An SU type fuel pump should stop once the float bowls are full. The one on my Lotus Excel does. The fact that it's not, suggests that you might have leaking float needles and it's flooding, which the wet plug would seem to confirm. Whilst you might think that the choke would make it worse by adding more fuel, it also opens the throttle for fast idle and can help. Try turning the ignition on until the pump just starts to slow, then disconnect the pump and then try starting.
I agree with your assessment, I had this with my Mark 2. Replacing the float needles and seats in the SU carbs sorted it out. Also fit a good electronic ignition system, points and condenser don’t cut it these days.
I dont agree.i have more faith in good quality points and condensors than electronic ignition that can just fail for no apparent reason.have bin and still do usr points and condensor in my 68 s type jaguar, never had a problem yet,and they dont get changed for years at a time.
I’m 60 , have been a passenger in a p6 , 2 ltr , owned and driven a 2 ltr , but never been in or driven the v8 , version , thanks for the vid , and happy new yr mr and mrs furious , shane uk 🇬🇧
hey matt, make sure the dash pots are topped up with oil on top of each carb, otherwise it'll run extra lean as the needles will get stuck in the carbs which control the mixture.
Happy Christmas to you as well Matt. Furious Driving has been a must watch programme for me for many years now and I expect 2025 will be no different. I look forward to many more videos from you for many years to come.
Happy Christmas Matt. to you and the Furious family. Thanks for the last 12 mths. of entertainment. Saw the 740:featured on a recent Classic World video when it was at Radwood. 😊
Wishing you and your family a happy Christmas Matt. Thank you for all of your entertaining content this year, I’m looking forward to next years instalments❤.
That Rover is the gift that keeps on giving! Maybe you should just spray it bright red and put a Plymouth logo on it! I hope that the family Furious have a wonderful Christmas!
So glad you at least didn’t put too much effort and time into this Christmas video Matt 😂😂😂, were you one of those “ WISE MEN” everyone talks about at this time of year 🤣
First, a very Happy Christmas to you and yours. I think it's the carb dash pots, they might be empty, and V8's are a swine in the cold to start. My P6 V8 is like this, and 9/10 it's the dash pots. I top mine up with some auto fluid TQF. Any sluggishness at cold is the carbs unable to provide fuel. Top them up and see what happens.
Merry Christmas Matt, sounds like carb issues and the engine is flooding. Personally I'd put efi back on it but hopefully with nice holey or something like it should run perfectly
Matt I just had 123ignition fitted this year to the Capri , it’s outstanding and you can change the settings yourself on your phone or on a laptop. Worth looking at 👍 have a good xmas fella
Merry Christmas Matt and family, maybe you let the fuel run to low and you put fresh in and it just got through maybe, try filling the P6 up a bit more great video as usual cheers 👍.
It May just be the initial timing is off in relation to total timing EG. (10-12 Degrees of Initial timing 30-32 degrees of total timing with advance) causing hard starting. The American Kevin @ junkyard Digs has a video to show setting timing to tune a carb engine with mechanical advance, from a couple of years ago. very well presented and relatively easy to follow. He was a Helicopter tech in the services.
That sounds like a flooded engine. The SU pump should tick away until the float mechanism cuts off fuel to the bowls. That’s not happening and you are flooding the engine. Burlen Fuel Systems do the SU carb overhaul kits which include the upgraded needle and seat for the bowl in the carbs.
Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎅 🎄As a suggestion as to why it was a non starter it sounds like it was flooded as the plug was wet but it sounded strong once started . As you have free flowing air filters do you know what needles you have in the carbs . When I had my p6 3500S I had KN filters on the HIF6 carbs and changed the needles from BBG to BBW and it made a world of difference to throttle response and cold starting...Worth a look
Hi Matt I think it's fuel related in the SUs if they are not balanced that can make for difficult starting do you have a colour tune thats a good way to check and you can use a stethoscope to lisien to the vacuuum they should sound the same just a few points I have had many SUs come to me and the problem eas the balancing thans for the video best regards Andy Allen.
Happy Christmas to you 🎅. Yes, let's find out what perils we all fall into with you in 2025 👍. Like you, trouble finds me, no point in hiding, Let's all crack on with our various projects.
Merry Xmas to you and yours Matt. Suggestion? instead of you taking a holiday how about sending the P8 for one ? I don't have any patience any more but that thing is getting on my nerve. No not a mis print ,iv'e only got 1 left..🤓
Hi Matt, check out A C Dodd’s channel. He’s predominantly Minis, but also tunes V8’s (examples of which can be seen in his ‘on the road tuning with A C Dodd’ videos. I’m currently having a 1293 built at M L Motorsport in Higham and will be using an A C Dodd recurved distributor, high power ignition system, A C Dodd RS cam and one of his rebuilt & modified SU’s. The guy is an engine whisperer and you can learn a hell of a lot from his videos. He does tuning days at various locations (cheaper) and can also come to your home (more expensive). It’s not cheap, but he’ll wake your engine up and make it reliable.
this engine was first used in 1961 Buick Lesabre etc. and would be used until the mid 2000s along with its V6 derivatives such as the turbo v6 from the Buick GNX and later the turbo trans am 20th anniversary edition in 1989 my late maternal grandmother's used 1984 Buick Skylark Limited she had from 88-90 had a 2.8 L v6 version of the engine under hood
No. The aluminium 215/3500 V8 was ditched for a new thin-wall iron block V8, THAT was later modified as a compromised but very successful and long-lived V6.
Come on Matt, you’re a P6 guy. You actually answered the question in the video. The reserve tank setting. Although it’s 1 tank, the reserve switches to a lower pick up tube.
A fault with the valve that switches between main and reserve feeds? The slow constant ticking of the pump suggests an air leak into the fuel feed. It fired up on reserve. The float chambers filling and then running low.

