Yep, one of my best friends is a sommelier and he's adamant that the goal of wine tasting should be gaining an understanding of what you, personally, like best so you know what to look for and ask for to have the best experience you can. He says you can tell when people are only in it for the exorbitant expense, and he and other wine pros lose respect for those folks

You killing me not opening those red wines at least 15 minutes (1h is optimal) before tasting. Almost all wines can benefit from decanting. The aeration process makes them taste smoother and fruitier. Oxygen exposure is especially good for younger wines with very strong tannins -- Yeah I know this sounds bougie, but I am just from one of those countries where we drink wine everyday from our 7th birthday
