We had the good fortune to meet Brendan Fraser at Fan Expo in Toronto. My mother told him about her back surgery, because she has the same type injuries that he does. He was very moved and actually teared up. He gave her a hug, held her hands, and thanked her for coming to visit him. He's not just a great actor, but more importantly, he's a good man who genuinely loves his fans.
Was it 2019? It has grown to a genuine regret that I didn't consider meeting him, even though I met Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Peter Capaldi, Sean Astin, John Travolta, Edward James Olmos, Sean Young, waved at Jeff Goldblum, and hugged Cory Feldman for all the shit he has gone through. Oh, I remember Ke Huy Quan at that same event promoting the Goonies, as if missing Brendan then sucks hard looking back. Next time they're on tour, I shall be meeting both gentlemen.

It was a great convention and I desperately wanted to meet Travolta and Goldblum but they were there on the Sunday and I could only attend on the Saturday. I might add that I am extremely jealous that you met Travolta and Goldblum. Extremely jealous. Like really extremely jealous. However, thanks for giving Cory Feldman a hug. He needs to know how much his fans love him and support him.
See I grew up with a dad who was 800 pounds. His life, particularly his impending death, was an imminent and ever present conversation and topic in my childhood. I'll never forget being brought into a doctors office so the doctor could tell me and my sister, in front of my dad, that he would never live to see us graduate high school let alone have kids (and he didn't). We werent allowed to talk about his weight because it made him upset or embarassed him. Now I wish we had. When I seen trailers for this movie I was nervous. It was such a good movie, despite me having to pause to cry every few minutes because it reminded me soo much of things I had forgotten from my childhood. Fatphobia does not exist. Just people who care enough to WANT to see you live longer and those who don't want to hear it so they label it as something in an attempt to shut you up.
Having had to deal with it in both father and husband, I completely agree. Doesn't mean it will work, however, as I tried an intervention recently with a cousin who is now no longer speaking to me. I couldn't live with the PTSD, so it's probably just as well. There's nothing worse than watching a loved one destroy themselves and they won't listen to you or anyone.

I got a lifelong friend whose over 400 lbs. Tried for years to help him lose it and get into more than tv and TikTok. He won’t live long enough to see his kids drive their first car. Got to a point where I had to cut him out of my life. There’s only so much you can do.

There’s not an actor alive more deserving of a comeback than Brendan Fraser. It’s wonderful seeing him back on the big screen getting recognized for the amazing talent he is.

"I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life!" That moment in the trailer is what sold me on seeing it and throughout the whole movie Brendan made me cry with the raw emotion he brought to the role.
That perhaps is the most poignant part. About life and what we feel it’s worth, especially our own. And what this character goes through to validate his own life in his dying days.

I watched this film on streaming, not in a theater (which I partially regret) but man that line was one of those that just sucked every ounce of air out it was so…raw. He earned the fuck out of that Oscar.
What was most compelling to me was watching these 5 actors just pour their heart and soul into this movie. Its really all set in just one room. No distractions, just raw emotions from the actors.
Personally thought the movie sucked and I was pretty much bored of it after an hour. Each to their own but after *The Last of Us* review from drinker, I'm not sure his recommendations are worth anything but a pinch of salt
The best part of this movie is the fact that it didn't rely on CGI, it didn't rely on the most famous actors in social media, nor did it focus on political drama. This movie was amazing because of the writing and because talented actors, who understood the character's pain. The casting director was spot on and the director played his cards perfectly. Hats off to this film indeed.
If you've ever had a chance to hear Brendan speak off-camera, you realize quick how intelligent and insightful he is. He really is a rare breed in Hollywood, he genuinely cares about other people.

The saddest part about this movie is that it's implied if Charlie had met Ellie sooner, she would have saved him, and he would have been the supportive guardian she was sorely missing in her life. It's a story about regret and hindsight and is definitely a cautionary tale to take action and to not let your problems fester under the rug before it's too late.
This movie inspired my brother to fix his relationship with food, start working out, and commit to losing weight. Any movie that can do that for someone deserves a 10/10.
The film doesn't say "fat is disgusting", it says "addiction can be disgusting", which I think what those who rail against it are really railing against. The fact that a movie so daringly shows that when you choose to succumb to your addictions, they will destroy you. Those who relish in their addictions hate being faced with that truth.
I agree with you and even if the movie said that obesity is unhealthy. That would have been completely fine by me. I think that almost every other movie about someone obese that came out recently is more about how they are good the way they are, this of course is not true. Obesity is not fun and can be really damaging to a person and since I have dealt with this problem too. I don't see a problem in this movie portraying it that way. Also if the people on twitter actually bothered to watch the movie, they would find out that the movie is about much more than "fat guy unhealthy".
Well, to be fair, his own daughter is disgusted by his apperance, although in her case there is a lot more to it. But every first reaction to Charlie's appearance is negative, like when he turns on his webcam or goes out of the door to have a look at the pizza delivery driver. So, i see where those comments come from. That ofc doesn't change the fact that those people are absolute lunatics and their agenda is trash. This whole fat-acceptance thing is gross and pisses me off - and i'm saying this as someone whome it definitely couldn't hurt to lose some weight. But as the drinker said, it's not really about obesity in the end and it's not even about being gross, it's about the self-inflicted destruction, so there absolutely is no blanket statement about fat people here -> In Charlie's case, his obesity is killing him, a huge part of it being because he refuses any kind of treatment, so why isn't this a blanket statement about people refusing treatment ? I pity people with such one-dimensional thinking... It's a good movie, i'm probably not as ecstatic about it as a lot of other people seem to be, but it definitely wasn't a waste of time.
It doesn't have to say it when it shows it so clearly. This is why I say I am pro fat shaming. Literally nobody with bad habits has ever improved themselves without feeling at least a little ashamed of themselves first. Emotions serve a purpose, especially negative ones, and people would be a lot healthier if they could understand why they feel how they feel and listen to their emotions.
I hate how people see the film as fat phobia. It's not about finding Charlie disgusting. It's about finding sympathy for what he has physically become and finding the drive to cheer for his last shot at redemption.

