Hello all, the machine I use to face the back of the wheel is a Rockwell radial drill press that has been modified. All equipment came from a gentelman that owned C&H wood wheels years ago.

We really take for granted how easy we have it compared to how it was done 100 years ago

That rotating milling/drilling machine is bloody brilliant. Just shows, you DONT have to invest in cnc to get precise and attractive results.

I agree. What a genius machine. An arc on a circle fills the working surface.

I’m still looking for the fellies the spokes were pressed into.
All I saw was the steel rim.

If you look up the word felloes you would find out that you did indeed see the felloes.

This looks like a Model T wheel although I suppose it could be for some other vehicle. If it’s for a T the steel rim is the felloe. There were no wood fellows used on T wheels except on early Ts without demountable rims.

I did not see the spoke end to rim being turned. I am currently making some myself 60 spokes for 5 wheels plus for mistakes. I have made one out of pine for a trial.

There are two wagon/carriage wheel builder’s tools used. One is a cone with a blade on the inside. This is used in a brace and bit to put a cone shaped taper on the end of the spoke. Once this is done another special tool with a blade is inserted at the end of the cone and used to turn the tapered end into a tendon. Hard to explain but the tools work well. I used them to put the tendons on the spokes for my Model T wheels. You can often find the tools at flea markets.

Wear those gloves and one day when the blade grabs it you won't have a finger to put back in the glove. Not a smart move brother
