Very nice to see handcrafted items. To me they are better quality than machine made items. And I just like the fact that a person took the time to create something nice. Thanks for sharing your works and skills.
Just recently started watching this channel as I've become quite enamoured with traditional wooden and woven crafts over the many years time. We used to have a hand-made basket maker here some years ago, but it became very commercial, catering to the decorative set with too many pounds on their pocketbooks. Thrilled with your reliance on traditional tools and well tested methods. Lovely baskets my friends. Can't say I've seen a more well crafted example made since the 19th century. Thanks for your talents and time.
Beautiful! I wish I could try my hand at it. I have woven reed baskets before. My first go at it was a double-walled Cherokee basket. My instructor was amazed at the result. I'm pretty sure my ancestors were skilled craftspeople. It's in my veins. 😁
I can imagine the shop smells heavenly with shavings falling away. There are such steady hands working but precise measurements and knowledge of this basket by these extremely Skilled Artisans. If I would be given one of these beautiful Trug Baskets as a gift by my Family it would truly be such a treasure. 💝 I first heard about the Trug Basket on The Big Flower Fight, a Father Son team from Wales were competing and were making one. An oversized one that was representative of a “throne” and it would hold a variety of vegetables as they would gather around a massive table set for a King and his Court.
Do we Brits complain when coving gets called "crown molding" or skirting gets called "base board" or work top "counter top" (what do the septics count in the kitchen anyway). What about "bathrooms" without a bath or "wallboard" (we call it plasterboard) fitted to the ceiling? The misspelling of words like: programme, disc, metre, litre and aluminium. Also, a ladies handbag is not a purse - a purse is usually found in a ladies handbag. As a Brit I've known what a Sussex Trug is for as long as I can remember and if this video has enabled you to educate yourself a little then it can't be a bad thing. BTW thanks for the chuckle (or should it be chuckel).
Thank you for sharing you craft. I would love one, Unfortunately I live in the United States. If you can ship them, please let me know. Again thank you for sharing.
I liked the knife used to shape the wood and foot operated wooden clap to hold the same. I learnt a word for the basket made out of wood. In India baboo used to make baskets in variety of shapes.
I can only stare at the shavings on the floor lol. I would be the local begging to haul off your scraps. I need that stuff for my fireplace. I’m forever looking for stuff to start it myself. I even save toilet paper rolls and fill them with dryer lint. We burn every day from December through at least the first of March...and then a little before Dec or after March. I would legit store that stuff in prime barn space like it was gold!
What is the average retail price of trugs? If you make 3 per hour and make £20 profit, after overheads, on each one, you're on over £2000 per week. Not bad for a cottage industry. Interesting video.
Two real craftsmen here folks Trugs , I gather , may be used for measuring volume & maybe weight of products to be sold at markets? Anyone know for certain ? It’s a blessing to realize your God-given talents while you have time left in your life to put them to good use.
@ Major General Robert Clive your comment should be the number one comment in this feed. As an American judging by the image for the video, I had feeling it was a basket. But from a cultural standpoint I thoroughly appreciated all the polite passive aggressiveness. It was as though you were saying we don't complain like Americans, we just appreciate the fact that it is what it is. Although as far as baskets go...how well do these hold up over time?
They will last for decades. And Dominic, who has a workshop close to mine, is a master at making willow baskets, hurdles and sculptures too. He's also a fantastic teacher!
Ma Belle .. a “drawknife” or “draw-knife”. Used for centuries to shape, carve & plane any wood type to size. Come in several sizes up to about 2 ft. for full width logs, used for log cabin building. And down to pencil shaping size , 2 inches. Also handy for leather crafting but the handles are turned up 45-90 degrees which facilitates ‘pushing’ away opposed to ‘drawing’ or pulling towards the user. I hope this helps Ma ? Uncle Fudd
you're lucky, the Chestnut blight over here in the US destroyed almost all the Chestnut trees and now they only exist in a very few select locations for whatever reason they didn't succumb to it or it's not able to survive in the areas they still grow.
Could have started with the finished product first - we've all seen one but didn't know the name! Those awkward horrid things that sit on a shelf because they're poor for carrying things in that our grandparents always had! :P
Totally frustrating video. The camera spends most of the time with close-up of the peoples heads. You can hear them working and doing things with their hands but you don’t get to see it.
This was a video from 9 years ago, we are now under a new direction and I hope you'll agree that we have drastically modernised our approach to video making!
How to make drugs? Really? Oh, wait...it's "trugs"! Alrighty, then... Made from sweet chestnuts and white willow... Do you smoke it, snort it, or inject it? I didn't watch the video to find out...
Roxanne Rolls ... Not so Ma’am. You must know how to use/operate the power tool in order accomplish your preferred outcome. Try it once? Ya just might’ve missed your true calling ⁉️ Enjoy, uncle Fudd

Always a pleasure to watch traditional craftsmen.

Aahhhh, so THAT is a trug. It's nice to learn something new here in California. BTW, that's some nice bass playing at the end of the video.
brought one from here about 15 years ago. Still going strong and used regularly. A god send in the garden
Thank you, that is so cool . its wonderful to see traditional methods still being passed on.
Love that foot clamp!!! Has given me an idea for thining guitar sides.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Great to see old methods still apply. Thanks
Like the old hand rolled tobacco tins for the pins, good traditional workshop long may it be so.
I haven't seen a hand-rolled tobacco tin.
Kevin Winn tobacco tins are very useful in the workshop.
I bet it smells wonderful in that workshop with all of the shavings, a lovely video, thank you.

