    This is one of the few games my dad used to play while i was growing up, i remember watching him play this, and he could sit played through the entire game at once.
    Since i didn't understand english by that time, i didn't understand a single thing happening on the screen.
    Fast Forward 18 years later, i really want to play the game, i have a couple of 1995 computers so running the game wouldn't be an issue.
    Thank you for an informal review.

    A loyal reboot of this game would be amazing. It is one of my favorite games regardless of the clunky UI and steep learning curve =)

    This game was just great and unique. God I liked to have that big fleet with Thrawn as Admiral, Pallaeon as Commander and Jerjerrod as General. I felt like I could take over the whole Alliance all by myself.

    This was the 2nd game I ever bought, once I saved up enough money. I remember how awesome it was back in the day, and this brought back good memories! You're totally right though, an HD remake with an improved UI and space battles and this would be another instant classic (and something the Star Wars universe really needs, as apparently they don't make good games for it anymore)

    Really good review, no loud and stupid mosh pit music covering up what you were saying and no senseless babbling to fill in the video. I had borrowed the game once for a week back in 99 and loved playing it. Been sort of searching for it on and off since then. Thanks again!

    The only major flaw in my opinion was the fact that sometimes you would seemingly conquer the entire galaxy but then would go on an endless chase for one of the main adversaries that you hadn't captured yet.

    Another big problems I had with this game not mentioned in the video:
    - Of course you can build the Death Star, which is cool, but it take an insane amount of time and almost half the Empire ressources that could be used to build more ships and troops...
    Also, the Death Star is too easy to destroy using X-wings (unless you built a Death Star Shield like the one on Endor) or sabotage with agents like Han Solo/ Chewie, etc...
    - A few times, I won as the Empire with only 3-4 Imperial Star Destroyers (You starts the game with none built, if I remember correctly)... We're a bit far from the thousands the Empire is supposed to have, according to the Star War lore...
    These and the infamous "Pause-Fast-Pause" explained in the video are the reasons I won't plays this game anymore, even if I have some good memories of it (Specific escape of prisonier heroes, Battles that was too close for comfort, etc...)
    If I want my strategic Star Wars fix, I'll play Empire at War (Forces of Corruption)...

    • @ZanathKariashi
      @ZanathKariashi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you have 2 Star Destroyers always, and occasionally roll up to 4, depending on which of the random planets you were assigned during set-up which increases your initial unit budget.
      That's why if you mess with the unit values in the editor, you start with a ridiculous amount of ships, since it rolls your starting units based a budget of your current income after planets are distributed.

    funny thing to do is accumulate fleets of hundreds of ships and thousands of fighters. I think the largest fleet I ever assembled in once location was 150 ships and 2000 tie fighter squadrons. I would just launch all the fighters like a plague of locusts that ate the enemy fleet.

    I used to play this on very short campaign (only capture Coruscant or the Rebel Base), trying to get it done as quickly as possible and naming my ships after the naming conventions from the movies. Like my first Calamari cruiser would be the Home One etc.
    I also got this game a couple of years after I first heard and read the Thrawn trilogy which gave many of the new characters so much more context.

    Playing it right now as I type, Vader just took out chewbacca and next captured Han in what I imagine to be in some Dramatic rage on Han's part. 30 days later Vader was in the same system as luke, so they fought and I caught him. Vader took luke to the Emperor for the Final Confrontation and Luke escaped while capturing Vader and the Emperor while on Coruscant and with the Imperial Fleet in Orbit. Karma's a bitch.

      +pcgheroes cool, I got the first four of them. Didn't realize the games were nearly 20 years old though :s
      Hopefully I can still enjoy them though, as I grew up playing spectrums and Commodores. Can you recommend which of the four would be the best to start with?..perhaps this one?

    • @PeterHope2
      @PeterHope2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +peter hope also (you probs already know, but just incase) the other bundle still available is really great. Two of the games, outlast, and never alone are fantastic games, and you get a 75% discount on the outbreak add on,...the whistleblower, which works out about one pound sixty👍🏻 there's also another game that I haven't played that comes with it that looks really fun. Some type of retro GTA style game, that has a lot of nostalgia in it from old titles 😀🕹

      +peter hope I only got the first four in the star wars one as well since I already own kotor. I pretty much just got them for X-wing vs Tie Fighter(since I remember having fun messing with that when I was younger) and of course a steam version of this game, SW Rebellion. The other two I haven't tried yet, so I can't comment on them.

    this game is avaliable on GOG, and that's great, because once you figure out its confusing menus (helps being fan of Firaxis and specially Paradox games to understand its mechanics) it holds up pretty well despite its age. It's a bit limited and repetitive compared to the best of the genre, but being an StarWars game makes it awesome. A must for fans of both, stategy games and StarWars.

