This reservoir was constructed in the early 1940"s by my grandfather and my uncles. It was used to provide irrigation water to the fields that were located to the east of the reservoir. There was a cabin, corrals, and a hand dug water well about a quarter mile down stream of the reservoir. There was another set of corrals a couple hundred yards below the reservoir. This was used as a base for grazing our cattle on, at that time, both private and federal lands as this was "checker board" land meaning every other section was private land.
Thank you for the info. Very much appreciated. We did find the well, still there and still has water albeit people dropping branches down it. Also I think it's still checkerboard land .. at least the maps I have still show it. Thanks again for the comment!
Can you tell us some more? Does the reservoir rely on occasional heavy rains or a spring? Why did your people abandon it if that's not an intrusive question.
Beautiful! We just purchased property north of Reno-Sparks, Nevada in the Warm Springs range... looking forward to putting in a pond at the base of the mountain for the wild horses! Great video! Thank you for posting!
Wow I bet you're going to have a really cool place. And the horses will certainly thank you for giving them a nice area as well. Thank you for watching and the nice comment!! Wish you luck with your move and improvements!
Spent most of my summers camping up there growing up. It was always a somewhat hideaway but over the years its become well known. Love it up there!! I was surprised to see it on TH-cam lol brings back memories
Unfortunately most places now days are becoming well known. Even the places you'd think would stay hidden. We're trying to capture their beauty without saying locations before they're all completely run down. Glad we could bring back some memories for you!!!
As John Smith said, using a metal detector around these very old abandoned homesteads can reveal very interesting things and coins of the day. It is just a suggestion, I know that this sort of equipment is very expensive and for most people unaffordable. Nice videos you take, lovely countryside.
I have noticed if you strap the camera to your chest it works more smoothly...as you dont move your body as much as your head...so the camera you have will do fine I bet...good luck...
If your actio0n camera supports it -- enable stabilization, fisheye correction, and go for a slightly less wide FOV (field of view) -- that should make the image a bit smoother and I'll get a little less queasy!!! 🙂 Thanks for all that you do -- I hope that no one chases after you for "claim jumping"!!!
Just a thought. I don't know if you need a pickup for anything in particular, but I've done a lot of off road traveling and long distance traveling in my Subaru Outback. It gets great gas mileage, it's comfortable and has the absolute best all wheel drive in the world! If you need a pickup for ground clearance the Subaru can be raised and with the absence of the differential "pumpkin" in the rear, it gives you great clearance over the hump you find in the middle of dirt roads! Just something to consider.
You know I've seen them on the road (lifted Subarus that is) but the only subaru I've ever been around personally was my friends 07 sti that I rebuild the engine on. Currently I have too many projects that I'm trying to finish up but I'd be open to something different. I will say though .. my truck has more done to it to make it a great all around vehicle (catered to wheeling) then most people even know exist. Anyways, thanks for the comment and suggestion. Really appreciate that!!
Thank you for the nice comment! We're going to refilm this place in better quality once the trees start leafing out again. Plus, there's some cool stuff there that we didn't film. Lot more history info, too.
Enjoyed your video. I have been living and traveling in my 25 foot winnebago Warrior with my little dog Tinkerbell filming stuff I see. I will be on my fifth year in August. I am still trying to up my game with better equipment. What is cool is to look at your old videos compared to newer ones and seeing how things change. Love the pond. I do a lot of abandoned places and places I camp for free. I have a 454 chevy in my motorhome so I understand how you feel about the high gas prices. I get about 10 miles a gallon Good luck and Ill be checking out more of your videos! Great job!
Thank you so much for the comment! I appreciate the noticing of the videos getting better and I also just received the gimbal I ordered so they'll be getting better. I love traveling and exploring, what you do sounds really awesome!
The person who created it and planted all those trees might have never seen it flourish like this. It goes to show that it is possible to turn a desert land into a lush fertile place. Geoff Lawton is an expert in doing just that with techniques that is called Permaculture.
It is pretty crazy. I wish I knew when it was made. The trees look quite old. Definitely turned it into a beautiful spot. However the desert also has a alot of spots similar that are natural but the more the better haha. Thank you for the comment!
Ive seen people create small perma culture ponds like this using 50x50 liners and much larger and its relatively cheap a few hundred dollars. Sure it could leak at some point, but its retaining all that water.
