , it's in his genes . His greatest reward would be for her to run to him when he trees something and shoot it . I grew up around my Dads hunting dogs , they live for the chase.
If Tally had a Fitbit on it would show that he ran 40 miles today! I hope it all works out for you, it was a hard day for you. You are liking Tally’s hike and not your own.
I am just wondering how a fitbit would work on a 4-legged critter. Aren't they designed to measure the strides made by two legs? I'm not sure how strides made by two pairs of legs simultaneously could be accurately measured. Maybe scientists have already figured it out. Just sayin'.
He should be kept on a leash!! If you can’t keep him on a leash, then you need to have someone pick him up and taken off the trail. That breed of dog is known to chase smells as they are trained to hunt. It’s out of respect that you keep him on the leash for other hikers. If not, get him off the trail for his safety and the safety of you and others. Just saying, if your not comfortable walking with him on a leash, then send him home until your through with your hike. Be kind to the dog you found!! He seems to make you happy, but letting him run wild in the woods on a trail other people are hiking is not a responsible pet owner. In my opinion, I have y Lab that I hike with. You should get a longer leash and you have to be in control of him. Your the mom, so take control and make him understand your commands. You can train him to walk with you on the leash. Look at some TH-cam videos and you’ll be fine sweetheart!! Just keep him around as he makes you so happy and you can tell be your videos that you truly love and care for the big hound dog!!! Good luck!!! Safe travels!!
Also, many wilderness areas do not allow dogs, or dogs off leash. He does not come when you call, he does not heel, nor other necessary commands. When you hike through designated wilderness areas you have to be more strict. Having a dog chasing the animals is akin to feeding the wildlife so that they get accustomed to stealing people food - just something that one should not do. You should not have an untrained dog off leash. I know I sound judgey but it's not safe for the dog, for the wildlife nor for you since he pulls on you. Not to mention slowing your miles. Lastly, if you are determined to keep him, pick up panniers for him to wear so that he can carry his own food.
The dog is sweet and you have helped him so much, but he is ultimately not your responsibility. He is getting farther away from his original owners, as you get further from your goal. Find him a good home and focus on your hiking plans.
My first thought when you decided to hold onto the dog was you were not going to be happy having an animal dictate your pace. I feel for you, it’s a tough spot.
Tally’s ear is bothering him that’s why he shakes his head like he does. Did the vet say he had mites in his ear? Mites usually come from cats and other such animals. Doggy Momma hahaha 🤣
Something stuck between the dogs teeth ( such as dry food ) will cause them to shake their head until it is out from between their teeth. His ear may not be infected.
This poor dog is missing his family and home. More needs to be done on social media to find the owners. Stella it's wonderful you are taking great care of him; however, walking him further from his home may not be best. Has his photo been plastered over social media near where he met up with you?
Tally's nose consists of approximately 230-300 million olfactory cells, or scent receptors - 40 times the number in humans. He could track you to Katahdin.
He will find you again. Tally is hunting and doesn’t understand why you’re not hunting with you. He’s trying so hard to please you as a good hound dog. Give him time. He knows your sent.
Try to relax, he is a hound and will hunt , he's wondering why you don't come shoot what ever he's treed . He will find you , just hope he doesn't tree a bear. Leashing him is the only way to stop the hunt. I noticed he is an intact male , I bet he is owned by a hunter and ran into hikers on a hunt , his owner probably left a jacket he's worn by the place they entered the woods and has been checking that spot .That dog wasn't lost just goofing off with hikers , bless his hound dog heart . I bet you feel like you're hiking with a 4 legged toddler .
I enjoy watching your videos! BUT, PLEASE get that dog checked for a chip and find a rescue to take him and find his human. It's breaking my heart..... his human Must be missing him desperately as well as the doggy missing his home and human. Plus, that can't be easy on him hiking that much. And keep him on a leash.... he needs to get back home. I literally feel sick every time he runs off! 😭

Are there certain dogs that make good "Trail Dogs" and can do a lot of miles but don't wander so much? (Just out of curiosity.)

Good advice for most dogs. But you can’t train the hound out of a coon hound. He’s still going to wander off and track animals.

