Part of me hoped the S-ending would have more, but I think it staying the same has helped me appreciate it more. I think it adds to the message/critique of the overall story more. Frank breaks down in the end. It's not that he can't escape the zombies. He has a tank, he's beaten a special ops soldier with his fists alone. But despite it all, he's surrounded by the mindless. He escapes, tells his story, but it's all swept away in the end. His scream isn't him accepting death. It's that despite all he went through, Brock was right. Nothing will change. Just like the zombies swarming him, people will continue to mindlessly consume in spite of everything he went through. It ends with him accepting that. He won, but in the end he may have well told his story to the husks around him. Nothing will change, the pain of the people of Willamette ultimately meant very little. The hell he went through for days will be a blip in a news cycle held up by endless miserable stories. All he can really do is scream out towards the sky in a vain attempt at having his voice heard.