@@AgentSmith-x9p Pond liner is good for fish ponds, but not so much for permaculture purposes. If permaculture was just about holding water then a watertank would be far more practical and durable for the long term. Permaculture is about regenerative farming which restores the natural water tables and the soil quality. That doesn't happen with a pond liner. Those trees that you see in the video would not be thriving if a pond liner was used. Because the roots from the trees would not be able to access the water. Or better said, the water would not be able to access the roots because of the pond liner. unless you would use a sprinkler system or drip irrigation. But the beauty of this location is that it is a man made pond, but a self sustainable pond that doesn't require any human input or maintenance. It also heavily depends on the geology. If you have a thick clay layer you do not need a tank or any liner. Because the clay will naturally hold water. So it all depends on your local circumstances and what the costs would be what the best option is.
Appreciate all the comments. Glad you liked the video. We're hoping to do a better quality video of this place this spring .. if we can. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Good thing you didn't mess with that marker too much. Tampering with claim markers can be a felony and in the wrong areas can get you shot, if the wrong person sees you. That kind of thing doesn't really happen much anymore, but it can. Also, you'd never be charged with a felony for moving a marker, unless they thought they could prove you were doing it for fraudulent gain, or out of malice.
Interesting stuff to know. The getting shot part i definitely believe. Most of the markers I've seen have paperwork with them and that's what i was curios about. Had no bad intentions at all. We were planning on reshooting that video this summer with our new camera setup but unfortunately this summer has been too crazy. Maybe next summer. Hopefully get out to some new spots soon though. Thank you for the comment!!
Native navada'n here... love the 🏜... people don't realize what the desert can really hold... keep up the content... we are starting a similar channel this month... good luck with your future adventures.
I've seen that myself and I've been trying. Hard in the moment when you're excited haha. It will get better. Probably a new camera and mounting setup soon too. Thank you for the feedback
Thank you! That's what it's all about for us. We're definitely amateurs at videos and what not but we're always trying to get better. Really appreciate the watch and comment!
I used to get US Geological Survey Maps and study them for areas I wanted to explore and they were pretty good at identifying springs and it was a nice treat to go find them.
Thank you very much! We're trying. Unfortunately our little summer break has seemed to have messed up TH-cam's algorithm thing cause our views have dropped drastically. But we're still out recording videos and exploring.
Wow, in eight days you now have over one-thousand subscribers 😀. I'm now one of them. I lived in Nevada for a while. I went to UNLV in 1990/91. I also taught school for one year in Ely, NV. I'm now back in Minnesota, but if I ever retire I wouldn't mind living back there in the Winter months. Thanks for exploring 😊 for us... I didn't hear any frog sounds, but I'm wondering that if you came there in late March and early April you may hear the western chorus frog 🐸.
Thanks for the comment! I can't see the plants too good in the video nor do I remember them but I'm thinking they're flannel plants early in their growth cycle. They have many different names as well. The bird calls sound like Sand Pipers to me. They're very common to see in these parts but again I don't remember what all we saw there. It's been almost a year now. However .. we are planning a revisit here soon once the trees start to leaf out again so we can shoot a much better quality video. I will try and remember to look out for those plants as well as pay attention to the bird calls and just get a lot more detail on the stuff that's around there in general. Again thank you for the comment and thanks for watching too.
Dude! I couldn't watch it because of the camera shaking so bad. I know you have it mounted on your head but you really need to hold it and pan slowly so as to not make people dizzy from trying to watch it. Tanks.
May I ask what platform you're viewing the video with? My phone, my girlfriends phone and my computer aren't showing really any shaking at all. On that note though I actually have a hand held setup but it's way shakier then the head mount. Your head is naturally pretty smooth but yes I do turn my head quickly. Bad habit that I'm trying to break. Also looking into a better camera with a stabilization feature maybe as well as a stabilizing mount like the ones others have suggested. I definitely want to get something that is better though, no questions there.
So I did some exploring of nearby canyons this weekend and the adjacents have multiple springs with literally grassy plains. Saw quite a few toads too. One spring was literally bubbling out of the ground. So my assumption is that pond has to have a spring under it.
when an artificial pond and swale system is done properly, a few seasonal rains will fill it and it won't evaporate. The key is making it deep enough, bermed well along the edges and not with a material that too easily drains, and i would imagine all those old established trees were planted intentionally there as their root systems hold the berm walls together and provide shade to slow evaporation. All these "badlands" are becoming more and more popular homestead destinations having this knowledge. The only places left with minimal zoning restrictions, and it can be made into your own microclimate paradise.
