Cheers to Ali for joining! Was rather trippy having the legendary BBC interviewer stroll into the studio having watched him interview living legends for many years now. From an emotional interview with Harrison Ford and a hilarious meme filled chat with Tom Cruise, to joking about with Zendaya and Emma Stone, you can watch Ali over on BBC Radio 1: th-cam.com/video/oA1d_VZ5XQc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fkyng4W0vHueeATn
Poor Pete. Chris has replaced him with another bearded, bespectacled Brit. Pete is sitting in his vintage Japanese taxi, crying over a picture of Chris.
9:10 This is actually true. The main rotor will continue to spin as you descend, creating a bunch of drag and slowing you down. You won't be able to control direction if the whole thing fails but if it is just the motor then there is a good chance that even that will still work. It is the same principle as Maple Seeds (Whirligig)
Love Ali's interviews. I genuinely think he's one of the best movie stars interviewer there is and I am very happy to see him featured in one of my favourite TH-camr's video ! Great job Chris !
I used to drive a taxi in Helsinki. The Japanese sometimes asked what do Finns know about Japan. So then I listed every thing I knew about Japan. Loads of Japanese ski jumpers...
This past April I did pretty much the same route. Hiked the Nakasendo starting in Magome with stops at Tsumago, Kiso-Fukashima, and ending in Narai. Got rained on my way up to the Naria Torii pass and dealt with some snow, but it did add to the scenery. Tsumago is a beautiful preserved town. Had a great time at this is Izakaya called Chikara in Fukushima that's ran by a mother and son. The mother loved having English speakers as guests even though she didn't speak much English. Had a jolly time speaking with some people from Ireland. Matsumoto City was probably the biggest surprise for me. All I knew was that I had to catch a bus from there to go to Takayama. Ended up spending the afternoon there. The view of the Japan Alps from inside the station was beautiful. The castle was surprising enjoyable. I just really loved the vibe of the city. I really want to go back and hike one of the near by mountains and enjoy one of the onsen towns in the area. Also the drive from Kanazawa to Kyoto was fun too with a couple stops at mountain temples in Fukui.
I lived in the UK for a short period of time and when I told someone that I was from Hungary, they always started listing things they knew about Hungary. Puskás, Gulyás, Orbán Viktor, Balaton, and that lovely bread you have with the thick crust :D So, yeah, you do do that as well.
Regarding the helicopter thing.... It's called autorotate. If the motor stops, and the chopper starts moving downward, the downward momentum will start the blades rotating on their own. Hence, auto rotate. Landing will be a Tiny bit bumpy, but yeah, chopper will head downward and, like one of those flippy little seed thingies, it'll sort of float to the ground. Not QUITE float, but yeah, you'll walk away from it just fine.
As for the Bamboo forest, skip it! Take the backside of Mt. Inari instead and you'll experience a proper bamboo forest with lots of old (almost ruined) shrines and temple grounds
See you for your reasoning of why Shogun should have a season 2. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would, but thought it ended perfectly. Would I love a second season? Yeah. I don't think a second season would make sense or add anything to the first.
It sounds like it won't be the case, but I REALLY want to hear Chris talk about the masters of Japanese cinema Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi. I'd love for them to get even deeper into the weeds too, but that's a lot to ask for.
There was this show on discovery ages ago called seconds from disaster (I think that's where I saw it on at least) and they actually showed a helicopter where the pilot just turned off the engine mid-air and it gently lowered to the ground. He could still steer it and everything.
Absolutely loving this guest episode. I dont want to talk doom and gloom, but lately the podcast have been boring. I would love it very much if Chris does more guest episode starring people from all walk of life in Japan
Are there 2 Chrises?! Chris & younger brother Chris?! Coughy phlegmy Chris & clear throated Chris?! Normal Chris & Younger Chris?! Dadbod Chris & hot fit Chris!?
Me and my kiddos, ages 24, 22 and 20 went last spring and climbing to the monkey park I was struggling. I had to stop several times only to be surpassed by a pregnant woman and a woman in her 70's....the amount of shame I still feel is embarrassing. The monkeys are definitely worth it however! It is 100% the nicest culture....we did Disneysea and I cannot ever do the American parks again, it ruined me! lol
Speaking of crossovers, I was watching a Londoners’ vlog and they caught Abroad in Japan in the window in the Waterstone’s at Hampstead th-cam.com/video/40iSmE3gsHE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8ctkjvxT0UVP7nzB (12:40 mark) 😮
If you haven't already and need a good show, Arthdal Chronicles ❤❤ SOOOO good. First season most of all, second season is still beautifully done but I didn't enjoy storyline as much, even tho it was deeper and still well done.
This is the best podcast in the past 5 years, Chris, you finally talk about Japan instead of Pete not being able to start his car in London. 😀 Please invite more guests like Ali.
Was in Japan 2 weeks ago and have to say the same thing: Osaka was pretty disappointing after all the other cities and I had not enough time in Kyoto Kyoto was soo full, and half of the people were kids in school uniform, that was so interesting Getting into Arashiyama Bamboo Forest was way more congested than the Dotombori Bridge
I've been to Japan 4 times now, every time solo travelling. It is the best place on earth to solo travel from all the places I've visited. Things are tailored to single persons. Unlike it's neighbour where eating out on your own in some places is not possible, would simply be refused single person or have to buy 2 persons portions. (things are getting better there but it was my experience only recently)
Also splurged on the Park Hyatt for a night on my visit last year. Definitively a 5 star experience. Was disappointed though that the New York Bar doesn't actually have a bar, there is a long table that they filmed just on the one side like it was a bar. Beautiful view at night though.
Helicopters can glide... they do a dive into the wind so the blades spin up really fast then use the stored energy to stay up, its no glider but safer then it looks🚁
That list matches our experience. I needed two wallets, one of them is still full of yen coins. Mountains for us also seem to mean rain, Hakone, Nikko, Shirakawago and Takayama all very wet. Still magic, and did make Onsen and just baths in a machiya very rewarding. I loved sitting in the outside hot spring watching the trees gently sway in the wind as clouds drifted by with the sound of a river below.
I would love interviews with the likes if Ian Rudd, Paul Ballard etc - the behind the scenes people in the AIJ universe - I bet they have some great stories!

