Milhaud used to write shorter pieces than usual. No wonder if this concerto lasts only 13 minutes. It is still typical from a period and a style of the author, with acid harmonies and familiar sounding themes. However, the period of "le boeuf sur le toit" is about over. So, we have the feeling of some sort of transition period starting towards a more classical world. The beginning of the slow central movement is mysterious, but brings us quickly on a more familiar ground. The way how the piano is mrged with the various sonorities of the symphonic orchesrta - with the rather crude sonorities that Milhaud loved - and its perfect architecture make this concerto a masterwork. All in all, this concerto is a pure delight. The piano concertos to come will be a bit more ambitious.

Delightful music. I wish Milhaud's piano concertos would make occasional appearances at orchestral concerts.

I think this conceto is much better than most comments seem to suggest. A nice playful concerto- why does everything has to be forceful and powerful, or dramatic and tragic- we have enough of tbat in life. I love this comcerto's playfulnes intermixed with true French character. Wonderfully done by Milhaud.

Einfach atemberaubend!

This and no 2 are hugely entertaining the other 3 are more challenging for listenener and pianist and probably lacking really good material to make them interesting.

It's amazing how good this pianist makes this vulgar music sound...

There is a vulgarity (popular) in much of Milhaud's music, which he embraces.