I had fun trying to figure out what a trug was :) thank you.
Amazing, hope you guys are still making these. //ji. John in Oregon
Skip to 12 minutes to see wtf a trug is. Then watch it all.
Oscar Weasley thank you
Oscar Weasley Lol that part
it would be nice to have that in the title "wooden basket"
I agree it would have been nice to have introduced a finished trug at the start. i had to google it.

very interesting ,I didn't know what a trug was . thank you for your video
Impressive edge on that draw knife!
This is your brain. This is your brain on trugs!
Haha! Hugs not trugs!
Boo, hiss.
I didn’t even know what a trug was and accidentally typed it and well thank you now I know 😂
So that's how they do it. Good work! Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Very enjoyable and informative video.

fantastic,so well done. cheers
Me parece un producto artesano muy bonito y autentico
I would love to learn how to do this.
I love to watch craftsmen work
I can only stare at the shavings on the floor lol.

Get a draw knife then you can make all you want.
Do you sell these by mail order??
When do you cut the willow and the chestnut for your raw material, in the spring or?

thats the first ive seen a trug ,,,, think ive been out with a few , so had to skip to the end to check lol
very interesting though
fabulous! thank you for so kindly sharing. be well. bye now
Obviously it is more important to hear the commentry and see his face than see what he is doing.
HA!
This was pretty neat!
👍..love it
came to see what a trug was, now I know
Whoa! Let's start off by googleing it.
There used to be a guy outside with his shaving horse for many years
whats the tool being used to shave the wood with two handles called?
Ma Belle Draw knife

I like the look on employees faces when I ask for a trug, they think it has a sexual connotation, then I explain it's a handbasket.☺
Where can I get one in the states?
They ship to the US www.sussextrugs.com/product-category/canada-usa/
Trugging hell this is a lot of work for a basket.
it would be nice if after all that they would have shown assembling the whole thing...
OH! A basket w handle
you're lucky, the Chestnut blight over here in the US destroyed almost all the Chestnut trees and now they only exist in a very few select locations for whatever reason they didn't succumb to it or it's not able to survive in the areas they still grow.
Where can I buy one
Clay Guinard I think these are the same company and they ship worldwide www.sussextrugs.com
Awesome, would like to see more instruction than yapping though !!
Had no Idea what a trug was now I do!
10/4
Trug Life !
All I saw was the man talking. Would have been nice to actually see the work he was doing. Maybe next time.
Oh. What didn’t you just say it’s a half bushel basket?
First question. WTF is a trug?
makes one think they seem clinker built , like a nors long boat ,
No sound?
HerSTmonceux Truggery
Good title... I had to find out what a trug is.
Well I read the title wrong...im here for drugs
Ahhh... that would be mind bending, this here is wood bending.
Same here. I spelled drugs wrong in Google...
This Shop could only exist in the UK
Most people who clicked on this link thought it said "Drugs"
Hello
Hi
It tells you what a trug is at 18 seconds, not 12 minutes. Pay attention.😎
Misclicked, its about Trugs.
Came here to find out what’s the best ratio of fentanyl to marijuana and became a trug addict instead.
me shouldn't have gone to specsavers, me thought that read how ro make drugs
Sorry, I didn't read correctly. Not the video I expected 😁
Considering the title I think a trug is watching the lips move on someone talking. Need to get a new director.
Oh a basket !
Could have started with the finished product first - we've all seen one but didn't know the name! Those awkward horrid things that sit on a shelf because they're poor for carrying things in that our grandparents always had! :P
For god sake mean it’s a basket LOL
turn sound off ... then skip all none product parts ... makes for a good 2 minuter video...
Totally frustrating video. The camera spends most of the time with close-up of the peoples heads. You can hear them working and doing things with their hands but you don’t get to see it.
I want to shave a horse
Its clearly a basket case!
I want to see up close what your hands are doing.First part of video WS see nothing but your face
Stay in school don't do trugs...
I thought it said drugs...
Terrible camera work showing the taking head and not the craftsman's hands and technique!
This was a video from 9 years ago, we are now under a new direction and I hope you'll agree that we have drastically modernised our approach to video making!
I must register my disappointment of this video, i came here to learn how to make a illegal substance only to find a man making wooden baskets.
emmm i see
How to make drugs?
Really?
Oh, wait...it's "trugs"!
Alrighty, then...
Made from sweet chestnuts and white willow...
Do you smoke it, snort it, or inject it?
I didn't watch the video to find out...
You mean you didn’t know what a trug was, oh dear education was wasted on you. Lol
Its a freaking basket .
DON"T DO TRUGS! Just say no.
Dude, anybody can make anything with all those power tools! And then you sit there with a hand tool like you've been doing that all along. really?
Roxanne Rolls ... Not so Ma’am. You must know how to use/operate the power tool in order accomplish your preferred outcome. Try it once? Ya just might’ve missed your true calling ⁉️ Enjoy, uncle Fudd
