Detour is a 1945 American film noir directed by Edgar G. Ulmer. Al (Tom Neill), a pianist at a New York nightclub, is dating a singer, Sue (Claudia Drake). However, Sue, determined to further her success, leaves him and moves to Los Angeles. Unable to give up on her, Al hitchhikes with her and heads west.
Al takes a ride in Haskell's (Edmund MacDonald) convertible in Arizona. Haskell has a scratch on his arm, which he says was inflicted by a woman. At night, when Al is driving the car to replace Haskell as he falls asleep, it starts to rain heavily. Al opens the passenger door to wake Haskell up so he can close the roof of the car, but Haskell falls to the ground. Al hides Haskell in the grass after her death due to a heart attack, and continues her journey disguised as Haskell.
Al takes Vera (Ann Savage), who was standing at a gas station, into her car. Vera, who had been sleeping in her passenger seat for a while, wakes up and asks Al where Haskell is. The woman who scratched Haskell was Vera. Al ends up telling Vera about her past. Vera threatens Al if he doesn't do her bidding, she'll tell everything to the police. The two, calling themselves Mr. and Mrs. Haskell, rent an apartment in Los Angeles and begin living together.
Al and Vera go to a used car store to sell Haskell's car. As Al stammers when his girlfriend's clerk asks him about her car insurance, Vera comes into her office and tells Al that they are no longer selling her car. Vera had opened the glove compartment of her car and found a newspaper article reporting that Haskell's father was in critical condition.
The two return to the apartment and begin arguing. Vera insists that Al should impersonate Haskell and obtain Haskell's father's inheritance. Al opposes Vera's proposal, as she does not know Haskell well enough. Vera locks herself in her bedroom with her phone while Al goes to open her window. Al tries to stop Vera from calling the police by pulling on the telephone line that runs from under her door. He rams the door open and enters the bedroom, only to find Vera suffocated with the telephone wire around her neck. Al leaves Vera's body there and leaves her apartment.
As Al continues hitchhiking again, a police car stops in front of him. Al gets into the police car as the police officer tells him to do. The police car carrying Al drives away on the night road. Al - Tom Neill
