Looking forward to your new vlogs. As a 50 something outdoor person I've found I have to alternate activities. If I do a big hike one day and the next day is beautiful, I have to do something else like biking or kayaking. Multiple days in a row hiking remind me that I left my "good" knee on Mt. Monadnock after many years of season passes there.

Great call out regarding seeing doctors and specialists before attempting the AT. Just finished my checklist of getting all of the approvals for my own thru hike. I'm rooting for you as I also have the same concern regarding the knees. My knees have always given me issues on the downhills even when I was half my age. It's my biggest fear.

I saw a video recently of a hiker wearing these sorts of straps while hiking, I think they are called "Patella Knee Straps". The person in the video wearing them said they work really well and they don't feel pain at all after wearing them. Hope your knees are alright!

Many years ago, when I was doing a lot of mountains in your neck of the woods, I had to stop because of knee pain, almost exclusively on the downhill (I should have used trekking poles). But what I found was that biking a lot allowed me to build up the muscles around the knee without putting stress on it. I suspect with all the hiking you will be doing, it too will build the support muscles up. I think you got this and I will be following along.

I walk every day. I kept having knee pain from an old minor injury. I finally figured out I was crossing my legs at my ankles when I relax. I stopped doing that and I make myself un-cross my ankles if I catch myself doing it. My knee pain has been reduced greatly since I stopped crossing my legs. Just sharing my experience in case it helps you or someone else. I'm rooting for you. Get well soon from your cold. 🚶‍♀️👍🏻🙂

Good luck with the knee pain. My husband (also a hiker) had similar knee pain to what you described in this video and we eventually found out it was a meniscus tear, but not until his meniscus inverted and he couldn't straighten his leg at all. Quick surgery and quick recovery and he was back out on the trails. I hope yours stays minor. 🤞

As an old man, I can say that my right knee pain comes and goes. (Yes, I did tear some cartilage like 15 years ago)
ODDLY ENOUGH, it feels the WORSE a couple weeks AFTER I get back from a long distance hike.
For some reason the month after long distance hikes, EVERYTHING hurts, (but oddly not DURING the hike).
My knee feels the BEST about 200 miles INTO a long distance hike (and there after). Why? I don't know.
Probably because I get big quadricep muscles from the hiking, and that straightens everything out.
I have an ACE bandage for my knee in my pack for just in case, but I really never use it.
You'll be fine. Just build up to 20's like you KNOW how to do.

Knee bending sideways damages joint, happens for me when turning corners when running or side-to-side move on rock scrambles. I have a UFLEX Compression Sleeve bought from Amazon that keeps my knee aligned.

I get the same knee pain/issues. I find that a lot of the times the pain is actually coming from a tight IT band and that if I roll that muscle out, it helps a lot! Garage grown gear sells lightweight cork massage balls that are great for rolling muscles out while on trail. Good luck with your hike! I look forward to following along!

Wishing you all the best Taylor. I’ve torn meniscus in both knees over the past 20 years, including just before Christmas. I’m hoping to finish the New Hampshire 4000 footers this summer, and I’ve found trekking poles a huge help especially downhill. Hang in there, you’ll be fine and we’ll be following your progress.

Hey girly :) I had the same thing after the AT with my knee! I had some knee pain before and I couldn’t fully bend or straighten my knee after my hike for like 3 weeks. Obviously I wasn’t taking care of it like I should have been. I’d def do your PT exercises and stretches while you’re out there. God luck, hope it doesn’t become an issue for you 💙

I am quite sure that neither you, have seen too many vlog on this subject. Good luck, i will be watching.

I've been getting good relief with cortisone injections. (prolonging another surgery) While trying a few different knee supports for distance hiking I found lightweight or adjustable that allow for swelling work best. I still can't hike more than half a day without wanting to take it off so lightweight and packable. And yes your walking sticks will definitely save your knees downhill! Thanks for sharing your adventures and have fun

Regarding your knee pain, I highly recommend you check out Athlean X's video titled "IT band syndrome and how to fix it". Your symptoms sound very similar to what I experienced. For the longest time, I thought I had a tear somewhere around my knee, but come to find out it was just a tight it band. Do the exercises he demonstrates in that video and see if it helps. It instantly fixed my problem.

Starting slow and building up slowly sounds like a solid plan. The brace should help the knee.

  • @robynroamsoutdoors
    @robynroamsoutdoors ปีที่แล้ว

Wow, you're starting pretty soon. Hiking is good exercise for hiking. I try to hike every chance I get and work on getting distance and elevation in. There are other exercises that are good as well like lunges and the sort. My knees are horrible as well but I can definitely recommend trekking poles as must haves.

I wondered, you sounded like you had a cold in the last few videos. I hope you're right and you've got your immune system trained so you won't catch anything, any time soon. Covid seems infinitely catchable, and hikers were catching it in towns last year. Much as I love town stays, I'd suggest trying to limit your exposure when you're in towns. To me the trail seems like a good place to avoid most airborne illnesses. Best of luck and health to you!

Any long distance or section hiker would agree that hiking is the best form of conditioning for a long hike.
I often train w/ my spare pack filled w/ about 25 lbs of water bottles with trekking poles to stabilize.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to do much hiking this year, so I will hike vicariously thru you. Thanks. 😁
P.S. I still walk 4-5 days a week and do strength exercises 3x a week at my local Senior Center.

Regarding the knee, I have something very similar. Besides trekking poles, a knee sleeve (not brace) works wonders to stabilise mine. 5 mm is really good and still offers flexibility but you may want smaller mm if you need a ton of stretch. Just a thought! Anyways, yay for starting soon! 🎉

I've been dealing with knee pain and hiking for about 15 years. I completed the NH48 in 2021 with serious knee pain whenever I was hiking downhill. Trekking poles help a lot, make sure you put your weight on them correctly going downhill. Knee braces help a little but not much. What helped me the most and was an absolute game changer for my knees was diet believe it or not. I'm now a firm believer that inflammation is what causes the majority of joint pain. This will sound weird but I eat strictly meat now with no sugar, seed oils, processed foods, dairy or even vegetables anymore and it feels like I have a brand new set of knees now. I can literally run down stairs and mountains now even though I'm almost 50 years old. My hiking energy is insane now. I can actually hike all day on an empty stomach, I don't even bring food on day hikes anymore and I can go all day without having to stop and rest.

Why do you ship your gear to Georgia? USPS? I ask because I thought you drove to Springer Mountain/Amicalola Falls and transported your gear with you. Can you talk about selecting a spot to hang your bear food bag? Can you demonstrate tossing your bear food bag over a branch? And retrieving it the next morning?

Don't forget; for you, being young and hiking 4K mountains in NH, 16 miles is probably a good starting mileage but for someone in their 60's (there's a lot of people that age that hike the AT), 16 miles a day in the beginning in the mountains of Georgia is too much. 8 miles a day for them is a lot better amount to start and then they can ramp up. Joint pain is the worst! As a 22-year injury-free Ironman Triathlete and Coach, I attribute my injury prevention success to 1-2x/day foam rolling and self-massage. For knee pain, I think the issue is typically knotted up quad muscles. I'm also a biomedical engineer who has worked with orthopedic & neurosurgeons my whole career and they do not know or understand this. Sorry but that's not what they're taught. Happy to help more if anyone wants to contact me. Good luck!
