Don't forget Elton John wrote all the music, Bernie Taupin wrote all the lyrics. Taupin was from the rural county of Lincolnshire, and lived on a farm where his father worked, near the small town of Market Rasen. The lyrics of the song are said to be an homage to Taupin's teenage years, and what it could be like on a Saturday night in Market Rasen, which was full of hard drinking farm labourers who liked to have a good drink the night before their day off (most would work 6 days a week). Elton never had a hard drinking night in Market Rasen, he was from the London suburb of Pinner, Middlesex. Market Rasen is about 20 miles from where I grew up.
Move there, open the pub, and start the rumors. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story...just start with " some say Sir Elton..." 🤣 and retire rich!
Elton said on Parkinson Show that the song was inspired by the antics of the local lads in the Northwood Hills Hotel on edge of west London where young Elton was resident piano player.
I was blown away when I saw Elton on a interview & they asked how long it took him to write the music for Bernie's lyrics. He said sometimes an hour, but most of them closer to 30 minutes. Are you kidding me?! Talk about gifted.
Firstly, I don't give a rats what Brad thinks about these Classic tunes. Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road was a masterpiece double album from the mid-'70s. You should listen to the whole thing from start to finish sometime. Disco was only a thing in the bigger cities at that point and most young people were still listening to rock 'n roll. Elton John was still in the closet, albeit a flamboyant dresser. It was a great time to be young!
Elton’s hardest rocker, but the guitar work on Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding still gives me chills. This album is filled with moments like that. This album is arguably Elton’s best work. The whole thing is 🔥
@@crazyjacobins305 LOVE that song! I just read what it was about and now I love it even more. It's pretty deep. I cannot believe that I never knew it was about Lennon.
Listening to it now. It has always choked me up because I can feel the emotion in it and now it's bringing a tear to my eyes knowing what it was about.
'My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys and my old lady she don't care. My sister looks cute in her braces and boots, a handful of grease in her hair' great lyrics in this song.
Saw him just a couple of weeks ago on his farewell tour with 40,000 others, all bopping along to this and many other ancient classics. And still with Nigel Olsen on drums and Davy Johnson on guitar as featured on the album from all those years ago.
Love Elton. Brad always looks confused when listening to rock. Lex is like the cutest muppet of all time , head always bopping back and forth to the music. Do Border Song by Elton , or Levon.
'I'm a juvenile product of the working class, who's best friend's close to the bottom of a glass' What a line. This album is a masterpiece. Bennie & The Jets was on the same album. Also Candle In The Wind. Check out Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
This is called Rock-n-roll kids. It's an ill-faded genre of music that started in the 50s and flamed out during the early 2000s. When you grew up with it, you just expected stuff like this. We were never disappointed! So much great music. The bands in those days actually played instruments, not samples like today. So there you have it. Nothing to get all concerned about. No need to start a channel so you can make money off of it. This is coming from an old man who now says, "You kids get off my lawn"! "Shakes his fist at the sky like you used to do"!, (lyric from Slow Waters. Another fantastic song from Elton)
Elton John was in the stratosphere when this album hit. Saw him 5 times. He ages like a fine wine. Love him since I was 14 in 1972. He's the soundtrack to my life. Love my Elton.✌🌻🌻
The band tracked this live, Elton hollering and running around the studio. All in one take. Elton put the piano on later in the overdub sessions. Unusual for them to do it that way.
I always like the reactions and somehow I miss this one since I've been along for most of the ride, but now it really strikes me how well the color matching goes. It's all just so cool. The echo from the light blue Brad above down through the turquoise hair pieces that lead on down to the mostly turquoise shirt. And just all the contrasting colors it's really beautiful. But it's funny to think of you guys a year ago, this was so fun to watch.
Takes me back to 1974 when my mother came home with Elton John’s Greatest Hits. This is still one of my favorite Elton songs as it’s it’s one of his few rockers.
This was my "waiting for the radio station to play" song when I did my high school homework. It's also the hardest rock song Elton John ever released. Great choice!!
This is a classic album, not a bad song on it. I got this from the Columbia Record & Tape club, 13 for a penny. I read that they recorded this real quick also.