The scene with Charlie and his ex wife was simply phenomenal. Just 10 minutes of amazing actors acting. You think his ex wife is some alcoholic bitch up to this point, but you see that’s she actually extremely sympathetic towards Charlie and still has some love for him. You see that she genuinely tried to be a good mother but has completely lost hope in her daughter. Charlie’s unwavering optimism despite his condition is so inspiring and beautiful. And I know this moment has been talked about to death, but the line “I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life.” Is delivered with such raw pain and desperation by Fraser, it just broke me instantly. That Oscar was so well deserved
Obese people have been furious about this movie because "it's paints being 'big' in a negative light." The thing is... It IS negative to be 500 lbs. I struggled with obesity when I was a teenager. I came out the other side of it but ONLY I could change. I didn't shout down films or people that may mention the word 'fat' within 50 yards of me. It was a beautiful film and I am glad Fraiser made it back.
When I saw the backlash from groups criticizing Brendan for wearing a fat suit and calling it "appropriation" I was baffled. Brendan is a heavy guy who struggles with his weight who took measures to make himself look bigger for the part. My response to those critical of him was "Fine, remain miserable and angry about everything for the rest of your lives ya twats. It's the same crowd that that got angry when Brian Cranston played a quadriplegic. Pathetic activists.

This was Brendan’s single best performance. It was both grotesque and beautiful. I literally teared up during it and I haven’t done that in a very long time.
This movie hit home really hard for me. I relate to Charlie so much; for him it is food, for me it's been on and off with alcohol. When you get stuck, it is really hard to get unstuck, willingly consuming the very thing that is slowly killing you, even when you know it is a brutal thing to live with. To anyone out there struggling with any sort of addictive lifestyle, I feel your pain and I hope it gets better for all of us.

You would expect him, if he were normal, to cut it out. Presently he is hit again and this time has a fractured skull. Within a week after leaving the hospital a fast-moving trolley car breaks his arm. He tells you he has decided to stop jay-walking for good, but in a few weeks he breaks both legs. On through the years this conduct continues, accompanied by his continual promises to be careful or to keep off the streets altogether. Finally, he can no longer work, his wife gets a divorce and he is held up to ridicule. He tries every known means to get the jaywalking idea out of his head. He shuts himself up in an asylum, hoping to mend his ways. But the day he comes out he races in front of a fire engine, which breaks his back. Such a man would be crazy, wouldn't he? You may think our illustration is too ridiculous. But is it? We, who have been through the wringer, have to admit if we substituted alcoholism for jay-walking, the illustration would fit exactly. However intelligent we may have been in other respects, where alcohol has been involved, we have been strangely insane. It's strong language but isn't it true? Some of you are thinking: "Yes, what you tell is true, but it doesn't fully apply. We admit we have some of these symptoms, but we have not gone to the extremes you fellows did, nor are we likely to, for we understand ourselves so well after what you have told us that such things cannot happen again. We have not lost everything in life through drinking and we certainly do not intend to. Thanks for the information." That may be true of certain nonalcoholic people who, though drinking foolishly and heavily at the present time, are able to stop or moderate, because their brains and bodies have not been damaged as ours were. Saw this one in theaters back in December with a friend who also isn’t exactly the thinnest fellow. Even he was disgusted at the eating bits and said he almost broke down. After that, he actually started controlling what he ate.
There was a teenager around my old hometown who would eat constantly. Didn't know what was going on in his personal life, but I heard his family was negligent. The last time i saw him was on a bus, wheezing and looking severely depressed. A couple weeks later, he passed away in his sleep at 17. My younger sister would chat to him during high school and really impacted her. The Whale reminded me of that addiction and how it can impact someone's life.
I'm so glad i cannot even drink more than 2 days straight. By the 3rd day it just comes straight out where it came in if i had the willpower to even try in the first place.
As someone who struggles with their weight I watched the Whale not knowing exactly what to expect and I was left captivated, deeply saddened and in tears at parts. It makes you reflect on your life, the mistakes and what do we hold most dear. I could see aspects of myself in the performance and it opens your eyes. An amazing performance and a well deserved win.
Fuck just listening to the drinker and seeing those clips throughout the video just made me feel sad just watching the struggle portrayed, fuck I need to go reflect on my choices.
I have a friend who worked on DOOM PATROL, and they have always said that he is a genuinely lovely, nice and fun person. Coming from a cynic like her, that is genuinely high praise. She couldn’t speak more highly of him. I very happy for the guy that he’s doing so well. It’s about time.
I used to be 400 lbs, so this movie kind of hit close to home for me. I was never immobile, but I definitely related to the binge eating, and like Fraser's character, a lot of my eating was due to emotional reasons. Overeating is an addiction, no different than someone shooting up heroin on the streets, and The Whale captured that better than any movie I've seen. EDIT: I never expected so many replies, but in case anyone was curious, I did lose the weight and got down to 200 lbs. Basically, the only way to get through it is to change your mental outlook on food. Instead of viewing food as some type of reward or emotional pick-me-up, view it strictly as a a source of energy. Instead of viewing ice cream as a tasty treat, view it as cold poison that will ruin your insides. It may sound extreme, but it works.
Too bad you couldn't go back and do it NOW INSTEAD! It must have sucked in the past when the ONLY choices were like Pizza or Chinse. While NOW you can get ALMOST ANYTHING delivered! It's like 'Housebound Haven' these days, where you can get nearly ANY food item delivered right to your door within an hour. And have nearly any desired PRODUCT dropped off within 10 feet of your couch in 2 days or less! Like I wish I could be an alcoholic NOW instead of back in my 20s! It sucked having to actually VISIT the 'The Brewers Retail' when I ran out of 'stubbies', but now they'll happily bring along a SIX-PACK when you order any food!
I get you. I never became obese thank god. Just overweight. But as a teen I WAS an emotional eater. And I am never going to deny that at all. I was fat as a kid, in my teens, and early twenties. Because I was comfort eating. I was depressed and I ate really bad crap to distract me from my emotions. And of course the horrible irony is that these crap food MAKES people depressed, and then you eat more to escape the depression, and the food makes you more depressed, and it's just a spiral going down. It's horrible how this addiction and these kinds of food has just become so accepted in our modern society. Sure you can eat a whole bag of chips a day! That's just not normal! ..... no... No it's not. That's pure starch and seed oil right in your gullet with no nutritional value at all. It's poison.
My father died abruptly of complications from obesity when I was 19. Growing up, he was so damn affectionate and wanting to be involved in my life hut, I was embarrassed of him and disgusted by his gut. In the end, he died before I could ask his forgiveness and before I could let him impart the meaning of being a man. Part of me still hates him but, it's because his actions stole our time and I can never get that back. Cherish your parents while they yet breathe, and learn as much as you can from them; they're not immortal.