    Busted out my CD after watching a lets play. I agree. Not sure if Hotkeys were even an idea yet, but they would have been great for the "stop-start" style of this game.
    To get it running on Windows 7 you will need both Windows Virtual PC and Virtual Windows XP. Both of which are free downloads for Win 7 users.
    For the Windows Virtual PC - www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3702
    For the Windows XP mode - www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002
    Edit: I notice that someone says the "Alt" and "+/-" keys are hotkeys for speed. Awesome find!
    Oh yeah. Be prepared for a tiny play-window. The game is like 640 x 480 max resolution.

    I played this a lot back on its release and while it does have quite a few good points, it also has a badly designed UI. You have to mirco-manage your resources, manufacturing, characters, etc. at each planet. There are no overall control panels for each aspect of the gameplay. Loved the use of the John Williams music and that there was no single 'frontline', as each planet can be attacked individually and that makes things very tense at times. The cut-scenes were excellent and it was of course 'Star Wars' which compensated for some limitations and flaws.

    • @NYG5
      @NYG5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's all easier to manage if you build up each planetary system to be rather self sufficient.
      Each planet with super high energy will just farm shipyards, construction, and barracks, with the rest just being refineries and mines. In the late game, you can just have systems devoted all to resources, and just park shield generators and cheap troops to delay enemy raiders until you can send reinforcements.

    Worst thing in the game was having a death star but no tie defenders yet, because a sole x-wing would come along and destroy that "ultimate battle station" like no big deal. there was no bloody way but having 13 tie defenders in the death star hangars to defend it.
    But the vast amount of lore alone was worth the money. Definitely would buy an hd remake with improved battle system and ui. but then again, today it would most likely be centered around all the wrong parts of the star wars universe.
    Thrawn was always my favourite btw. best commander and his diplomacy skills were only matched by Vader. Rebels had the stronger characters, but their much weaker ships always made the Empire the better choice.
    Man, I need to reinstall this game right away.

    • @NYG5
      @NYG5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you don't need TIE defenders to, uhh, defend it. You just needed enough deployed TIEs to match or outnumber the rebel fighters and prevent them from attacking the Death Star.
      So, if you just park 30 squadrons of TIEs on whatever planet you have the Death Star, they will automatically be deployed when the rebels enter the system, as opposed to being on the Death Star's hangar and having to launch one at a time when the fleet battle begins.
      TBH the Death Star is mostly a novelty. I prefer to just focus on fleets with a ratio of 6 frigates to escort one Star Destroyer, only deploying TIEs when the rebels have a significant force. Otherwise I save the TIE squadrons and let the escorts machine gun all the rebel fighters. Hate having to replace totally destroyed TIE squadrons.

    • @canuckster24
      @canuckster24 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To add to NYG5s comment, if you have a Death Star shield it can't be attacked, I only ever built Death Stars for the purpose of power projection, you gain a lot of support in all systems when building one, but lose a lot if used.

    Stated in 2013 ... before Star Wars and Lucasfilm got turned into a Mickey Mouse operation ...

    Hey PCG, you can speed up the time in multiplayer, but only the host can I think. I understand your complaints about the time system, but I respectfully disagree with them. I find the most annoying part of civ is having to click that next day button every 2 seconds. It makes it a game of just loading and waiting to press it again. In SWR, you can set everything up in very slow, then switch it to slow and keep an eye on things while keeping the game going at a reasonable pace.

    You can accelerate and decelerate time with ALT+ +/-, and you can pause with ALT+P.

      A lot of people don't realize the game even has hot-keys since they aren't mentioned anywhere in game, though the manual and read-me does explain them.

    • @TKnightcrawler
      @TKnightcrawler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZanathKariashi Yeah, they are in the documentation. The manual is such a beast, and that makes me happy. :-D That might have been the biggest manual I had for a video game.

    I would absolutely love if they would remake this game. As long as the requirements stay under 1ghz processor speed and 2gb of ram... (A remake that I can't even play? That would be even worse!)

    Sorry Michael, but EaW is nothing like Rebellion. Units build like an RTS (almost instantly compared to the months it would take in rebellion), ships have to travel along a linear line, artificial restrictions of troop strength on planets. It is not in the spirit of Rebellion at all.

    It's interesting how many people are getting mad at me for dissing the prequels. I wonder how many would get mad if I put the new trilogy(at least up to TLJ as the third movie isn't out yet at the time of this post) there instead. The prequels are trash but they are at least entertaining trash that didn't hurt the story as a whole and had well received spin offs(clone wars). The new movies however just totally screws the original main characters.

      The sequels are trash because they don't come from G lucas. The prequels are the story of G lucas. he actually imagined it before the OG trilogy, so no you can't shit on that... Good review of the game tho

    This was one of the best games of all time IMO. Sure, the graphics are crap compared to stuff now but the content, lore, and replay-ability exceed most games today. Now that Disney owns Star Wars, we will never see another game like this again.