Awesome! Glad to hear. I never noticed it myself until I put it on the tv. But I want to keep everyone happy and I appreciate all the feedback so I ordered a Gimbal. Better quality will be here hopefully next video
Enjoyed you're video.looking forward to watching previous videos. I did the same as a kid and young man . There is always something interesting in the woods and at old home places. I'm a new subscriber and believe this is just the beginning if you want it to be. Thank you for what you're doing. Prayers for y'all on you're journeys. Beware oof hidden wells at these shows sites . God bless
Thank you very much for the kind words! Exploring and learning about the past is a great love of ours. I hope this is just the beginning of our channel turning out great but we're not going to stop trying. Funny you mentioned wells, this homestead actually has one that I found later and I will post in a future video. First time I've ever seen a rock well before.
Looks like a really cool place. I always wonder who lived there, why they’re gone etc. you’re doing a good job on your vids, just need a little fine tuning, that’s all. You’ll get there. Have a great one!
Awesome! They're great trucks. It's built to go just about any where. Just loves gas haha. I just received a gimbal so video stabilization will be way better
Hey man thank you. Appreciate the nice feedback. We actually ended up getting a gimbal. It seems to work pretty good. Check out our other videos though if you're interested. Feedback on those would be cool too. I thought the head was a good spot since its like your eyes but didn't work too well. Never tried the body mount. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
It's a hard place to throw off enough profit to make a living. But, if there are tadpoles, it'd be a great place to plant some fish. Stick a boring bar in those trees to tell the history of the place.
Did you take the road that goes up behind the pond? Never been up there, but just noticed it on google maps. Doesn't look like it goes anywhere, but sometime satellite view isn't good enough to make everything out and you find cool mines or ruins.
Haha wow that's cool you found it. No I didn't go that way. The road cut through the pond and there was literally hundreds of tad poles so I left them be. I did take the road that heads south just below the pond by the homestead .. which incidentally I recently found out there was indeed a house there that burned down at some point. But that road heads back to some springs, bubbling pretty good when I was there and there was toads by them. One fork hit a fence and there was a guy on a side by side so I turned around. Other fork hit more springs and had some great camping spots though.
Not a Ford guy but I like your truck. I got myself a cheaper action camera but gotta wait till I get my new engine installed in my jeep before I get out and get some footage, I'll be doing prospecting, exploring and offroad recovery.
I'm I'm El paso. No idea where yall at. This is your first video I've seen but yup I'm always looking for wheeling buddies. Friends at all really. I don't fool with nobody coz most people ain't worth a damn anymore
The fact that those tree's are green means there is probably a source of shallow spring water flowing year round which should make the property very valuable ! I seriously DOUBT that the owner has abandoned that property ! DID you research that property at the local tax office to see if all property taxes have been paid and are current ?
Looks to me to be hand built as of mass of water catchment system and over time it's sealed itself so that it can hold water all year around. That is one massive Swale
Yes definitely not natural. There used to be a ranch house/homestead below it and they ran cattle. Not sure when it was actually "built" but definitely a cool/fun spot. Thanks for watching!!
Like your adventures. Subbed. Seems like people are drawing to your adventures... If you want to be a serious TH-camr, I want to put up some serious suggestions for you. Your video resolution seems to be 640X480 in a box square format, which is a no no today. At least film your videos in the Full HD (FHD), ie 1080p, with an aspect ratio of 16:9, and pixel size at 1920 x 1080. The common name is 1080p (film at least at 1080p). Six months or a year from now, you may want to film in 4K, which would be a treat for your viewers.... You have the power of editing to play with. Edit out the shakiness. Edit out the sharp left and right turns. Edit to lengthen or compress time. Film multiple shots and edit the best one to your film/video. Show extreme close-ups of plants or fauna you want to show us, like your finger touching the tad poles, or claim markers, or anything that piques your interest. We want to see what you see. Yes, stabilize your video; and edit and turn the camera to you once in a while. Film you talk to us. You are the star, film you in your environment. If you want more advice like this, I still have more. I'm hoping you go big in TH-cam, brother.