I expressed _that_ bit about my father because I felt it conveyed the importance of cherishing family before they're gone and simultaneously the shamefulness of obesity given its consequences for one's self and others. I would say Fraser’s comeback is well deserved. His story is inspiring because it shows that as much crap as life can throw at you, you can still find success if you work hard at your craft.

Brendan is one of my favourites - old school male lead in The Mummy and Journey to the Centre of the Earth, funny and cute in George of the Jungle, he’s just adorable. The way he got screwed over by Hollywood was a disgrace
The mummy is based. Classic strong male protagonist who's brave, competent, skilled, and funny. Paired with an equally competent and great female protagonist.
I never knew he went throught all of this hell... I would think for years why is this guy vanished ? Why is he not the cream of the crop of the A-listers ? He has everything! And now he is finally back with a huge statement !
the eating, the p*rn, and the affair all seem to interconnect in hedonism, charlie living all for just what feels good and euphoric. THAT is what ruined his life, and THAT is what makes it such a cautionary tale. you don’t only have to struggle with binge eating in particular to shudder at the thought of what your compulsions could do to you, your body, your loved ones, and your whole life.
I don't see it about hedonism at all! I see it as someone who lived his life for others because he didn't feel worthy of being able to live for himself. If you remember his marriage wasn't a happy one. He finally decides to do something that makes himself happy (the relationship with the student) but after 4 years the love of his life ends his own life because of the treatment from his family. Charlie feels responsible for that as well. So Charlie took a chance on allowing himself to be happy and that turned to crap so he is carrying the grief of also knowing that he's just a miserable as he would have been if he stayed in his marriage but at least then the people around him would have been happier (note I'm not saying happy, just happier than they are) so why did he even try to be happy himself?? His old belief that he didn't deserve to be happy proved itself to be true in his eyes so he carries the guilt of everyone else's pain as well. In order to cope, he eats. The only coping mechanism that won't pain anyone else (at least in his mind) and only hurts himself, who he feels deserves it anyways.
Sadie Sink was great as well, she was extremely hurt but managed to make her character sympathetic. She has proven herself to be a brilliant actress recently with this and Stranger Things 4.
Brendan Fraser 100% earned his Oscar for this movie. Rarely do I see true commitment to a role like this; and he nails it right on the head. I second the recommendation for anyone who hasn't seen this emotional masterpiece.
I would, but I don't think I have the emotional willpower to even go halfway through the film after hearing people say it's sad, and with the fact I cried at the end of Diary of a Wimpy kid the long haul

I honestly forgot about Brendan Fraser. I thought that he quietly retired from acting, I had no idea about what he'd been going through. It's a crying shame, he was one of my favorite childhood actors, and I'm glad that he's having a resurgence.
Literally the most well deserved comeback in recent years. You can tell that Brendan likely dug into his own personal experiences to bring the main character to life, almost disturbingly so. And his Oscar speech feels like he was just gasping for air from sheer disbelief. But he definetly *earned it*
His post-show speech was even more telling. “If you just put one foot in front of the other and step towards the light, good things will happen.” He also took the award and pointed to his chest and said, nearly crying, “believe ME. If I can do it, you can too.” I needed that more than anything at this stage of my life.

Brendan Fraser movies made up the most of my pre-teen to young adult years. I watch The Mummy at least once a year, and I adore his comedies like George of the Jungle, Bedazzled, and Blast from the Past. It was several years ago when I realized I hadn’t seen him in anything new and I was both heartbroken and pissed off when I bothered to look up what happened to him. I usually don’t give two shits about the Oscars, but this year I was cheering so hard for Fraser to win. He’s so heartfelt and genuine and no one deserved to win more than him. I really hope my local con invites him to come because I will be first in line to meet the man.

