Does the tracking works only by GPS or does it work together with sime kind of radio beacon? Why is the range limited, if the tracking only works by GPS?
Hi Micha, yes, the range is limited because the collar has to send it's information by VHF signal to the handheld. So basically the Handheld gets it's location via GPS/GLONASS satellite and then broadcasts that data to the handheld. If there are hills or thick forest between the collar and handheld it will effect the range.
I will be hunting woods instead of fields. I know it will get less distance than the alpha but I'm wondering if I will get more than one mile distance with the 900 or will I lose range after a mile? The package said max range is 5 miles but because I will be hunting woods I am thinking I will get less. So will I be starting out with a mile max and lose range or do I start with five miles and lose from there?
@@DoubleUHuntingSupply i spoke to the folks at Garmin and they have said that with the bundle pack it will also include a longer antenna for handheld and collars can you tell me if that's correct thanks
@@carsonmatthews1687 That is not correct. The Astro 430 system does but the Astro 900 system only comes with 10.8 MM handheld antennas and the collar antenna is 36 MM

Yes it works without maps, maps just help you see where the dog is on the landscape but you can use the compass to find the dog.

The Astro 900 will only track the T9 collar and is not compatible to track simultaneously with the Alpha 100

You'd be starting out with a mile max and lose communication further out typically.
