    I feel like, in a weird way, Akira won the battle.
    Ryo threatens Akira that if he doesnt join him, he'll kill him. And Akira said he'll "drag him to hell with him".
    Welp, Ryo is all alone, and killed the *only* person he really cared about. And then got rekt by the "Heaven Nuke".
    And it's gonna keep happening :)

    One thing to note about pacing, I believe it was stated in an interview that pacing towards the end was intentional and a representation of how quickly social media can spread and escalate panic situations. Our ability to communicate in this generation is much greater than when the series was originally written for better or worse

    • @WaruiDeshou
      @WaruiDeshou  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That makes total sense, and I felt that connection and intention while watching. Rather than that stuff, I was speaking mainly about the final confrontation with humanity. There are characters and processes and settings that get a mere handful of seconds onscreen, and the battle itself could have been drawn out a bit. I do appreciate that this would've marred the tight focus of this Devilman story, though.

      It was Ryos plan all along to basically end the world so demons/devils could thrive again without humans.
      And he wanted Akira there with him, so that's why he turned him into a devilman.
      But his plan backfired for several reasons, and ended up accidentally severing Akira in half.
      And idk if this is the first run through in the time loop, im thinking the story takes place in the second loop, but God has basically damned Ryo/Satan to kill his friend/love interest for eternity

  • @Glassandcandy

    Also that match cut of young Akira handing the baton to Ryo paired with the shot of devilman punching Satan through the ice is brilliant visual storytelling. It suggest that even in this final moment, Akira is desperately trying to teach Ryo about empathy and compassion. Even in this violent way, he isn’t just trying to get revenge, he’s trying to get *through* to Ryo. One last, seemingly futile time. The love these two opposites have for each other is staggering. Even after everything has happened, Akira still sees the potential for good in Ryo, and he’s desperately trying to reach in and grab it. It’s somewhat tragic that Akira never gets to know that it actually worked. Since it requires his death he never actually saw Satan cry. He never saw that he made the devil experience love (love itself, theologically speaking, being an expression of God). He, in a sense, redeemed the devil himself through his martyrdom- something thought impossible. Brilliant and beautiful stuff

    Um, you say it's not fair to compare it to a shounen, but it's totally fair.
    Devilman the 1972 manga which Crybaby adapts, is a shounen. It ran in Weekly Shounen Magazine with other shounen titles like Ashita no Joe and Cyborg 009.

    • @WaruiDeshou
      @WaruiDeshou  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @devilmaniac8386
      @devilmaniac8386 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The added sex made it adult, but the violence was already present. We're in a society where seeing demons and people being ripped apart is totally fine and not disgusting, but think of the children should they see a titty or see people engage in the act of reproduction.

    • @WaruiDeshou
      @WaruiDeshou  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I take your point, but, to be fair, Crybaby isn't exactly awash in loving and mutually caring acts of reproduction. Most if not all of the sex is actually sexual assault and/or rape, so I don't think it'd be that hyper-sensitive or hypocritical for someone to say "nah, this one is a little much for my kids." Hell, the violence alone would make such a move understandable, IMO.
      I've never read the manga, but being familiar with Go Nagai's works I can imagine how violent it is. And, as I said, you're right that I should have remembered that when I spoke about the fairness of the comparison.

    • @devilmaniac8386
      @devilmaniac8386 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was violent, but because it was in a shounen manga, his editor steered him away from going too controversial. Crybaby in part kinda fulfills what Nagai wanted to do with his manga.
      He wrote and drew an autobiographical called Gekiman years ago (Still ongoing) where he explains how he came up with Devilman. Particularly this summary (Geki is his name in this fictional version of himself) says a lot :
      To this end, Geki tried to implement elements such as Soviet Russia and its weapons but was told by his editor to leave them subtle but contemporary. Events that the manga reflected included the Gulf War and the sarin attack on the Tokyo subway (comparing it to the Jinmen event) that were decades before their time. Some elements while already controversial in the then more controlled Weekly Shonen Magazine had to be removed including a highly gruesome death and a rape scene during the fight with Sirene. The final chapter mentions that the decision of a handsome young man as the hero was by the editorial department which was stated to be part of the reason that fans were able to follow the story for so long. However because of this, Geki created the related character of Violence Jack as a more literal personification of a 'Devil Man' as a metaphor that the story of Devilman was completed.

    My problem with the ending was never that it was a sad ending. It's just that it felt rushed, the reveal of Ryo as Lucifer/Satan was handled much smoother and smarter in the manga, than in this readoption. You kinda slowly realized who he really was thought hints and foreshadowing, it was very cleverly done.
    The whole war too, it lasted for ca 20 years, but in the anime it felt like 2 hours. So the way they showed time passing, the resistance of the last of humanity and the devilmen, was not optimal and was honestly the biggest disappointment for me. I loved everything else about the readaption, but the last episode fell flat.

      I take more issue with how Ryo's character has been changed into being a heartless, almost completely irredeemable monster. In the manga he was actually a sympathetic character, but here the series wrote as the guy everyone is supposed to hate. Why should we feel bad for him when he's getting what he deserves.

    It’s such a shame that we’ll never get an ending to Berserk, but the more I think about it the more I come to a conclusion that if we were to get one it would be similar to this. It’s extremely obvious to anyone familiar with both series that Guts and Griffiths relationship is heavily influenced by Akira and Asuka/Ryo. Not even just the love aspect but even things as basic as their character design and personalities. They’re both very, very similar in key ways (but still unique enough to feel like their own thing).
    Griffith would ultimately “win” against Guts in the military sense- he would get to keep his kingdom and his subjects and his legacy, but he would lose Guts and the only love and empathy he had ever truly felt in his life, the only one to make him forget about his dream and love life how it was in the present, and he would forever regret the decisions he made. He gained a Kingdom but lost his world so to speak. Just as Ryo reclaimed the world but lost the one thing that made living in it worthwhile to him. It’s a victory through tragedy- the ultimate Pyrrhic victory