The best part of Brendan's Oscar is that we'll get to see him in even more roles, excited to see what he does next. "The Whale" is definitely one of those movies you watch once, but it should be seen by everyone. Brendan's performance is just stunning.
Nah!! I'd watch it again and again. People have said that they can only watch Aronofski's Requiem For A Dream once because it was so depressing(with an amazing Oscar nominated performance by Ellen Burstyn who SHOULD have won), but I can watch that movie again and again just like The Whale
Yeah, as a guy who suffered from prematurely thinning hair, I was SO JEALOUS of the IMPRESSIVE mop Fraser displayed in The Mummy franchise. So I have to admit feeling a sense of PETTY PLEASURE when photos started leaking of his REAL hair, which was thin & patchy, and actually looked WORSE than mine! lol
Brendan Fraser truly deserved that Oscar man... I was pretty happy when he won it and I saw him give his speech. Hope his career continues to be successful.

just saw this a few hours ago at a cool, small, local independent theater. it was great. I thought i'd cry more as the trailer got to me. then the ending came and oh boy! it was physically difficult to refrain from weeping like a close friend had died. and the craft to make Fraser look so big was unbelievable. very stirring. glad I saw it.
2022 was THE year for comebacks. First Ke Huy Quan, and then Brendan Fraser. They co-starred in "Encino Man" together, and both struggled to find acting work for a while. Their Oscar wins were well deserved!
Quan looks like Jackie Chan with his glasses. You can tell his Chinese genes are more dominant than his Vietnamese genes, but you can still see some Vietnamese more dominantly in his eyes.
Words cannot describe how incredibly happy I was to watch Fraser win his first Oscar!! I grew up watching George of the Jungle and Looney Tunes: Back in Action as a kid, so seeing him make it to this point is truly remarkable! I really hope this will bring his career back on track ✊🏻
I love how this can be somewhat relatable to Brendon's real life even though the circumstances are different but I think he lived through the shooting relating to his real life circumstances which won an Oscar, one of the most deserved Oscars.

Respect is owed BF not only for his comeback, not only for a stellar performance, but perhaps especially because he was kicked to the kerb for being unwilling to keep quiet in the face of power that almost succeeded in destroying him. It's those enormous ocean blue eyes he has. He's always, at least from what I've seen, acted with his eyes. You can really see the all his pain in his eyes; the physical pain, mental and emotional pain, all rests in those giant eyes that you can't look away from. His mannerisms and tone keep you locked on him every time he's on screen, not just in this movie, but even in his goofier works like Air Heads and George of the Jungle. I've always thought he was a brilliant actor, one of the best of his generation and he was so close to being type casted for a minute before his unjustified exile. I missed him so much for such a long time, it was so satisfying to see him in this movie and watch him do what, at least, I always knew he could. I can't recommend this movie enough, just be prepared for a really heavy, no pun intended, emotional struggle. Even if you're not overly empathetic, you'll feel every word he speaks in this film. And the supporting cast is equally moving in their emotional renderings towards a man they know, barely know, love and are angry at. This is one of the best examples of storytelling, character building, and point blank filmmaking I've seen in such a long time. Stupid Hollywood. "Just when I thought I was out, you pull me back in". This movie is worth watching at least once in your lifetime, because it will stay with you forever.
You're reading too much in to what's "behind the eyes". You can root for the guy but be aware of seeing things that are just not there. I saw the film this weekend with a friend and we laughed and rolled our eyes at the unoriginal cringe. This was a pure Oscar-bait film. And the fact that the film had the typical anti-Hollywood msg deserves no respect. I hope Fraser finds better work.
I saw this film and I emotionally connected with it. It makes me want to make some serious changes in life and be a better version of myself and it showed me the true consequences of loneliness, self destructive behaviors, and depression and appreciate the things you have in life and make the most of it and make and cherish new and old connections with people. It’s never too late is a phrase I often hear a lot but in retrospect time is something not many of us have and need to evaluate how to make the most of it and move forward.

this movie broke me down. I have a lot of self-destruction in my family. My father was unable to help himself and eventually died early because of his choices. bravo to Darren Aronofsky for choice in casting and impeccable vision. bravo to Brendan for this historic performance.
I just watched this tonight. The performances were all perfection. The story is tragic and honest. There isn’t a dull moment here and it’s not an action movie. Pure brilliance all around.

You've got to love it when an actor after years of having been shunned into the Hollywood wilderness performs a perfect comeback story arc in real life by winning the best actor Oscar in his first leading role in years.
A month after my wife died, my brother and his girlfriend were at my house, watching Blast From the Past. Still in a deep depression from the loss of my wife, I was barely paying attention, but something about that movie got through and I found myself laughing out loud. That was when I realized maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel, and thus began my recovery. I eventually felt enough better to write and publish a few books and I'm doing okay again; but I will be forever indebted to the good people who worked to make that movie so good, because it was exactly the blessing I needed. All good wishes.
Yes the mummy 1 and 2 are awesome. Though tbh it is not because of brendan frasers acting. I think many actors could have played that role well. The whale on the other hand he steals the show

I was fortunate enough to see this film at the theater, and it warms my heart to know you enjoyed it too. The Whale is such a painful, wonderful, and emotional experience by my all-time favorite director and starring a kindhearted and tortured man who brings new depth to the main character in a performance for the ages.
Brendan Fraser in this movie delivers one of the greatest acting performances I have ever seen. I kept wondering where Brendan Fraser went and now he's back and I couldn't be happier. It almost makes me want to cry. I remember feeling sad when I saw this guy in stuff when I was a kid and he disappeared. Just wow, this dude is back and won an Oscar and I cannot wait to see what he does next.
This movie saved my life. I had gotten so big that I had an ankle injury where I really couldn’t walk. I had to use a walker to go from my bedroom/office to the bathroom and back. I thought I would end up in a wheelchair but I saw this movie and said I can’t be that guy, so far I’ve lost over 60 pounds and can get around great so thank you Brendan Fraser.
Dang, Brendan Fraser went through was a lot but I am quite pleased that he is back. The Mummy was the original action adventure movie that got a lot of us into movies while George of the Jungle is a certified childhood classic.