Wow I'm not even sure what to say. Thank you!!! Screen shotted your comment. You said that you want to see exactly what I see and I agree 100% and that's what I want to do. Thank you for the ideas of how to do that better. I am looking at new cameras and now I know more of what to look for. Really appreciate your comment!! This is all a big learning experience and everything helps
Would it be possible to look to see if there was a deed filed in the county records? Sounds like you got too close to a Killdeers eggs. They lay their eggs on the bear ground. They are chamoed so well you will miss them just sitting there.
Well, I did some research, and it shows the whole area as public land. That's off the county website. Doubled checked against family properties to make sure it was up to date. Very interesting ... The Killdeer thing is quite interesting as well. I bet you're right. Looked up what their eggs look like, and yea, there's no way anyone is going to see their eggs even if you're looking directly at them. Really hope we didn't accidentally step on any of them 😕
Yea we found alot of history on this place along with the Civil War era fort that was near by. Unfortunately life has kept us from getting back up their and shooting a better updated video. One day ...
Hello, I saw your listing on Craig's list for this channel and checked you out. I LOVE this sort of exploring local sites videos. Thanks for posting. I think I have seen that camo truck around Silver Springs, am I right?
Thank you!! Should check out the video description haha, I just updated it this morning from the original. Video is almost a year old now and we've been using a gimbal for every video posted after this one. Actually if it wasn't for the immense amount of feedback on this video we wouldn't have known about the stabilization issues. So we listened and upgraded. Still looking at better cameras too. Be sure to check out our other videos too though. Lots of other cool places and of course with a much more stable video on the newer ones. Some really awesome spots in the older videos as well but might be a little Shakey. Appreciate the comment!!
If the water has a lot of plant life growing in it, it's because it's shallow. If this is a desert pond, you did not mention seeing animal foot prints around the pond. That would indicate what animals are living nearby.
Watched your video, Recommendation, slow your butt down, get a better camera, other than that I liked your material....The Scenery most Excellent.......Thanks......JB.
Us too. There was a homestead there that burned down at some point and I think they are the ones that did the pond but I have found zero info on it unfortunately.
That is an amazing piece of history. I always wonder about these old homesteads and who made them. Was the land sold off?
Where is that at it was seriously cool looking
Can you tell us some more? Does the reservoir rely on occasional heavy rains or a spring? Why did your people abandon it if that's not an intrusive question.
Hey is this on bramblett road
Interesting stuff! You might try using a gimbal instead of a camera strapped to your head. The constant jerky motion is difficult to watch.
Thank you for the feedback. I'll look into that for sure
Agree
hmm i didnt notice it til i read the comments. i like the pov style though
I agree,
Put the camera on a 3 lb dumbbell. The added mass will smooth your shot

hi from Australia , enjoyed the video thanks mate

The only way it keeps water in it all year is because it's spring fed.
That's what we figured too .. no other way
Gas prices never go down. Back in '02 we all freaked out at the rumor of prices going up to $2/gallon. Guess what, that's cheap now.

My questions: Man made or not, where is the water coming in and where does it go out? Any guess as to how far back it was set up or dug out?
So I did some exploring of nearby canyons this weekend and the adjacents have multiple springs with literally grassy plains. Saw quite a few toads too. One spring was literally bubbling out of the ground. So my assumption is that pond has to have a spring under it.
@@camoadventures that area has many springs including hot springs
when an artificial pond and swale system is done properly, a few seasonal rains will fill it and it won't evaporate.
Maybe a spring? The evaporation rate probably equals the inflow if its full year around
Me from earthquake prone california and I go on lots of theme park rides so the dipping and tipping don't bother me none Hey no headache neither !
Thank you! Much appreciated! It's all a learning experience
I think this is what you would really call "Off Grid" living!
It's very considerate of you not to disturb this rare gem of nature.
Yes we try to leave stuff in good shape. Wouldn't be right to say it and not do it. Thanks for watching. Be sure to check out our other videos too!
If you can find some Nails around the Old Homestead. can possibly tell you the year the house that's if you can find them
Didn't see any squares at this place
nice camping spot
As long as the mosquitoes stay down haha
Once you get your image stabilization worked out your videos will be more fun to watch. Nice old Ford I had a 1972.
Awesome! They're great trucks. It's built to go just about any where. Just loves gas haha. I just received a gimbal so video stabilization will be way better
A word of advice. Wear boots and long pants when you are stomping around in undeveloped areas. You'll live longer.
Spring fed maybe? Very cool to see stuff like that.
Great content.. one suggestion.. put the gopro on your chest bro. Keep it up. Every other week is cool, we get it. We're out here struggling too.