@Bizarb Oh, I'm introverted. 🤣 Outside of work, I spend 98% of my time alone and love it. 🙂 Animals rock, I do agree.
Next time you need an operation call your poodle
@@Bizarbuntil they have rabies and bite you
@@nymph40 Last time I checked, dogs don't kill millions of other dogs because of politics, oil, money, greed, war, medicine, etc.
An E coller used properly would help both of you stay safe and happy. Check out videos on how to use them.
I hate to make you feel badly, I know your heart is in the right place but that is not your dog. Somewhere near the place you found him is a small child crying because his dog ran away. You should probably try to find someone from that area who can help find his home. Keeping him with you is not really an option.
So sorry you having so much trouble a long lease would help you a lot keep on having fun and be safe out there all my best Ramon
Things will fall into place. Best of luck❤
garmin makes a great gps tracker for dogs. i use one on my pup. Has buzzer recall on it.
So sweet but tough going too.😊
Imagine a family missing their dog, now many miles away from where he is. Very sad.
Just keep hiking. The dog has been running off since you met him. You’ve gone from being hyper focused on hiking to standing around hollering for him.
There is a saying that people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Perhaps it is true for dogs as well. The challenge is to figure which one of those fits Tally.
Call of the wild!!!! I can't imagine hiking with my dog off-lead (or on lead!).
I call my heeler aussie with a squeaky toy. Various squeak lengths brings her back quickly. Hope this helps.
What a big beautiful handsome fella!!!!
Put a GPS collar on him Stella I’m pretty sure someone else found a dog like that on the trail last year or the year before
I bet the dog did 40 miles that day! You need a “gentle leader”! Keep him!❤️
Tally could hike 100 miles so don’t worry about that.
I wonder if a waist leash would be helpful, they just clip on your belt or around your waist allowing you to be hands free.
Great update. Press north🌲👍
That boy went home.
Remember: he's a hound dog and can smell you out a long way away. I would not worry.
I'd like to call out making extended phone calls while on trail. It's not necessary, and no more welcome than people playing music without headphones. My take. Thank-you.
You did your very best and give yourself a pat on the back for being so kind
Trade in the dog for an umbrella, you will be much happier.
A dog on trail with an owner is hard, let alone a new dog owner. This is not the place to learn about dogs and the leash laws, where they aren't allowed like Smokey Mountains Nat Park.
Plus I am sure the owner will be happy. The dog seems to be a well treated dog, no signs of abuse at all.
You can train him to stay closer. Do some short recalls and rewards. Call him back and reward him periodically.
It won't work, he needs to hunt , it's in his genes . His greatest reward would be for her to run to him when he trees something and shoot it . I grew up around my Dads hunting dogs , they live for the chase.
The dog can track you Just let him run around
Those ridges are often void of water and he may be leaving to find a drink.
I love your videos! ❣️👣👣
Don't forget to check your dog's paws. Big miles and no shoes might take a toll.
What is you yellow hoodie layer
If you get Tally back, put a airtag on him, that’s what we do. 👍🙏❤️
13:35 is a Sasquatch "Wood knock."
I wonder if a dog whistle would help him locate you
This dog is killing you! Lol. Just roll. He will always find you
Tally’s ear is bothering him that’s why he shakes his head like he does. Did the vet say he had mites in his ear? Mites usually come from cats and other such animals. Doggy Momma hahaha 🤣
Something stuck between the dogs teeth ( such as dry food ) will cause them to shake their head until it is out from between their teeth. His ear may not be infected.
@@robertsherwood803 she said in another video people who had dogs helped her and helped her clean the ears.
Your hound is most likely chasing deer. His nose won't have any problem finding you as you move down the trail.
Longer leash would be good . Dog pack mite slow him a little. Has he been neutered?
A longer leash increases the chances it will get wrapped around trees. Which is very time consuming..
This poor dog is missing his family and home. More needs to be done on social media to find the owners.
Stella it's wonderful you are taking great care of him; however, walking him further from his home may not be best.
Has his photo been plastered over social media near where he met up with you?
As of at least yesterday the dog was reunited with his owner. These videos are posted several days after the events for safety reasons.
Will see. ??????🐕🐕🐕🐕
hes not lost. hes knows where, he and you are, better than you do.
Maybe if he wares a pack and carry’s his food that will slow him down?! Worth a shot!
They are never long enough for me.
I wouldn't worry about that dog too much it's a hunting dog hounds follow their nose probably been living in them woods for years
Total miles fm Amicalola Falls: 458 (20.8%)
AT trail day 26 miles: 16
Avg. miles per day: 17.9
Estimated days to Katahdin: 97
Try to relax, he is a hound and will hunt , he's wondering why you don't come shoot what ever he's treed . He will find you , just hope he doesn't tree a bear. Leashing him is the only way to stop the hunt. I noticed he is an intact male , I bet he is owned by a hunter and ran into hikers on a hunt , his owner probably left a jacket he's worn by the place they entered the woods and has been checking that spot .That dog wasn't lost just goofing off with hikers , bless his hound dog heart . I bet you feel like you're hiking with a 4 legged toddler .
The dog might have a chip in him when you go to the vet check that out
I'm glad that your hike will be so much easier without the pooch. You really couldn't have hiked like this all the way to Maine. Good luck to you!
Tally’s nickname should be Tucan Sam, he follows his nose!
Too funny. Keep the puppy so maybe the rest of the hikers can catch up lol. In OZ we trust.