Jesus, when she opens the door for the last time and the light hits her face, it hits me so hard. The camera cuts from her silhouette against the sun, she's leaving, she doesn't care, to her face with the sunlight on it, she's completely broken down and crying because she cares SO MUCH. It's an incredibly powerful emotional scene.
I recently showed my wife The Mummy, as she had never seen it before. She absolutely loved it, and thought Brendan Fraser was so charming and likable in the role.

It's been a long time since I saw a film that made me reflect on my life choices. Most films that try feel like they are trying to talk down to you from a holy than thou position. Or worse yet, push some sort of rhetoric on why you should feel bad because you don't follow a certain way of thinking. Life is not so simple or easy to unravel when the choices we make and the consequences we live with pile up. Watching this film...the deterioration of his health and relationships with those around him hit close to home. I have had family and friends like this wanting to help them, but they are too far gone or set in their ways. Addictions to drugs and alcohol that they turned to when life got overwhelming. PTSD, regret, depression, anger, and so much more have taken many people in my life. The film, along with others made by this director, is always so thought-provoking and ends on a bitter note. Still, Brendan Frasier and the supporting cast did an excellent job bringing this story to life. There will always be idiots who hate on a film because it brings up an uncomfortable truth. Showing what life is like and the struggles to do normal things for someone that is massively overweight gives perspective.
I always loved Brendan Fraser in the 90s and early 00s ❤️ I didn't follow celeb stuff back then, so I had no idea what he had been through. He's a fantastic actor though, so honest, authentic and genuine in his performances. 👍🏻
Watching the clips of Brendan in this movie, while hearing you describe it, and knowing what he went through in his career, is honestly pretty emotional. I'm not too much of a cynic to be able to admit that.
I’m a relatively hard guy, I’m pretty emotionally numb and been through alot. I’m not typically kind except on rare occasions where I feel someone truly needs it or deserves it. But seeing Frasier’s redemption arc gets my cold dead heart a flutter. He was in so many of my favorite movies growing up, made me laugh and cry. To hear the struggles he has went through and to see his fans truly pouring out their support and love for a man that truly deserves it is something that reminds you the world isn’t wholly corrupted just yet. So many times you hear about a movie stars fans or a musician’s having an “outpouring of empathy” or something along those lines and usually it is an exaggeration. But for Brendan it is real and it is a very powerful thing to witness.
Fraser was absolutely hysterical in Bedazzled, especially as "the most sensitive man in the world." Also loved the (?) unintentional beaver shot from lovely Liz Hurley. 😌
This brings up some really sad memories for me. I had a manager about 20 years ago who had lost her husband in a tragic railroad accident. We saw her go from being about 200 pounds to so large she could no longer walk. She used one of those scooters to get from her car into the office. Eventually the toll on her body was too much and died from a massive hear attack. She was a really sweet lady, though, and treated everyone incredibly well.

Pretty good timing for a movie like this to come out. It’s easy for us to see how other addictions ruin people’s lives when it’s on the big screen, but I have never seen a movie display this type of addiction. Like any other, it ruins not only your life but the lives of those close to you.

We had the good fortune to meet Brendan Fraser at Fan Expo in Toronto. My mother told him about her back surgery, because she has the same type injuries that he does. He was very moved and actually teared up. He gave her a hug, held her hands, and thanked her for coming to visit him. He's not just a great actor, but more importantly, he's a good man who genuinely loves his fans.
Was it 2019? It has grown to a genuine regret that I didn't consider meeting him, even though I met Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Peter Capaldi, Sean Astin, John Travolta, Edward James Olmos, Sean Young, waved at Jeff Goldblum, and hugged Cory Feldman for all the shit he has gone through. Oh, I remember Ke Huy Quan at that same event promoting the Goonies, as if missing Brendan then sucks hard looking back. Next time they're on tour, I shall be meeting both gentlemen.

Just about every story about Brendan Fraser tells you he's a phenomenal human being as well as a fine actor.
See I grew up with a dad who was 800 pounds. His life, particularly his impending death, was an imminent and ever present conversation and topic in my childhood. I'll never forget being brought into a doctors office so the doctor could tell me and my sister, in front of my dad, that he would never live to see us graduate high school let alone have kids (and he didn't). We werent allowed to talk about his weight because it made him upset or embarassed him. Now I wish we had. When I seen trailers for this movie I was nervous.
It was such a good movie, despite me having to pause to cry every few minutes because it reminded me soo much of things I had forgotten from my childhood.

Having had to deal with it in both father and husband, I completely agree. Doesn't mean it will work, however, as I tried an intervention recently with a cousin who is now no longer speaking to me. I couldn't live with the PTSD, so it's probably just as well. There's nothing worse than watching a loved one destroy themselves and they won't listen to you or anyone.

I got a lifelong friend whose over 400 lbs. Tried for years to help him lose it and get into more than tv and TikTok. He won’t live long enough to see his kids drive their first car. Got to a point where I had to cut him out of my life. There’s only so much you can do.

I watched this film on streaming, not in a theater (which I partially regret) but man that line was one of those that just sucked every ounce of air out it was so…raw. He earned the fuck out of that Oscar.
What was most compelling to me was watching these 5 actors just pour their heart and soul into this movie. Its really all set in just one room. No distractions, just raw emotions from the actors.