I love their juxtaposition. She looks like the human embodiment of joy, flowing with the music like a leaf on a summer breeze. And he looks like he is on the verge of code breaking the song’s hidden depths
This is a rock and roll ANTHEM! It's all about the weekend and the party. In verse 2, he says, "A couple of the sounds that I really like are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike. I'm a juvenile product of the working class, whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass", with a drunk dad and a mom who's checked out and doesn't care what her kids do. He's looking for some action, a good time with his best buds, mixing it up to forget about the horrible dysfunction at home and his M-F life. It's soooo politically incorrect for today, where "violence is never the answer." But he says he's thinking of shouting at some random dude at the bar, "She's with me!" just to try to get a reaction from him. So much pent up teen angst and frustration that has to find a way out or he will explode. It's at the very heart and the spirit of Rock and Roll. The incredible energy of this song performed live, with that guitar, and Elton POUNDING on the keys and those drums and that rock and roll bass line is a thing of joy to behold. th-cam.com/video/W_0pekDunZY/w-d-xo.html and then 42 YEARS LATER in 2016, he's still got it. th-cam.com/video/eBe9e1gqwHM/w-d-xo.html Not since Jerry Lee Lewis... and maybe never again. He beat that piano to a pulp.
It has been supposed that Bernie Taupins lyrics are a throwback to his younger days (well what he used to see in those days). Elton and he wanted to do "an American rock song set in England". There was speculation that it was kind of taking a shot at the Stones song Street Fighting Man.
I saw Elton John at least six times, maybe more. I saw him at Madison Square Garden in 1976 for the Yellow Brick Road tour and he was AMAZING....they opened with Funeral for a friend/Love lies bleeding......goosebumps chills you name it. He is beyond compare as one of the best rockers/writers/performers of all time
@james boström”… BUT NOT QUITE AS PRETTY”…. Saw it at Rich Stadium in Buffalo. They opened with Grow Some Funk Of Your Own and featured Kenny Paserelli on Bass, Roger Pope on Drums and both Dave’s Johnstone and Caleb Quaye on guitars James Newton Howard on Keys and Ray Cooper on percussion. Rock Of the Westies was the current album. I was in 7th grade and talked my parents into taking me. What an AMAZING show !
@james boström I did see the yellowbrick when road tour in John Lennon came on stage. I was and it was at the Garden in Ny. Thanks for correcting my memory from so long ago
OMG LOL I borrowed my dad’s car, I actually had permission lol, a 65 Chrysler New Yorker with a huge engine and I drove it at 120 mph on the highway between Canmore and Calgary listening to this song over and over lol. Thank God there was almost no traffic and I didn’t hurt anybody. It felt like fun at the time - after 20 years working at emergency I’m so grateful for that pure luck. Great song. Amazing album!

One of the greatest albums ever put out. Besides this song, includes "Good-Bye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle In The Wind", "Bennie And The Jets", "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "Harmony", "All The Girls Love Alice", etc. And I would disagree with Brad on not needing a lyric video for Elton John. I think you almost always do. Examples on this album alone would be "Good-bye Yellow Brick Road", "Bennie And The Jets", "Saturday Nights Alright For Fighting".
This whole album has to be played at the highest volume. I have a distinct memory of my uncle and his high school buddy (standing in their 70s era tube socks and short shorts in the 90s!) shaking the walls of the family outing, testing out the new home stereo and speakers. Great album!
Lex: If you're going to keep "Air Guitarting" Left hand higher Right hand more animated Take of those head phones Bang your head! Let your beautiful flocks flow! Love the show!
Cool thing - you guys contrasted this stylistically with 'Bennie and The Jets' but they were both on the SAME ALBUM - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Really shows how versatile he was early on, before he lost his edge and became just a pop balladeer in the 80s. Another great reacton!
I remember sitting in my room playing this album or the greatest hits album and singing to it, think it was my olders brothers, I was always in his records, LOL great album we had fun just listening to music by ourselves , great times
If you'd like a treat check out the live version of this performed at the London Conservatory of Music. Elton, his band, a 90 piece orchestra, and a choir. It is mesmerizing. Hell, check out the whole show if you have the time.
I can’t imagine this song with a choir and orchestra. Some things just don’t go together. Sounds like sardines, Champagne, and oranges. But I’ll withhold judgement until I see it.
Great reaction! Funny that most things lead back to some Canadian connection as Elton John’s husband/partner is from Toronto, lol. Keep up the awesome job Brad and Lex! Cheers.
Huh? Just played my “Good Bye, Yellow Brick Road” LP version & it sounds the same. I agree with you. Reactors shouldn’t ruin a first listen on a live version (sometimes live 40 years after release).
