what temp are you soldering at? generally there will be some fumes every time you solder but the iron will usually have a factory coating of flux that does make a lot of smoke on first use. also about the smell and colour, that is strange. smell is probably whatever solder you use. what temp are you soldering at? how is the soldering iron holding up? I was thinking of upgrading mine to something like this.