The best part of this movie is the fact that it didn't rely on CGI, it didn't rely on the most famous actors in social media, nor did it focus on political drama. This movie was amazing because of the writing and because talented actors, who understood the character's pain. The casting director was spot on and the director played his cards perfectly. Hats off to this film indeed.

The saddest part about this movie is that it's implied if Charlie had met Ellie sooner, she would have saved him, and he would have been the supportive guardian she was sorely missing in her life. It's a story about regret and hindsight and is definitely a cautionary tale to take action and to not let your problems fester under the rug before it's too late.

The film doesn't say "fat is disgusting", it says "addiction can be disgusting", which I think what those who rail against it are really railing against. The fact that a movie so daringly shows that when you choose to succumb to your addictions, they will destroy you. Those who relish in their addictions hate being faced with that truth.
I agree with you and even if the movie said that obesity is unhealthy. That would have been completely fine by me. I think that almost every other movie about someone obese that came out recently is more about how they are good the way they are, this of course is not true. Obesity is not fun and can be really damaging to a person and since I have dealt with this problem too. I don't see a problem in this movie portraying it that way.
Also if the people on twitter actually bothered to watch the movie, they would find out that the movie is about much more than "fat guy unhealthy".

Well, to be fair, his own daughter is disgusted by his apperance, although in her case there is a lot more to it. But every first reaction to Charlie's appearance is negative, like when he turns on his webcam or goes out of the door to have a look at the pizza delivery driver. So, i see where those comments come from. That ofc doesn't change the fact that those people are absolute lunatics and their agenda is trash. This whole fat-acceptance thing is gross and pisses me off - and i'm saying this as someone whome it definitely couldn't hurt to lose some weight. It's a good movie, i'm probably not as ecstatic about it as a lot of other people seem to be, but it definitely wasn't a waste of time.
It doesn't have to say it when it shows it so clearly. This is why I say I am pro fat shaming. Literally nobody with bad habits has ever improved themselves without feeling at least a little ashamed of themselves first. Emotions serve a purpose, especially negative ones, and people would be a lot healthier if they could understand why they feel how they feel and listen to their emotions.

The scene with Charlie and his ex wife was simply phenomenal. Just 10 minutes of amazing actors acting. You think his ex wife is some alcoholic bitch up to this point, but you see that’s she actually extremely sympathetic towards Charlie and still has some love for him. You see that she genuinely tried to be a good mother but has completely lost hope in her daughter. Charlie’s unwavering optimism despite his condition is so inspiring and beautiful. And I know this moment has been talked about to death, but the line “I need to know that I have done one thing right with my life.” Is delivered with such raw pain and desperation by Fraser, it just broke me instantly. That Oscar was so well deserved
Obese people have been furious about this movie because "it's paints being 'big' in a negative light." The thing is... It IS negative to be 500 lbs. I struggled with obesity when I was a teenager. I came out the other side of it but ONLY I could change. I didn't shout down films or people that may mention the word 'fat' within 50 yards of me.
It was a beautiful film and I am glad Fraiser made it back.

This movie hit home really hard for me. I relate to Charlie so much; for him it is food, for me it's been on and off with alcohol. When you get stuck, it is really hard to get unstuck, willingly consuming the very thing that is slowly killing you, even when you know it is a brutal thing to live with. To anyone out there struggling with any sort of addictive lifestyle, I feel your pain and I hope it gets better for all of us.

On through the years this conduct continues, accompanied by his continual promises to be careful or to keep off the streets altogether. Finally, he can no longer work, his wife gets a divorce and he is held up to ridicule. He tries every known means to get the jaywalking idea out of his head. He shuts himself up in an asylum, hoping to mend his ways. But the day he comes out he races in front of a fire engine, which breaks his back. Such a man would be crazy, wouldn't he?
You may think our illustration is too ridiculous. But is it? We, who have been through the wringer, have to admit if we substituted alcoholism for jay-walking, the illustration would fit exactly. Saw this one in theaters back in December with a friend who also isn’t exactly the thinnest fellow. Even he was disgusted at the eating bits and said he almost broke down. After that, he actually started controlling what he ate.

There was a teenager around my old hometown who would eat constantly. Didn't know what was going on in his personal life, but I heard his family was negligent. The last time i saw him was on a bus, wheezing and looking severely depressed. A couple weeks later, he passed away in his sleep at 17. My younger sister would chat to him during high school and really impacted her. The Whale reminded me of that addiction and how it can impact someone's life.

As someone who struggles with their weight I watched the Whale not knowing exactly what to expect and I was left captivated, deeply saddened and in tears at parts. It makes you reflect on your life, the mistakes and what do we hold most dear. I could see aspects of myself in the performance and it opens your eyes. An amazing performance and a well deserved win.

Show was utterly amazing
I used to be 400 lbs, so this movie kind of hit close to home for me. I was never immobile, but I definitely related to the binge eating, and like Fraser's character, a lot of my eating was due to emotional reasons. Overeating is an addiction, no different than someone shooting up heroin on the streets, and The Whale captured that better than any movie I've seen.
EDIT: I never expected so many replies, but in case anyone was curious, I did lose the weight and got down to 200 lbs. Basically, the only way to get through it is to change your mental outlook on food. Instead of viewing food as some type of reward or emotional pick-me-up, view it strictly as a a source of energy. Instead of viewing ice cream as a tasty treat, view it as cold poison that will ruin your insides. It may sound extreme, but it works.

