    Of the AI options, I think Ozone 10 has the most potential. With additional manual configuration, I think you could closely match the pro mastering closely. I felt that most of the AI mastering tools just seemed a bit muddy, with too much bass and low end, and the cymbals and high hats too squashed for my personal taste. Ozone, even using presets, had better clarity and separation than the other AI tools, IMO.
    Also really dug the tune, Nathan. Sweet vocals👍🏻

    Ozone’s AI offers a really great starting point for a master, but shouldn’t be considered a final version. Learning to tweak it to taste after running the assistant is key.

    Recently used a lovely pro guy from a million pound studio. Problem is they won't spend as much time as you would on your beloved music. Ended up using landr, went back and forth correcting things and then refined with their revision tool and it sounded incredible. Sounds pro on everything. If your good at mixing this is the best way

    Great review. I agree with your take. The pro master was clearly the best, but mastering studio sounded really good. And given that Ozone 10 is a one time cost, it may make a lot of sense to get good at that and see where you wind up. Thanks a lot.

  • @chrstphbch
    @chrstphbch ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The thing with mastering is: You kind of pay fpr someones trained ears and super high fidelity monitoring situation. Ozone might give you the tools to achieve similar results, but if you learn how to create a great master, the tool itself is probably the easiest thing to obtain. It takes a lot of practice and you really have to know your monitoring environment to make the master translate well. With the A.I. options available my feeling is that most of them just make loud and overhyped so it might sound more exciting at first (but it most cases ear fatiguing).
    If you just want to get your mix loud and ready for streaming platforms, just use Ozone or one of the services, but in my opinion mastering is about something more than that.

The thing is when it comes to music flawless is not always what makes people want to listen. Completely removing the human decisions from any part of the process will lose some thing even if that something can not be quantified. However people tastes changes over time so maybe AI masters will be exactly what people like here in a decade or less.

  • @marcuspl
    @marcuspl ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very helpful comparison. I haven't gotten to mess with Ozone 10 yet, but use Ozone 9 still. I've actually heard some comments from Ozone users that didn't love the changes made in 10. I don't find it overly bright in v9. BUT at the end of the day, the ozone stuff should get you in the ballpark. You have to further tweak it. The longer you use it the more you know what to fix, turn off, enhance, etc.. I would agree though - if you have the budget - pay to have a human do it. There are so many things that AI can't account for. Also - you can find a lot more mastering engineers these days that are honestly pretty comparable to the AI pricing. In the box mastering has opened up a lot of opportunity. Cheaper - but at the end of the day, it's still human ears making decisions.

    Ozone sounded the best. Most of these lost all transients, maybe for this genre of music that's ok but I can't stand masters with weak transients. Mastering Studio sounded the worst, perfect example, no transients, bad EQ, separation & completely washed out. Pro Master only slightly better. Landr would probably be good if you didn't choose the loudest setting, it is deff clipping now.
    Also, I don't know how you recorded this video, maybe it's something with the routing of your DAW to OBS?. But listen to it on youtube, your decision might be a lot different.

The A.I masters are louder but it makes the song sound closed in. Just my opinion. Ozone 10 sounds really good. It sounds like your original mix but louder and a littmore defined.

    Personally after using LANDR for a few projects i decided to swap for emastered. Landr takes away the low warmth away compared to the default emastered mastered version. For the best results with emastered i use the reference track mode. Even with landr reference mode, i can't get it sound good enough. One pro tip. If you want to master your own tracks you need a baseline. Let your first 2 track be mastered by someone who is skilled in this profession. Then use those masters as your own baseline for future master productions. You can then tweak the buttons and compare the output with the mastered version from the pro. Also because these masters are created by yourself, you can replicate it much easier.

    • @NathanJamesLarsen
      @NathanJamesLarsen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep - I have found over and over that I can tell when something is mastered by LANDR or not - which is not a good thing. If another person can literally be like "Yeah that sounds like a LANDR master" that's not good - it should just be "that is a great sounding master" and not specific things to point out. LANDR is almost always pushing the highs wayyyy too much and I've been finding a lot of added distortion that just doesnt sound good. I'm all for saturation but it has to make sense and add to the song quality - not just "be there"

    So good! It's kind of amazing the quality of the videos Nathan posts for free on here...this is a very practical review of why you might use the different Mastering options out there. Another reason you might choose to use a service or plug-in is for pitching a comp...the cost of playing around with lots of mockups is prohibitive for a home producer if you professionally master all of them. Btw, it's content like this that's even more in depth along with his feedback that's made me really happy with his Accelerator course. 👍

    AI mastering makes zero sense. The point of mastering is for another professional to quality check the mix and prepare it for playback. AI cannot make those decisions. It’s only able to (at the most) analyze spectrally and match a target tonal balance. You making those small decisions in Ozone 10 is not considered AI. You’re influencing the outcome by lowering the clipping and changing the target curve genre. Which is awesome! But not consider an AI master. It’s what it says.. assistance. The human factor is essential in mastering. Otherwise it’s hit or miss.

    • @NathanJamesLarsen

      Definitely do not disagree - I still use a professional mastering engineer for any kind of official release and when it comes to licensing/TV (which is what I do more now) I am doing my own mastering (not with Ozone or AI but old fashioned mastering chain) but Ozone did a great job, and I am definitely gonna be digging into it more.
      When I was earlier on I did use LANDR and found overall "good" results but like you said - you cannot get consistency which is a major downside. I just got another song mastered by my mastering guy, and I am able to tell him specifically what I want which is huge. Did a major cinematic pop track that has massive hits and impacts and I can tell him "Hey, we need to accentuate the hits but still retain clarity" or "I want the lows to be big but not hogging up space" and he can do that. And he can do it pretty much every time without needing revisions.
      So it's one of those things that if you CAN hire a great mastering engineer - it is awesome, but I was definitely impressed with Ozone 10.