The Rover neds a bloody good run to settle everything down. Merry Christmas Matt, and to all the subscribers.
You should start a new tradition. A Furious broadcast at 3pm every Christmas Day.

hey matt, make sure the dash pots are topped up with oil on top of each carb, otherwise it'll run extra lean as the needles will get stuck in the carbs which control the mixture.
Also only use atf in them. At least that's what I was told to use in my sd1.
@@stuarthall4777 i used rngine oil in a friends maestro, ran fine with that in it.
Happy Christmas to you as well Matt. Furious Driving has been a must watch programme for me for many years now and I expect 2025 will be no different. I look forward to many more videos from you for many years to come.

Put the timing light on it should start easier than that

I hope you have a great Christmas mate and a happy new year
Matt what that car needs is electronic engine management. Either that or a full carb rebuild
Its got in-distributor electronic ignition and the carbs have been rebuilt
Merry Christmas Mate! Have a good one!
Merry Christmas Matt, sounds like carb issues and the engine is flooding. Personally I'd put efi back on it but hopefully with nice holey or something like it should run perfectly
Merry Christmas Matt 🎄 🤶 All the best for 2025 😊 👍
Merry Xmas to u and Mrs.Furious.😊
Merry Christmas Matt, yea we been with you since 2018/19 i think, watch all your videos,
Perhaps a colortune will check mixture settings of carbs?
Merry Christmas Matt.
Matt I just had 123ignition fitted this year to the Capri , it’s outstanding and you can change the settings yourself on your phone or on a laptop. Worth looking at 👍 have a good xmas fella
Thank goodness I’ve only got a Kei truck, I’ve only got a little bit more room than you have. Have a nice Xmas Mate.
Merry Christmas Matt
Happy Christmas to you and your family.
Oh Sleaze... What have you done to make it jealous??
Merry Christmas to you and the family Matt.
Merry Christmas Matt 🎄🎉
A better Carburettor setup is going be a good start to tuning. I wonder if it was flooding.
Merry Christmas ,Matt.
Happy hols Matt , look forward too next years Vids .👍
The P6B "from the Exorcist "😅
Merry Christmas Matt, looks like more "Beast" activities in 2025.
Merry Christmas Matt and family, maybe you let the fuel run to low and you put fresh in and it just got through maybe, try filling the P6 up a bit more great video as usual cheers 👍.

Spark plugs could be dirty and need a quick clean up.
With constant cold starts, short running etc.
Probably just needs a good run and clear out
Merry Christmas Furious and all the best for 2025, from the BGT, Bucharest.
Merry Christmas!
Happy Christmas Matt! Thank you for a year of compulsive viewing... (ClickBait is great too!)
Merry vmas one and all.

Merry Christmas to you from west Midlands allsorts car club
Merry Christmas
Flooded? My 440 Jensen did that until I got the knack of how to start it.
Merry Xmas to you and yours Matt. Suggestion? instead of you taking a holiday how about sending the P8 for one ? I don't have any patience any more but that thing is getting on my nerve. No not a mis print ,iv'e only got 1 left..🤓
needs using to identify issues...any areas nearby that you can use it off road? ie tracks airfields...
Have a merry christmas Mat
I used to floor the throttle on crank if i had not run my p6 for a while or had run it out of fuel... it may help ?
Next year maybe retrofit fuel injection from a later mk1 rangerover it would transform it .
Maybe a long shot but could it be a faulty gearbox switch? The car thinking it's in gear? Happy Christmas Matt 😊👍🏻
Thats already been bypassed, for that exact reason!
Have you got any in line spark tester lamps
Is the ignitionswitch on the back of the key "tube" okey, bad connectors might not let the ignition work, but the starter runs? Merry christmas!
Did u use the tea shelf?
Merry Christmas Matt wishing you a great 2025 and will the Rover make it to the NEC in march if you guys do it
Possessed by the Christmas spirit? Or rather, its malevolent brother from another universe, and you can tell its that one because its got a goatee?
Same to you Matt!

but the plug was already wet so Im not sure. I think its just being difficult
@@furiousdrivingfuel quantity/pressure. If it’s low, might not be pulling enough from the upper pick up. Enough to wet the plugs, but not to run
👌👌👌👌
You need to change its name to 'Christine'!
😊👍
Why can I only watch this wuth Italian dubbing? I didn't even know it was multi-lingual.
I think I'd get much pleasure selling this car..... it doesn't like you and causes you much grief. 😁👍🇮🇪
Get rid, you have others.
Get this car a 123Ignition. Alternatively get rid because it clearly doesn’t like you.