Like I wish I could be an alcoholic NOW instead of back in my 20s! It sucked having to actually VISIT the 'The Brewers Retail' when I ran out of 'stubbies', but now they'll happily bring along a SIX-PACK when you order any food!
I get you. I never became obese thank god. Just overweight. But as a teen I WAS an emotional eater.
And I am never going to deny that at all. I was fat as a kid, in my teens, and early twenties. Because I was comfort eating.
I was depressed and I ate really bad crap to distract me from my emotions.
And of course the horrible irony is that these crap food MAKES people depressed, and then you eat more to escape the depression, and the food makes you more depressed, and it's just a spiral going down.
It's horrible how this addiction and these kinds of food has just become so accepted in our modern society.
Sure you can eat a whole bag of chips a day! That's just not normal! ..... no... No it's not. That's pure starch and seed oil right in your gullet with no nutritional value at all. It's poison.
My father died abruptly of complications from obesity when I was 19. Growing up, he was so damn affectionate and wanting to be involved in my life hut, I was embarrassed of him and disgusted by his gut. In the end, he died before I could ask his forgiveness and before I could let him impart the meaning of being a man. Part of me still hates him but, it's because his actions stole our time and I can never get that back. Cherish your parents while they yet breathe, and learn as much as you can from them; they're not immortal.

I expressed _that_ bit about my father because I felt it conveyed the importance of cherishing family before they're gone and simultaneously the shamefulness of obesity given its consequences for one's self and others.

I don't see it about hedonism at all! I see it as someone who lived his life for others because he didn't feel worthy of being able to live for himself. If you remember his marriage wasn't a happy one. He finally decides to do something that makes himself happy (the relationship with the student) but after 4 years the love of his life ends his own life because of the treatment from his family. Charlie feels responsible for that as well.
So Charlie took a chance on allowing himself to be happy and that turned to crap so he is carrying the grief of also knowing that he's just a miserable as he would have been if he stayed in his marriage but at least then the people around him would have been happier (note I'm not saying happy, just happier than they are) so why did he even try to be happy himself?? His old belief that he didn't deserve to be happy proved itself to be true in his eyes so he carries the guilt of everyone else's pain as well.
In order to cope, he eats. The only coping mechanism that won't pain anyone else (at least in his mind) and only hurts himself, who he feels deserves it anyways.

Brendan Fraser 100% earned his Oscar for this movie. Rarely do I see true commitment to a role like this; and he nails it right on the head. I second the recommendation for anyone who hasn't seen this emotional masterpiece.
I would, but I don't think I have the emotional willpower to even go halfway through the film after hearing people say it's sad, and with the fact I cried at the end of Diary of a Wimpy kid the long haul

I honestly forgot about Brendan Fraser. I thought that he quietly retired from acting, I had no idea about what he'd been going through. It's a crying shame, he was one of my favorite childhood actors, and I'm glad that he's having a resurgence.

Brendan Fraser movies made up the most of my pre-teen to young adult years. I watch The Mummy at least once a year, and I adore his comedies like George of the Jungle, Bedazzled, and Blast from the Past. It was several years ago when I realized I hadn’t seen him in anything new and I was both heartbroken and pissed off when I bothered to look up what happened to him. I usually don’t give two shits about the Oscars, but this year I was cheering so hard for Fraser to win. He’s so heartfelt and genuine and no one deserved to win more than him. I really hope my local con invites him to come because I will be first in line to meet the man.

I thought i'd cry more as the trailer got to me. then the ending came and oh boy! it was physically difficult to refrain from weeping like a close friend had died. and the craft to make Fraser look so big was unbelievable. very stirring. glad I saw it.

It's those enormous ocean blue eyes he has. He's always, at least from what I've seen, acted with his eyes. You can really see the all his pain in his eyes; the physical pain, mental and emotional pain, all rests in those giant eyes that you can't look away from. His mannerisms and tone keep you locked on him every time he's on screen, not just in this movie, but even in his goofier works like Air Heads and George of the Jungle. I've always thought he was a brilliant actor, one of the best of his generation and he was so close to being type casted for a minute before his unjustified exile. I missed him so much for such a long time, it was so satisfying to see him in this movie and watch him do what, at least, I always knew he could. I can't recommend this movie enough, just be prepared for a really heavy, no pun intended, emotional struggle. Even if you're not overly empathetic, you'll feel every word he speaks in this film. And the supporting cast is equally moving in their emotional renderings towards a man they know, barely know, love and are angry at. This is one of the best examples of storytelling, character building, and point blank filmmaking I've seen in such a long time. Stupid Hollywood. "Just when I thought I was out, you pull me back in". This movie is worth watching at least once in your lifetime, because it will stay with you forever.
You're reading too much in to what's "behind the eyes". You can root for the guy but be aware of seeing things that are just not there.
I saw the film this weekend with a friend and we laughed and rolled our eyes at the unoriginal cringe. This was a pure Oscar-bait film. And the fact that the film had the typical anti-Hollywood msg deserves no respect. I hope Fraser finds better work.

I saw this film and I emotionally connected with it. It makes me want to make some serious changes in life and be a better version of myself and it showed me the true consequences of loneliness, self destructive behaviors, and depression and appreciate the things you have in life and make the most of it and make and cherish new and old connections with people. It’s never too late is a phrase I often hear a lot but in retrospect time is something not many of us have and need to evaluate how to make the most of it and move forward.