Matsumoto castle still has its original main buildings. Only the daimyo residence part was burnt down.
Poor Pete. Chris has replaced him with another bearded, bespectacled Brit.
Pete is sitting in his vintage Japanese taxi, crying over a picture of Chris.
ha ha-mainstream-chris will be hosting a japanese music/film programme soon
With dog food in his pocket
Already heard the audio version. Wanted to comment that despite knowing absolutely nothing about Ali I really enjoyed him as a guest.
holy crap, i love Ali Plumb's interviews
me, toooo
I don't know who to be more jealous of, Ali or Chris. Dang it.
This is a great team up. I love that in this timeline you two have hung out.
OMG I wasn't expecting this awesome crossover 😮👍
Welcome to the worlds most thoughtful and entertaining film interviewer !!
He is rather good!

Whaaaaat this is amazing

Looking forward to Ali's Ryokan discovery series: Plumbing Across Japan 🥲
Underrated pun
I used to drive a taxi in Helsinki. The Japanese sometimes asked what do Finns know about Japan. So then I listed every thing I knew about Japan. Loads of Japanese ski jumpers...
This was masterfully presented and narrated my friend! Outstanding episode 👏👏
38:30 I love the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy radio show. It's such a charming gem ❤

Me: "Wow, Pete looks different today"
Not that different!

The lesson to take away here is to not eat cheese in portions that can be defined as a 'formidable wad'.
As for the Bamboo forest, skip it!
Take the backside of Mt. Inari instead and you'll experience a proper bamboo forest with lots of old (almost ruined) shrines and temple grounds
ラーメン、早く食べないとのびちゃうぞ!
Ramen gets soggy ![

I like the Park Hyatt because it's such a distinictive building - it helped me get back to my hotel when I got lost in Tokyo.
Solo in Japan is great! I'm about to go on my fourth trip in a week, solo. North to Fukushima prefecture in Aizuwakamatsu 👍
I went to magome-juku on my trip to japan and it was one of the highlights of my trip.
They replaced Chris and Ali with robots. We demand the echoey cut.
It sounds like it won't be the case, but I REALLY want to hear Chris talk about the masters of Japanese cinema Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi. I'd love for them to get even deeper into the weeds too, but that's a lot to ask for.
Awesome job chris with the podcast
Yay! My favorite BBC guy!! His interviews are so well done and enjoyable.😁

Plumb in japan.. that has a ring to It. As well as a lot of connotations.

