I remember those Caddys at the Broadmoor. I was stationed at Fort Carson just a few miles away from '66 to '68. I met a lady who invited me to her Christmas party at the Broadmoor. First class all the way the lady, dinner & dancing to 2 live bands. Great memory of a great evening.
1959 is one of my favorite years for GM cars. This car is just too big. I used to have a '59 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery, but I think it's kinda small compared to this one. The glass in this vehicle is awesome! The front windshield is pretty standard '59 GM wrap around, and those two small triangular rear wrap around windows in the back give the whole body glass this curved flow. The glass roof is incredible!

Nicely done video & history. But, GM didn't build the complete car. All Broadmoor Skyviews were custom jobs done by Superior Coach in Ohio from the firewall back, as you can see from the Broadmoor badge in the rear door. Superior is still in business, building hearses, funeral flower cars, custom limos. They also built ambulances much on the same basis as the Skyviews.
Buck Olsen, You know exactly what Superior was all involved in throughout the years, my Father actually Engineered Concrete Accessories for Superior. Thanks for bringing back memory's of my Dads legacy!
Buck Olsen you are correct. You could see the superior tag in the engine bay. The dash covered in leather is commonly performed by them on a lot of their service vehicles.
That Caddy is fantastic..!! I used to have a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville ambulance that was build by Superior. It was beautiful. It came with a 421 CI 4 bbl dual exhaust, posi. Fully optioned with electric windows, power seat and AM/FM

What a cool car. It's a little surprising to see such an impressive vehicle without air conditioning, but maybe the Broadmore hotel only used it in areas where AC would have been unnecessary. Either way, I'm sure trips in this care were unforgettable .

She is another beautiful example of automotive styling. The Cadillac Hearses, some of them had Caddy bodies on truck chassis,, I believe. Do we know what happened to the other 2?
Wonderful video footage of a rare coach. Best viewed with volume off however to counteract multitude of inaccuracies. There were in fact six '59 Broadmoor Skyviews made by Superior Coach Co of Lima, OH - which is heavily documented. (All six examples survive.) Based on Series 86 chassis, GM merely supplied from firewall forward.

Wow. A friend recommended this channel to me a while back and, after nearly a year, I put on the jacket that had the piece of paper where I'd written down your channel name. I've been watching a lot of your videos and really love your format and the details you focus on. Only thing missing are maybe a couple 4-doors, although I know they're rare at car shows since everybody wants the cool, sporty two-door models (Me included) but it's still interesting to always see the different designs manufacturers offered on their four door models, especially in the late 50s and early 60s. And trunks, because the detailing in some classic car trunks is truly amazing (along with the sheer size), although I know many keep personal items and even extra parts in the trunks so it might be an unrealistic thing to ask for. Great videos Lou and I look forward to seeing even more classics in 2016!
+Sedan57Chevy Hi Sedan57Chevy, Hi, You've clearly been watching the details. There are SOOO many AWESOME cars to choose from I had to help myself and put some rules in place. I don't do trucks or motorcycles because it's called "My Car Story". I don't to trunks because you're correct, usually there is "Junk in the trunk", and it saves time for the Viewer who's viewing, because generally it's not all that exciting. I don't do 4 doors since people usually like to view the "Sporty 2 doors". However...occasionally I do 4 door (type in TH-cam "My Car Story with Lou Costabile 1958 Cadillac Caddy Eldorado Brougham 4 Door in Black paint"), and every now and then a truck may show up (type into TH-cam "My Car Story with Lou Costabile 1955 Ford Beatnik Bubbletop & Engine Start @ Klairmont Kollections"), and sometime the trunk is so special, I do one (type into TH-cam "My Car Story with Lou Costabile 1947 Hudson Series 178 Pickup RestoMod at the World of Wheels"). The bottom line, THANK YOU for being so kind for sharing your comments with me. Take care, Lou

Honestly I reckon with the chrome trimmed "pie" windows allowed for a more versatile coach IMO. But I also like how it seemed like Superior had alot of fun and creative freedom with the commercial chassis that Caddy/GM gave them. I honestly wish that the Ecto-1 was a Superior, even though Harold and Maude had probably bet them to it
The Broadmoor Hotel is located in Colorado Springs, not somewhere in the mountains. These cars were used to carry hotel guests to and from the airport and train station, as well as tours up Pikes Peak. The small A in the Broadmoor emblem was meant as an insult to the Antlers Hotel, the Broadmoor's main competition in Colorado Springs.
What a way different automobile this is! Never knew of such a Caddy. Boy id that big and very interesting too! Thanks for sharing Lou and as always great to see your different cars on you tube.
This car wasn't built at the Cadillac factory. It was built by Superior Coach Corp. on a Cadillac commercial chassis. The same chassis used to build hearses, ambulances, combinations and flower cars.

This vehicle could seat a lot of passengers. This vehicle appears to have a lot in common with the Cadillac Miller Meteor, which was used for ambulances and hearses.

Cadillac built the commercial chassis but Superior Coach who builds hearses and ambulances was commissioned by The Broadmoor to build the car to their specs. This guy is making up the story as he goes along.

Wow! That’s unique! I thought Superior Coach was the builder from the style. S&S (Hess & Eisenhardt) and Miller-Meteor were the other 2 major builders of funeral cars and ambulances. I have heard of the Broadmore through “Homicide Hunter: Lt Joe Kenda”, who was head of the Colorado Springs PD major crimes squad. There were several homicides which involved Broadmore employees.