A month after my wife died, my brother and his girlfriend were at my house, watching Blast From the Past. Still in a deep depression from the loss of my wife, I was barely paying attention, but something about that movie got through and I found myself laughing out loud. That was when I realized maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel, and thus began my recovery. I eventually felt enough better to write and publish a few books and I'm doing okay again; but I will be forever indebted to the good people who worked to make that movie so good, because it was exactly the blessing I needed. I was fortunate enough to see this film at the theater, and it warms my heart to know you enjoyed it too. The Whale is such a painful, wonderful, and emotional experience by my all-time favorite director and starring a kindhearted and tortured man who brings new depth to the main character in a performance for the ages.
Brendan Fraser in this movie delivers one of the greatest acting performances I have ever seen. I kept wondering where Brendan Fraser went and now he's back and I couldn't be happier. It almost makes me want to cry. I remember feeling sad when I saw this guy in stuff when I was a kid and he disappeared. Just wow, this dude is back and won an Oscar and I cannot wait to see what he does next.
This movie saved my life. I had gotten so big that I had an ankle injury where I really couldn’t walk. I had to use a walker to go from my bedroom/office to the bathroom and back. I thought I would end up in a wheelchair but I saw this movie and said I can’t be that guy, so far I’ve lost over 60 pounds and can get around great so thank you Brendan Fraser.
Amazing mate. Keep going, don't give up and if that little voice in your head says you are failing tell em I said f off. I been there but with drugs.

Dang, Brendan Fraser went through was a lot but I am quite pleased that he is back. The Mummy was the original action adventure movie that got a lot of us into movies while George of the Jungle is a certified childhood classic.
It was so long since I saw Brendan Fraser in anything that when I saw the initial screenshots for this movie, I didnt realise it was makeup and thought Brendan Fraser had really let himself go. Good to see him back and acting again
His two episodes in the series Scrubs almost stole the entire show. Highly recommended viewing.
Jesus, when she opens the door for the last time and the light hits her face, it hits me so hard. The camera cuts from her silhouette against the sun, she's leaving, she doesn't care, to her face with the sunlight on it, she's completely broken down and crying because she cares SO MUCH. It's an incredibly powerful emotional scene.
I believe it was the film makers way of expressing that she was his angel here to save him.
I recently showed my wife The Mummy, as she had never seen it before.
She absolutely loved it, and thought Brendan Fraser was so charming and likable in the role.
Strong man. I would've divorced her if she had never seen The Mummy.

She's not from North America originally, and when she grew up there were not a lot of available movies to see, nor the time and/or money to see them.
It's been a real treat to introduce her to classics that she gets to see for the very first time.

It's been a long time since I saw a film that made me reflect on my life choices. Most films that try feel like they are trying to talk down to you from a holy than thou position. Or worse yet, push some sort of rhetoric on why you should feel bad because you don't follow a certain way of thinking. Life is not so simple or easy to unravel when the choices we make and the consequences we live with pile up. Watching this film...the deterioration of his health and relationships with those around him hit close to home. I have had family and friends like this wanting to help them, but they are too far gone or set in their ways. Addictions to drugs and alcohol that they turned to when life got overwhelming. PTSD, regret, depression, anger, and so much more have taken many people in my life. The film, along with others made by this director, is always so thought-provoking and ends on a bitter note. Still, Brendan Frasier and the supporting cast did an excellent job bringing this story to life. There will always be idiots who hate on a film because it brings up an uncomfortable truth. Showing what life is like and the struggles to do normal things for someone that is massively overweight gives perspective.
I liked how Gary from Nerdrodic said it. Aronsfsky makes slice of life but it's worst type of life.

I didn't follow celeb stuff back then, so I had no idea what he had been through. He's a fantastic actor though, so honest, authentic and genuine in his performances. 👍🏻

Watching the clips of Brendan in this movie, while hearing you describe it, and knowing what he went through in his career, is honestly pretty emotional. I'm not too much of a cynic to be able to admit that.
I’m a relatively hard guy, I’m pretty emotionally numb and been through alot. I’m not typically kind except on rare occasions where I feel someone truly needs it or deserves it.
But seeing Frasier’s redemption arc gets my cold dead heart a flutter. He was in so many of my favorite movies growing up, made me laugh and cry.
To hear the struggles he has went through and to see his fans truly pouring out their support and love for a man that truly deserves it is something that reminds you the world isn’t wholly corrupted just yet.
So many times you hear about a movie stars fans or a musician’s having an “outpouring of empathy” or something along those lines and usually it is an exaggeration. But for Brendan it is real and it is a very powerful thing to witness.
Fraser was absolutely hysterical in Bedazzled, especially as "the most sensitive man in the world." Also loved the (?) unintentional beaver shot from lovely Liz Hurley. 😌

A wonderful way for an always-underrated actor to make a comeback. I hope to see more from Brendan.
This brings up some really sad memories for me. I had a manager about 20 years ago who had lost her husband in a tragic railroad accident. We saw her go from being about 200 pounds to so large she could no longer walk. She used one of those scooters to get from her car into the office. Eventually the toll on her body was too much and died from a massive hear attack. She was a really sweet lady, though, and treated everyone incredibly well.
Arnofsky brought back 2 great actors back to Oscar winning performances... what a maestro.

He seems like a genuine good guy and that really comes across in his work. His fans have never given up on him.

He’s one of those people that life’s pain shows on his face. I always feel so bad for him and I usually don’t care about famous people.
Pretty good timing for a movie like this to come out. It’s easy for us to see how other addictions ruin people’s lives when it’s on the big screen, but I have never seen a movie display this type of addiction. Like any other, it ruins not only your life but the lives of those close to you.
There are few people as universally loved as Brendan Fraser, even though he hasn't been in the spot light for many years as soon as people are reminded of him they all just wishes the best for him.
He was amazing back in the day. Just an absolute star in every way. Sad to not see him be for years but happy for the comeback
A phenomenal performance..It was amazing the way he made it hard to watch yet you couldn't take your eyes off him..never a more deserving Oscar won. Brilliant supporting cast performances as well