But the question is, was the blue cheese worth it? I have a feeling it was, you'll come back around eventually
If you haven't already and need a good show, Arthdal Chronicles ❤❤ SOOOO good. First season most of all, second season is still beautifully done but I didn't enjoy storyline as much, even tho it was deeper and still well done.
Whoever torched Matsumoto''s "Original Castle" needs to make up some very bad Karma.
I thought I clicked on the wrong video and half expected Hiroyuki Sanada to walk in.
What a pleasant conversation. Can't wait for part 2. Thank you guys!
This is the best podcast in the past 5 years, Chris, you finally talk about Japan instead of Pete not being able to start his car in London. 😀 Please invite more guests like Ali.
Wow after listening to this podcast since 2019 I never thought you'd have a guest like this on, how cool!
I think I've seen this guy talking about radiohead musical with baz luhrmann on yt just couple of days ago🤨
Was in Japan 2 weeks ago and have to say the same thing: Osaka was pretty disappointing after all the other cities and I had not enough time in Kyoto

Did anyone else think they'd done a split screen until they started putting elbows across the boundary? Just me? OK.
Oh dang! Normally I dislike interviewers, but with Ali I even watch interviews with celebrity's I've never heard of!
Jaws and Jurassic Park are both Steven Spielberg movies 💀
I'm not saying English words with a Japanese accent, I'm "talking in Katakana".

What a random Collab! I love Ali's interviews. Always great questions and likeable.
Amazing episode! Thank you both. Looking forward to the next part!
Holy shit the crossover I never thought would happen, but am not really all that surprised it did happen
I doing this journey right now! Everything they are saying is 💯 accurate
I just got my tickets for star wars celebration and am now planning my first trip to japan

*I am joking btw*
This is a truly great collaboration.
My mate got through the pillar. I chose not to because the hole was only slightly bigger than my leg lol
A crossover I did not expect.😮
holy f that's one highly unexpected collab
Famous female film directors anyone?

maybe you have a penicillin allergy with the blue cheese i do and cant eat it
The collaboration I never knew I wanted to see
That list matches our experience.

If you see vegetables, eat them 😂
Can't wait for the talk about Shogun
Imagine a colossal collaboration between Chris, Ali, and Pete Donaldson! It'd break the internet. Please make it happen Chris!
My absolute favorite TH-camr and absolute favorite interview host in one show? AMAZING
Ali is my favorite interviewer, sitting alongside my favorite youtube creator. This was fantastic! Thank you for sharing your adventure with us!
Uuuhu...it finally happened!
OMG ALI
Personally, i disliked Kyoto. I will return there next year with some friends and see if it can make the bad impression up.
Bababababam! Just when I need ya most
34:30 35:37
Mr. Plumb would be pretty high on my list of all the people I love listening to that I'd never expect to see on this channel.
Great vid!
It's that one guy
Dynamic Duo for sure, crazy you know each other but brilliant
Really enjoyed that!
Ept

That was a pleasant surprise. He's so delightful.
Nice! And Pete is getting a nice break to catch-up on some sleep
Let's goo
Cheers! That's great for Chris's channel!
Fun stories. Also is it in Brit's genes to deliberately pronounce everything as wrong as possible?
YES FINALLY!!! Someone other than Pete! (nothing against Pete) Would be so good if you have regular different guests on the podcast please!
I would love interviews with the likes if Ian Rudd, Paul Ballard etc - the behind the scenes people in the AIJ universe - I bet they have some great stories!
@@Stephen-up3sd absolutely that would be very cool.