Lyrics for the song: It's getting late, have you seen my mates? Ma, tell me when the boys get here It's seven o'clock and I wanna rock Wanna get a belly full of beer My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys And my old lady, she don't care My sister looks cute in her braces and boots A handful of grease in her hair Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation We had it with your discipline Oh, Saturday night's alright for fighting Get a little action in Get about as oiled as a diesel train Gonna set this dance alight 'Cause Saturday night's the night I like Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh Well, they're packed pretty tight in here tonight I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right I may use a little muscle to get what I need I may sink a little drink and shout out, "She's with me!" A couple of the sounds that I really like Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike I'm a juvenile product of the working class Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation We had it with your discipline Saturday night's alright for fighting Get a little action in Get about as oiled as a diesel train Gonna set this dance alight 'Cause Saturday night's the night I like Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation We had it with your discipline 'Cause Saturday night's alright for fighting Get a little action in Get about as oiled as a diesel train Gonna set this dance alight 'Cause Saturday night's the night I like Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright, whoo
Our cover band would change the lyrics a bit. Instead of "a handful of grease in her hair." We'd say "a mouthful of greens in her hand" (Greens are Dexedrine for the uninitiated). Then where says "I'm a juvenile product of the working class, whose best friend floats in the bottom of his glass." We said "I'm a juvenile product, born full-on throttle, whose best friend floats in the bottom of a bottle." We did more of a Flotsam and Jetsam cover than EJ.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was a double album containing many genere's of pop/rock from the mid 70's. There's even a homage to "At The Hop" (Your Sister Can't Twist But She Can Rock 'n Roll) And a country-influenced song (Social Disease). This song was the album's rocker. Hilariously, the one song the left off the album (but later included as a B-side) was called Screw You.
I was 20 when EJ smashed this out in '73....imagine...Traditional British 'spit & sawdust' Pubs and working class Lads determined to have a great.. nite...🇬🇧😄
Elton John’s music was constantly evolving. Listen to Friends, I Feel Like the Bullet in the Gun of Robert Ford, Funeral for a Friend, very different from Philadelphia Freedom and Crocodile Rock.
As with all of Elton John's music of this era, the lyrics came from Bernie Taupin. The album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is one of the best albums of the seventies...
A great song from one of the greatest albums of all time! the greatest album of the '70s for sure. You guys need to check out his version of the who's pinball wizard
Lex shows good intuition as usual. Yes, Elton is affecting a persona, i.e. a rowdy adolescent whose booze-and-barfights lifestyle on a typical Saturday night in the slums of his English town is depicted. As Elton says, he's a "juvenile product of the working-class/whose best friend's floating in the bottom of a glass." Therefore, he's singing like a teenager bursting with adrenaline and a desire for mayhem.
Elton bossing that piano, love the part with the guitar, swear it sounds like a horse galloping,..to me,..love it,..Elton performed Philadelphia Freedom on Soul Train,..David Bowie also had been on there, I mean good music is loved by all, when good music, good music, can't be denied,..loved your reaction, Godspeed, Peace ✌

Elton said on Parkinson Show that the song was inspired by the antics of the local lads in the Northwood Hills Hotel on edge of west London where young Elton was resident piano player.
Thanks for that clarity - all these decades I figured it was East End London toughs.
Yawn

'Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting' jumps out of the speakers and hits you in the face.
Yes, the lyrics are incredible and paint a brilliant picture for the listener and the Guitar work is phenomenal, however, what I found to be the most valuable aspect was & still is the Drumming.
The strategic inserting of the Snare fills and the opening & closing of the High Hat still impresses me 49 years on. ( I became a professional Drummer )
This is a kick arse Rocker of a song from one of the best song writing teams of all time.
The Lead Guitar work in the Outro is mind blowing and intense, plus Elton is pounding his Piano.
I cannot omit the fact that Elton's vocals are very powerful on this song and it was in the days when he could still hit the high notes.
It's a shame that after Elton's throat operation in the mid-80's his voice was never as good.
From start to finish, this is a rip snorter and a ball tearer of a song.
The Record Producer - Gus Dudgeon is a major reason for the songs' legendary sound and status in the history of music.
I put this song in my Top 100 of all time and that's a mean feat due to the thousands of songs vying for a place.

Lex is jamming! I love it, her joy is infectious! Brad is just trying to figure out what the Rocket Man is saying. 🤪 Fun video!
My mom use to listen to Elton John and Elvis.
Elton John has so much talent just the range of music he is a legend
One word. Masterpiece.
huh huhh!... i love the way she giggles ,she so cute.smile an" all.
This music is called ''rock n' roll''. Pure and classic rock n' roll.
Great ol' rockin' song: 'Stay With Me' - Faces (with Rod Stewart) studio version. Include the lyrics - great stuff
This whole album has to be played at the highest volume. I have a distinct memory of my uncle and his high school buddy (standing in their 70s era tube socks and short shorts in the 90s!) shaking the walls of the family outing, testing out the new home stereo and speakers. Great album!
