Actually, the females click when they like what they hear and the males will move towards that click. David Attenbourgh showed this and was able to control a cicada by clicking his fingers together, the male would walk towards and even fly towards the sound. Thank you for the video.
Yes. I remember this too. I replicated the experiment. I was soon attracting hundreds of male cicadas! Was a neat trick. I weaponized it. Took my flock of cicadas on tour. And left them at a friends house. I waited a while, and left most of them there. 😊
Thank you for telling me how they sound and why they do that, because whenever I think of them doing it imagine the female just hearing “EEEUUUUEEEUUUUEEEUUUU” And going “ Oh I will John! “😂
I have been bitten by a cicada. I held in in my palm and cupped over it with my other hand, shading it from the sun. I sat there talking to my brother with it in my hands for about 15 minutes and I felt one of the most painful stinging/ringing sensation with a feeling of something moving around in my hand. I checked, and it had its proboscis in my palm. I had to rip it off and watched the proboscis come out. It must have gotten comfortable and mistaken my hand for a tree.
One of my favorite activities as a child during summer, was to catch cicadas. I would sometimes climb 15 feet up to get them. Many flew away as I got close. Would catch them hatching out of their holes just after dark, and let them climb my bedroom curtains to molt and let their wings fold out and dry. My mom wasn’t very keen on that. lol.
I too was a cicada nut when I was a kid in Pennsylvania. The sound of them was so attractive to me as a summer time event. I am not even female! You however, went just one step further than me. I would have been murdered by the parents if I was caught bringing them into the house.
I was “lucky” enough to be a child when the 17-year cicadas woke up in Manassas, VA in the early ‘70s. It was so LOUD! And scary. And crunchy. Oh, and fun for a little girl like me. I had quite an imagination. I played with them, their dead corpses, and their shells. That was back when I was 4 years old. They’d get stuck in my thick brown hair. I’d stomp and jump and shake, flailing my arms around, squealing and trying to get them off, only to have another land on my head. I got used to it. Then they were gone.
I love your channel! Do you think you could dissect a flounder next? Given the way they go from looking like a normal fish when young to becoming flat and both eyes moving to one side of their head would make for an interesting video!
I think that a flounders organs don't really move and it's just the eye. But you know what, that does sound pretty cool, I wonder how their heads and nerves connect to the wandering eye and how they manage to shift.

Sebastian is adorable! Also, this video was incredibly educational. I enjoy how the info is presented and can't wait for more ppl to enjoy your content. I have a feeling you're from Korea (I'm British Korean!) 'cos I noticed on another video you were using a Korean product though it wasn't super visible (it was vinegar or smth can't remember) and the green painted concrete in some of your videos is common in Korea in parking areas and apartment rooftops. Because of your fun brand of memey humour I was wondering if you were either Korean or Japanese. Anyway, the twerking was hilarious, but most of all I learned so much about cicadas and it's fascinating how their internal structure can create such interesting vibration sounds like a can being crushed in an echo chamber. You've got a great talent for teaching! Tysm :>
In germany, Cicada only become about 6 mm in length (Philaenus spumarius). Most germans are oblivious to the fact that we even have those at all because they are so small that they are usually mistaken for beetles or bugs.
How you preserve this animals that you can still move them without breaking it's amazing? Someone in my family I barely remember used to be a bug catcher he literally had a whole room full of insects but I was only able to visit when I was a kid and I thought it was pretty boring but as a grown up I probably wouldn't leave that room for days it's freaking interesting!
Great video here. I learned alot more here then the other videos. Thanks for spending the time to educate us. I know time is the most valuable thing...
I found a cicada in a bad spot so I went to put it in a better spot. While it was climbing my arm it thought I mightve been vegetation and I felt a sting. It might not suck your blood but I guess that doesnt mean it wont get confused.
I found recently a young cicada to emerge out from its skin and fly away leaving its skin. Thanks for your video on anatomy of Cicada. Now, I could identify that cicada as a male one.
I once picked up a large, beautiful cicada and let it sit on my hand, knowing it to be harmless. Except it decided I was a tree, and jabbed me real good with it's proboscis. So they're not very bright. 🤣
A cicada was on a step to my porch. I stepped on it by accident….I heard a loud crunch noise. Afterwards it started screaming and spinning for a SUPERRR long time. It eventually died…. leaving me traumatized I’m not gonna lie. I feel so bad,I killed it with my big toe 😅 Barely stepping on it killed it.
There was one in my grass, and I thought it was a bee, and I thought it was stuck in the grass, and I tried to put it out of its misery but… You know what

Fun fact

The word you're looking for to describe David's actions is "Snapping". He was snapping his fingers together.

Dang, sorry to hear about that. must have felt like a nail driven into your palm
"Hmm... Doesn't taste like tree. Taste good tho"

It happened to me too, I didn't know they can sting like that..

Plenty in Las Vegas if you ever want them 😂
They constantly pop up each year in the south. I guess there's just a lot more rotating cycles of em down here than up north?
Next time someone says he/she is empty inside, remember that male cicadas exists.
Just in time as I got to Greece a day ago and holy crap these guys are loud.
They can be as loud as they want. I love their sound. ❤

Cicadas are actually really cute 😊
Ikr???
In germany, Cicada only become about 6 mm in length (Philaenus spumarius). Most germans are oblivious to the fact that we even have those at all because they are so small that they are usually mistaken for beetles or bugs.
Live cicadas are annoying enough. Yet this man is telling people how to make dead ones cry. Now that's a supervillain move.
cry? its more like a call or song....sounds pleasant.
Cicada:
“Wow, fascinating. Can I have my ass back now, please?”
Ok I totally pictured someone blowing into the detached abdomen like a whistle and making a perfect cicada call 😂

Isopropyl alcohol and gentle hands.
We finally caught the little mf that shows up in almost every anime
Another thing about cicadas, they actually taste real good, kinda like walnuts, at least from my experience.

Impressive. I was thinking about this the other day when I found a cicada. Now I'm drinking beer and learning about this insect.
people: why cant we just grow our own muscles like that!?
cicadas: evolution, kiddos
Cicada lives underground for 14 years
13-17
I'm fascinated, but it doesn't make me loathe that sound any less, sadly
Wow so cute cat at the end 🐈😻
And people say there is no god.
The best way to make cicadas cry is to let them know that they just wasted 99% of their life buried in the ground.
So kinda like how a cat purrs
0:17 does anyone else feel that noise in their throat..
Weird loud fish
Wait a minute... That isn't a fish!
Thank you for providing such great tutorial videos, and the cat is very cute. There's a cat of the same color downstairs at my place too.

That cicada is such a patient individual. Such a nice insect to let you run tests on him!
so now I know cicadas just have a void on their abdomen 💀

But why people in the comments are so triggered when the video is not about something "fishy"? They are all interesting in the same way...
I'm a Landscaper that works outside. For years the noise of Cicadas has annoyed me by giving headaches. The year of a Cicadas infestation is upon us.
They have built in speakers.

U can vibrate ur hand by contracting ur muscles. I can vibrate mine to max 25-50 times per second but later it hurts alot

So basically they make that sound around sundown to attract mates because freaks come out at night??
the design is very cicada
very easy to use
Theyre also immune to dmg unless hit by a super effective move
