My mate (Donald Simpson) and me are the two lumps at the end of the runway taking about 7 reels of 36 exposure film on a zenith EM slr, the feeling was epic when '319' flew just over our heads, the soud, smell, heat and windrush were fantastic
A few months ago, I was walking from Hylton Castle to Hylton Redhouse and I heard a loud aircraft engine. I looked up to see a Vulcan flying overhead. An old man was watching the plane circling the NELSAM (North East Land Sea and Air Museum) and I said, "Hope he's not hoping to land, he's about 32 years too late." Turns out, it wasn't a lost bomber or time travel, it was a flyby of the last airworthy Vulcan on a tour of the country. Quite spectacular sight.
Hiya, just to let you know I'm the little lad with the white and blue stripe t-cozzy hat at the young age of two, being held by my father, Richard Moore. Cheers, Phil Moore.
I was at that display only twelve years old, I have never heard noise as loud in my life, Me and my mate threw ourselves to the ground on the first pass of the runway. Can't believe this video is on here 👍
I was 9 at the time of this and watched it from the hill at town end farm : ) At the top next to the pylon and the old gun turret/ air raid shelter thing that used to be there ahhh those where the days i also saw this plane in an air show from the same place i think it was the year before this i remember feeling the engines resinate through my chest i'd never seen anything like it at the time and i thought it was the coolest thing ever : )
I worked at Hylton Castle Library when the Vulcan was landed at Sunderland Airport. I remember the whole building shaking as it went over. Everyone ran outside to watch Amazing sight. Was lucky enough to go inside at at the airport museum.
The only 2 days I ever played the wagg was to see the Ark Royal being launched and the other was the see the Vulcan land at Sunderland and 40yrs later it was still better than double french or history.
I was in Castle View school the day this machine flew over the houses to land. If I'd known, I'd have "dolled off" to go & watch it! Damn shame that airfield closed, I used to love going up there at the weekend, watching the parachutist sand even the models they used to fly on the south side. ..but I suppose you can't complain about the jobs Nissan created on the site.
I have fond memories of the airshows at Sunderland airport. My farther alan dart worked a lot in and around the airport (atc worked in the vampire static display) amazing memories
For those wondering about the fate of XL319, it's at the Sunderland aircraft museum and has been painted on one side. You can sometimes sit in the cockpit and it's awesome but so small there's no room to swing a cat! You might get in if you're lucky! :-)
Yeah, she's doing better than ever, apart from the end of the tail section that got ripped off when she tipped over in the winter. I wouldn't say the inside is that cramped, you can fit about 4 or 5 adults in there. 6 months ago, we got the No.4 Engine running and I believe there is a brand spanking new No.2 Engine, she's bound to have the odd bit of damage and missing part due to her age, but she's coming along great.
Class! i used to see it everytime my bus (the Go-ahead northern 551) went to south shields and i always wanted to go see it. but my mam/dad would always postpone taking me :-(
I think that they were blow accross the runway/taxi strip. They had been warned not to get too clsoe to the back of the aircraft as it would run off fuel to save having to pump it all out. I think they thought it had shut down, but it spooled up again. This is the ITV news report, the BBC one was a bit shorter because of it (i think!)
I saw this Vulcan at The museum and its in really bad condition at the moment. My Grandad has worked on this plane many times and we were both shocked to see how bad condition its in.
Its where the Nissan car plant now stands, apparently the police got a bit upset when this beast landed due to the risk of lorries being overturned on the A19.
I always wanted to see this, because I wasn't there on the day - thanks. By the way any other makems remember the name of He-Man's girly partner? It was She-Ra, later to become the idol of all the thick geordies who gave money away to Freddie & co.
all I'm getting is a black screen with the sound playing. possible corrupted file? I can see the thumbnail in the scrub bar if I'm dragging it along, but it doesn't play the video.

Awesome to see the Vulcan again, she's still looking good and I remember when I saw it was supposed to land they couldn't do it because of the wind !
Far from rotting away, 319 is undergoing restoration.

I have just heard that the Vulcan actually blew a BBC Camera man across the A19.
I always wanted to see this, because I wasn't there on the day - thanks.

Why don't you come and see it at the North East Aircraft Museum , you'll not be able to go in it as the door is broken.

Why the sped-up footage? Looked like a Benny Hill sketch.