Beautiful place, like an oasis in the middle of nowhere.
Very beautiful. Thank you for the comment
I hate goat head stickers!
I love exploring places and finding springs and stuff.
New sub!
Thank you so much!!
slow down the camera movements. swinging the camera from side to side is not good. beautiful area, Thank you for sharing.
Not a Ford guy but I like your truck. I got myself a cheaper action camera but gotta wait till I get my new engine installed in my jeep before I get out and get some footage, I'll be doing prospecting, exploring and offroad recovery.
Thanks man and when you get some videos or what not, send us the links. I'll check them out. If you're local ish ... We could go wheeling
If you do send anything, make a new comment, replies to comments don't show up for some reason.
I'm I'm El paso. No idea where yall at. This is your first video I've seen but yup I'm always looking for wheeling buddies. Friends at all really. I don't fool with nobody coz most people ain't worth a damn anymore
Congratulations 🎉🍾🎈
Cool spot. You should get a hand heald camera with shock protection. You head setup gives a headache. Good luck building your channel.
We got a gimbal around a year ago. And we're looking at getting a whole new camera setup here very soon. Thank you for watching and for the comment!!
im sure this is where all the wildlife will show up eventually. a valuable resource in that climate.
Sure wish that I had a pond on my desert 5 acres!!
We do too haha
A really cool place looks like.
Kool stuff as being native NM and liven west Tex …
As long as there's no stagnant water around anywhere there should be no mosquitoes.👍
Just subscribed, thanx outback. The wood in the ground there looks like sleeper type...?
Some of the posts looked like they could've been
The fact that those tree's are green means there is probably a source of shallow spring water flowing year round which should make the property very valuable ! I seriously DOUBT that the owner has abandoned that property !
DID you research that property at the local tax office to see if all property taxes have been paid and are current ?
No we didn't. No no trespassing signs or gates. Blm land all around so we checked it out
What state is this in
Looks to me to be hand built as of mass of water catchment system and over time it's sealed itself so that it can hold water all year around. That is one massive Swale
Yes definitely not natural. There used to be a ranch house/homestead below it and they ran cattle. Not sure when it was actually "built" but definitely a cool/fun spot. Thanks for watching!!
Awesome video
Near Where was this recorded? Thank you.
Really hope we didn't accidentally step on any of them 😕
I was going to ask where you were but when you said five dollar gas , I knew your in Newsom County. Beautiful country sad you have him as Governor.❤
Surprisingly we aren't ..but close enough haha thanks for the comment!
There used to be an old house up there. In the 2000s
We called the pond “The Frog Pond”
Yea we found alot of history on this place along with the Civil War era fort that was near by. Unfortunately life has kept us from getting back up their and shooting a better updated video. One day ...
Hello, I saw your listing on Craig's list for this channel and checked you out. I LOVE this sort of exploring local sites videos. Thanks for posting. I think I have seen that camo truck around Silver Springs, am I right?
Well thank you! Glad you like the videos! Also glad the post is getting seen. Yes you probably have. We get around Northern Nevada pretty good
cool man , did you see any Charging stations out there ?
Hahaha .. I don't think that's the right place to take that kind of vehicle
Probably no fish in there , If there were there would not be that many tadpoles. Good place to go deer hunting!
I didn't know that about the tadpoles, interesting, thank you for sharing!
Enjoyed this video. Please consider getting a gimble and tell us which state you are in. 🥰
You should put a trail camera by the pond and see what kind of wildlife shows up.
There was one by the claim if I remember right. Wouldn't surprise me if someone has one by the pond too. Bet you'd see a lot of animals.
Hey Buddy where is this spot located
Watched your video, Recommendation, slow your butt down, get a better camera, other than that I liked your material....The Scenery most Excellent.......Thanks......JB.
Thank you! Yes we're always trying to get better. I have a gimbal now. Eventually will have a better camera too
Lovely desert oasis but I would like to know more about who dug the pond and who lived there ?
Us too. There was a homestead there that burned down at some point and I think they are the ones that did the pond but I have found zero info on it unfortunately.
Yay tadpoles !
Hello from Suwannee County Florida
Hello from Crystal River
Where is this property and is it for sale
where is this,
That pond looks nice. I like the less talking.
Less talking, got it. Originally someone told me more talking haha. Thank you for the feedback!
Nice truck.
Heck yea! Thanks!
