Hi Adam, I have just resurrected my fathers 1990 Daimler XJ40. It has been in dry storage for 12 years and not in too bad a condition. Prepared the engine and it started on first turn. Now working on the brakes. I’m not mechanical so these videos are great to give me the tips and confidence to do the work myself. Looking forward to watching more.
They do seem to just start right up after being stored. Hope you can get it out on the road soon
That cam cover just looks brand new. Absolutely beautiful. Can you get alot of the factory stickers still from Jaguar? Like the Daimler 4.0 sticker? I always love to replace the old worn out stickers on my cars. Awesome video.
Your amazing Adam keep up the good work . Hour videos are priceless
Thank you so much for you kind words! Glad you enjoy the videos
Great as always Adam. I used GTX on my 4 litre for years. It's great oil.
That's great to hear! I ran it in my old turbo Volvo and it liked it. Thanks for watching 😊
Hey Adam, another awesome video. I also use Castrol GTX oil. Although I have only owned my 92 XJS 4.0 Coupe for less than a year., so have only done one oil change. lol I so appreciate all of the time and effort you put into making these videos. Cheers from Winnipeg, CANADA.
Thank you! Glad more people are using the oil.
Enjoying your vids immensely and it’s helpful, it gives confidence to try to maintenance my xj40 myself. I changed the valve cover gasket last year but it still leaks somewhere. I suspect the steering system to be the culprit. Looking forward to your next xj40 vids! Thx again!
I'm about tackle som leaks up there too. Thanks for watching 😊
check the torque of your cam cover screws should be 25nm
Great video, Adam. I use Castrol GTX as well, but with the heat here in L.A., I use 20 W 50 year-round.
I haven't been able to find Castrol GTX in 20W50 here, this is the thickest I've found. On my older V12 and XJ6 I run Castrol Classic 20W50 which seems to work well.
How warm is it over there now?
@@LivingWithAClassic Right now it is nice, high of 84 degrees Fahrenheit, and with the breeze it feels nice at 74 degrees. But in the summer prime, we regularly get days over 100 degrees, and a few days over 110 degrees. We also spend time out in the California desert, too, near Palm Springs, where it gets up to 115-120 degrees on a daily basis.
@@LivingWithAClassic I run Castrol GTX 20W50 in all my classics, including my XJ40, my V12 XJ-S and my 1995 Range Rover Classic 3.9L V8.
How's the XJ40 with staying cool in such high heat?
@@LivingWithAClassic So far it has been fine. I've driven it out to Palm Desert a couple of weekends when it was over 100 degrees and it has performed fine so far as engine temperature regulation. But its air conditioning is an original R14 (?) configuration, and I am forced to run it with R134 refrigerant, so the AC is not as powerful as I need it to be to keep the cabin cool. It's not uncomfortable, but it does not cool the cabin very quickly or efficiently.
Such watchable videos, really glad I stumbled across your channel. Keep up the good work and hoping that you get many more subscribers! You are based in Sweden but you sound American?
Thank you for those kind words! I'm from Sweden and live here now but I've grown up abroad in American schools.
Look for cracks on the yellow fan. It should be replaced with new updated type. If it breaks look out, very dangerous.
You may have bad solder joints on the fuel ECM it may be causing the random stalling. I have seen leaked cooling fluid in the coil itself do that also, that stalled when the coil got too hot. Maybe get some freeze spray to try, but most likely ECM broken solder joints.
Hi Adam, cam cover looks great. I use Castrol GTX as well in my XJS. I'd be interested in seeing how clean it runs after a year. Thanks for the video! Belated happy Father's Day as well! Regards, John
I'll do an update in a year or so. I think it should be a little cleaner inside then. Thanks for watching 😊
Im a bit surprised by the way how easy you have chosen your engine oil... Just before my first XJ40 oil change, it took me "ages" to study all the information about the oil characteristics, the old and new specification marks (as originaly recommended specification API SG is outdated), etc... but I was (still am:) a motor noobie, so thats the reason obviously :) Btw, to find a proper coolant was the same rocketeering, just to find out at the end, that the correct spec. is BS6580:1992 :)
Did you do a video on removing the suspension pump on the front of the engine?
Good video Adam I have a 2.9 xj40 they do drive nice my ones missing think it would be spark plugs has not been on a long run for a while will take plugs out clean them take it for a long drive hope that it runs better how are you getting on with the mk 2 s type Adam cheers for now.
Isn't there a 2nd drain plug on the back of the front portion of the sump? What about checking the head bolt torque and checking the valve clearances?
I'm curious living in a place with colder climate why you picked oil that is thicker at the startup? In cold climate the most protection for the engine comes from very thin oil so it can move quickly through the engine parts.
Cover looks great. Try vinegar to remove rust in engine bay Look up duralube. It is amazing.
I'll have to try that, thank you!
How can you use those metal half moon seals if all of the gaskets you can find already have the moon shape as part of the seal they are not separate?
Hi Adam,
First of all, great video and thanks for the tips. I've recently bought a XJ40 and trying to do precisely what you are doing. Quick question, you've mentioned the sticker for the engine cover, where did you find them?
Keep up with these videos as an amateur mechanic they help me a lot. Cheers.
I've found them on eBay from time to time. Thanks for watching and best of luck with your XJ40 😊
hard to find, get the part number and put an alert on ebay
Where did you order that gasket from?
Hi Adam, I have just acquired a Daimler very similar to yours and was thinking about painting the cam cover as well. However I am unable to find the Daimler 4.0 decal anywhere. Have you managed to source one yet?
Eureka - I think I found one: Welshent.com
Where can i find the video about changing the oil filter? I need to change the oil+ filter on my 1988 xj6 daimler :) Thank you for the great instruction! Greetings from Austria
Here's a link to it. It's in an XJS but same procedure. Thanks for watching 😊

I would not advise to pre fill the filter. unless you want oil everywhere....
It works if you fill about half of it