I remember when General Motors once built professional cars, the hearses, limousines and combination coaches that could be used both as a hearse or ambulance. I can remember the days when we had a combo and folded down the side jump seat, removed O2 bottles, the Q2 on top, flipped up the rollers and placed landau bars on rear side windows when it was to be used as a hearse.

Just a great video . I have bin to this museum and you are right lol . This car is massive !!!! I do think it would be fun to have a ride in . But hard to drive . Thank for showing it and take care .
Actually, easy to drive - just realize that with 156 inch wheelbase, it takes more room to turn and park. "Rides like a Cadillac." I still have my 59 Superior hearse which was my daily driver for 4 years.

59' was a great year for Cadillac. And this example is out of this world. It defines retro. Looks like to me that this Cadillac chassis might also have been used for a Hearse. So it could have been either a celebration of Life or a celebration of Death. Cadillac covered it all. Suicide doors might have even made it more interesting. I have only owned two Cadillac's. One was a 1957 Coupe Deville Gold Edition. And a 1963 Sedan Deville. The 1957 was my favorite. But there are quite a few different versions of cars in the Cadillac lineup. If you were willing to pay, Cadillac would provide.
Really rare vehicle Lou. Nice to see such beauties❤️👍 Likely the same chassis and body as the hearse used. Different finish remember he said the car was pulled off the assembly line. So a hearse would finish being built by a hearse builder, the ambulance by an ambulance builder and chances are this was done by the ambulance company as a special 3 car run.
Um, no, Broadmoor is outside of Colorado Springs, not Denver. As bit of trivia for Perry Mason fans, the " Perry Mason: The Case of the Sinister Spirit (TV Movie)" was filmed at the Broadmoor Hotel. It's a beautiful old hotel.

Superior built the commercial part of the body as evidenced by the tag with 666 on it. Cadillac built it from the dash forward on an ambulance chassis.
Very neat! I believe these cars were also built into hearses and ambulances. I own a cadillac fleetwood hearse. A Federal coach. I think Superior coach made the skyview. Very beautiful car!
There's one of those little gray station wagons behind the Cadillac there's one in Lakeport Clearlake California in a single car garage Justice in California it's the very same car primer gray or maybe that's the paint no glass anywhere but it's the Nomad design a Corvette Station Wagon and this is no amateur-built this thing is seriously flawless

With a little research it would seem that the main body customisation beyond the more common 1959 Superior Cadillac ambulance would be confined to the roof and pillars being redesigned to give maximum window vantage which includes the spectacular glass top. Interesting to note the rear doors come both in normal and "suicide" configurations across variants of this Cadillac as an ambulance. Great video and channel.
Hi Rod C, Glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for sharing your knowledge. Appreciate your kind words about the Channel, it's very encouraging, Lou
Fascinating Lou...one thing that was striking to me besides no radio...is the crank windows...by '59 I believe most Caddys overwhelmingly had electric windows...again this may be related to the fact that it was based on the 'ambulance model'...because for sure, the drivers cockpit is very stripped down for a caddy!
One thing that surprised me was the very basic arm/elbow rests on the door. By '59 the regular Cadillacs had fancy elongated armrests. The ones on this vehicle look like something from the late 40s/early 50s. Also hand cranked windows were pretty rare on Caddys by 59
Hearses and ambulances very rarely had much in the way of options, I've never seen one with a Cadillac installed radio and very few with power windows, though I'm pretty sure they all got power brakes.
Generally the coach companies used Chevy parts to build their coaches. Cadillac didn't have much in the way of non power parts. Knowing this I was stumped with my 1967 Pontiac ambulance as it had small round tail lights. I couldn't think of a Chevy that had those. I then saw a Corvair drive past and thought, Aah, there it is.
Basically a standard Cadillac commercial chassis sent to Superior Coach Corp. and a modified hearse ambulance body with seating, skylights and deluxe trim installed to suit the hotels needs.

Hi JONNIE, Happy to read you enjoy this "Superb treat" :-) Lou
They were simply hotel workhorses to get patrons from the Colorado Springs airport to the Broadmoor Hotel . Thankful all six still survive. My dad drove Gray Line touring cars up Pikes Peak just before this era.

What a cool car. It's a little surprising to see such an impressive vehicle without air conditioning, but maybe the Broadmore hotel only used it in areas where AC would have been unnecessary. Either way, I'm sure trips in this care were unforgettable .

Happy to read you enjoy the styling on this one Robert :-) Not sure where the others are.

I honestly wish that the Ecto-1 was a Superior, even though Harold and Maude had probably bet them to it
What a minivan should be.

This car wasn't built at the Cadillac factory. It was built by Superior Coach Corp. on a Cadillac commercial chassis. The same chassis used to build hearses, ambulances, combinations and flower cars.

Hi WerksDesign, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
General Motors never built professional cars, just the chassis.
This unique 59 caddy base body styling is similar to the ambulance and hearse models.

Hi Hoodoo Man, Glad you enjoyed this one :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing details of your cars and adding to the story, Lou
Hi Trip Reviews, If this is a hearse, it has a view to heaven too :-) Lou
Lou Costabile yep! it would be, 😅. It’s really neat car! I do remember Cadillac ambulances and the Cadillac hearses too.
Um, no, Broadmoor is outside of Colorado Springs, not Denver. As bit of trivia for Perry Mason fans, the "

I started in fire rescue in a 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor ambulance, quite similar. Did Miller Meteor do any of the interior work?
Hi Tony, Not sure who did the interior. Maybe a Viewer can share knowledge, Lou

You have great attention to the details. Thank you for commenting, Lou