Love Elton! Been putting out hits for decades!! Thanks to him for so many years of great music!! 🎶🎵🎶
Big surprise, I bet. Elton could rock. First reaction ever seen. This album was his pinnacle
Nice! next: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"...you guys will love that one!!
Lex:
If you're going to keep "Air Guitarting"
Left hand higher
Right hand more animated
Take of those head phones
Bang your head!
Amazing track. The best is infectious with fantastic lyrics…worth the look.
This is straight up rocknroll party song. Beach Party, keg party, house party, parking lot party, block party
Love this song. My fav. from EJ
There is a lil Rock-n-Roll in everybody
Great reaction! Funny that most things lead back to some Canadian connection as Elton John’s husband/partner is from Toronto, lol. Keep up the awesome job Brad and Lex! Cheers.
saw him in the 70s, it was a golden era of rock and roll
1975 St Paul MN one of the 5 greatest concerts of over 200 I've seen
This version, to me is my favorite Elton song of all time! Put this in the Pantheon along side of Black Dog and Mississippi Queen!
And here I am singing all the words off by heart. LOL.
Good version! 👍 (Elton John's music is so intricate, that I think it's best to stick to the studio versions to really appreciate them!)
Huh? Just played my “Good Bye, Yellow Brick Road” LP version & it sounds the same. I agree with you. Reactors shouldn’t ruin a first listen on a live version (sometimes live 40 years after release).
Elton sang this song in Liverpool a few weeks ago, and still smashed it, still amazing and it's his farewell tour...hope not
Lyrics for the song:
It's getting late, have you seen my mates?
Ma, tell me when the boys get here
It's seven o'clock and I wanna rock
Wanna get a belly full of beer
My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys
And my old lady, she don't care
My sister looks cute in her braces and boots
A handful of grease in her hair
Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Oh, Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh
Well, they're packed pretty tight in here tonight
I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right
I may use a little muscle to get what I need
I may sink a little drink and shout out, "She's with me!"
A couple of the sounds that I really like
Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike
I'm a juvenile product of the working class
Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass
Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh
Oh, don't give us none of your aggravation
We had it with your discipline
'Cause Saturday night's alright for fighting
Get a little action in
Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set this dance alight
'Cause Saturday night's the night I like
Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooh
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday!
Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright, whoo
...........thanks......
Probably one of the "heaviest" songs Elton & Bernie has ever written. Rock on!
There are some great videos of Elton doing this live, try the 1980 one in Central Park, great performance.
I was too young to "go out" when this song came out, but I sure danced around the living room to it.
Hands down, best Elton John song. It's a top song of the seventies.
Your Song.
Just as with "Birthday" by McCartney, Elton staked his claim with this song: nobody can rock harder than me.
I was 20 when EJ smashed this out in '73....imagine...Traditional British 'spit & sawdust' Pubs and working class Lads determined to have a great.. nite...🇬🇧😄
"Saturday, Saturday, Saturday. Saturday, Saturday, Saturday. Saturday, Saturday, Saturday." Amazing Lyrics.
Right up there with "Wop bop a loo bop, ba lop bam boom" Pure genius.
This was before disco, I believe. Or at the very beginning. It's a rocking happy tune.
Elton John’s music was constantly evolving. Listen to Friends, I Feel Like the Bullet in the Gun of Robert Ford, Funeral for a Friend, very different from Philadelphia Freedom and Crocodile Rock.
Lex has such a infectious smile listening to the tunes.
This is a singin', guitarin', keyin' drummin', bassin', high & hard ass rock song.....yee haaa!!
Great song with a “I’m cuttin loose on the weekend” feel.
The roots of punk rock; for sure!!!♥︎
This has been called the greatest "Pop" album.
FINALLY!!! Someone reacted to this AWESOME song👍🏼😎
Elton is another icon of music. The guy has SO many great songs.
Not too shabby for 49 years old. Elton had a great band.
You might like the song "Empty Garden" which was written for his friend the late John Lennon
YAY! Best EJ Song ever. The only one I listen to. Good Job.
Brad & Lex, you'll love his "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Crocodile Rock" !!!!
This album hit #1 in 1973
His best album for sure
Elton bossing that piano, love the part with the guitar, swear it sounds like a horse galloping,..to me,..love it,..Elton performed Philadelphia Freedom on Soul Train,..David Bowie also had been on there, I mean good music is loved by all, when good music, good music, can't be denied,..loved your reaction, Godspeed, Peace ✌
