    Well Lynn & Richard ...I for one am soooo glad 'you're back in the garden again'! Loved your song and I'm so happy for Richard being able to see the things that he's been missing.... oh, and Lynn those are "laugh lines" not wrinkles. You two together make me so happy!

    I had no squash, zucchini and melons this year. I think I had a disease or pest. So I'm glad your went well. We also got hit by hail in early summer

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi apirlrain, thank you for your well wishes for Rick. Sorry you had such bad luck with your squash. Some years are just better than others. Are you able to plant them in a new place next year? That may help. We too got hail and it tore into the leaves and left scars on the tomatoes and squash itself. Better luck next time. Good thing gardeners are patient people. So many wonderful things in this video; Richard on the mend from his first procedure, Lynn's lovely voice, the delicata (my fave squash), oodles of garlic, and more. Thanks for all of it!
    Regarding garlic, I noticed when I got hardneck garlic in my CSA box last year, the individual garlic cloves were a nice uniform size and clustered evenly around the hard "neck", as opposed to the grocery store variety garlic heads in which the individual cloves get smaller and barely usable after you get past the bigger cloves at the outside of the head. Is that nice uniformity typical of hardneck garlic? I really enjoyed cooking with the hardneck, because it was much less fussy to liberate it from the head, and all the cloves were usable and of a nice size.

    So glad you're back! Really missed you. Squash bugs are after my squash!

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Penny. We've been experimenting with growing Dill. When the dill is full grown, we cut off the entire stalk and place them at the base of our squash plants. We think it's the odor of the dill that confuses and deters squash bugs from attacking the plant. Next year grow some dill and by the time your squash plants are starting to grow the dill will be ready. All it took was one dill plant and now dill grows all over our property so we have plenty every year for our squash plants. Give it a try and keep us posted. Thanks again for your patient support and for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

    Hello Wisconsin Gardener! Love your channel. I have a question, Saw you did a video once on African violets once so wanted to ask. I have about 2 dozen African violets in my collection and right now experiencing a strange thing with all of them...either they are not budding at all or the ones that do bud will continue to have to closed bud for months until it dries up, never opening. I've tried everything now from changing soil to fertilizer and even location. Any suggestions for me ar a diagnosis would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Debra. Since we've never had this problem with our African Violets budding but not bloomming, we had to do some research to see if we could find possible solutions. Below is some basic information we found that may be of help. Keep us posted. Thank you again for watching, caring and sharing. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com The most common reason African violets don't bloom is because they aren't getting enough light. African violets need indirect sunlight, direct can burn the leaves. Choose a north- or east- facing window for best results. Keep plants away from cold glass and rotate the pot once a week so all leaves receive light.
      Choosing and Caring for African Violets:1. Start off healthy. Choose a plant with bright emerald leaves and the flower color that you want. Make sure the pot has drainage holes.2. The right light. The most common reason African violets don’t bloom is because they aren’t getting enough light. African violets need indirect sunlight, direct can burn the leaves. Choose a north- or east- facing window for best results. Keep plants away from cold glass and rotate the pot once a week so all leaves receive light. Extend daylight by placing African violets under a grow light during winter months.3. Keep warm. African violets prefer the same temperatures most people find comfortable: between 70-80°F during the day, and around 65-70°F at night.4. Water from below. Fill the saucer using room temperature water. Let sit for about an hour and then pour excess water out. Allow the plant to dry out between waterings.5. Fertilize with Espoma’s new liquid Violet! Indoor houseplant food every 2-4 weeks in spring, summer and fall.6. Think before replanting. African violets only bloom when they’re root bound. When it is time to repot, be sure to use an organic potting soil made specifically for African violets, such as Espoma’s African Violet Mix. They flower best in small pots - choose one that’s about a third of the diameter of their leaf spread.The best guide is to feel the top of the soil: if it is dry to the touch, then it is time to water. African violets should be allowed to dry out between each watering for best results. Overwatering can kill a plant. The fine roots of an African violet need air, which cannot penetrate a soggy wet soil mass.A good potting soil for African Violets actually contains no soil (or dirt) at all. A good potting soil will be very light and porous, a quality which enhances aeration, while keeping the soil moist, but not soggy. Such a potting soil will be made primarily of block-harvested, sphagnum peat moss.Step 5- Prepare a fresh pot, the same size as before, with a light porous potting mix. Commercial potting mixes are too heavy (even the ones labeled for African violets). We recommend a homemade mix made of one part sphagnum peat moss (brown is much better than black), one part vermiculite, and one part perlite.The colorful blooms of African violets are extra special. They’ll instantly add color to any room.They’re known to bloom continuously, even throughout the darker months of winter. Place them throughout the house to enjoy their colors and velvety texture throughout the year.Once you get in a regular routine of taking care of African violets, you’ll find they grow very easily. All of their basic needs need to be met though, or they won’t bloom. Give them the right temperature, light and a good feeding, and you’ll be blooming in no time!

      Hi Mel. RE: PLANT MARKERS: We've been using Kincaid’s stainless-steel markers in various Master Gardens in which we volunteer and started adding them to our gardens in 2015 because they last longer. We also purchased a Brother PT-D600 Label Maker that comes with software to create and print professional stick-on labels that don’t crack, fade or peel off due to rain or cold weather. We prefer their black tape with white lettering, but they have other tape options you may prefer. Together they have been a reliable combination. Brother labeling machines are easily available online. Here’s the direct link to Kincaide Plant Markers: www.KincaidPlantMarkers.com/plant-markers. We’d appreciate giving then a shout-out from ‘Wisconsin Garden.' NOTE: We do not receive any commission for recommending either products. Thank you for watching, caring and sharing.
