I'm pushing 70 and remember and purchased the vinyl when it was released. It was understandable but less so without hearing Mark's explanation.
When we returned from Vietnam, which was a real waste, including my cousin who drove his troop carrier over a tank mine. Thankfully I was able to attend his funeral.
Mark is extremely talented. For us in the US, HF has made the subject matter very plain.
Mark's guitar playing is extraordinary, however, to me the long solos somewhat mask the lyrics and their meaning.
One reactor stated he would have preferred Tim sing it similar to "My Maria" he did with Austin. That would have ruined it, in my opinion. In the song, Tim is a dying soldier saying farewell to his comrades and questioning the logic of war. Maintaining a deep but airy low volume sound reminds me of death.
I ran a government cemetery for 16yrs before I retired. This hit me HARD.

I forgot what I intended to say!? (I go into a room, can't remember why I'm there, walk out and realize it was the restroom.)
If Mark Knopfler did a collaboration like Don McLean, Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys, Lee Greenwood, and others, that would be surely something.

    • @MrIncrediible1
      @MrIncrediible1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Thank you so much for sharing your story, intermenater.
I haven't heard My Maria yet, so I'll have to wait to understand whether it would have ruined it or not.
"Maintaining a deep but airy low volume sound reminds me of death." Well freakin said. WOW. I can't even imagine the emotional stories you have from running the cemetery. Thanks for being kind and hanging out!

This, to me, is a hymn to the dying and deceased. All the boys lost on a field so far away from home. Scared, lonely and soon to be “home”. This is hauntingly beautiful, I cried through the whole thing. It is a stand alone. Totally different from the first one.

This is the Club For Five arrangement, sent to Home Free with their blessings. However, Home Free made it their own during the "echo" sequences. Tuukka the grand bass from Club For Five is one of Tim's inspirations.

The wind noise, of course, is Adam Rupp's contribution to the song, as well as his beautiful tenor singing voice. No drums, no cymbals, just the haunting sound of the wind blowing. Once again his contribution to the percussion of a song is spot on, and enhances the feeling of the great harmonies of the group.

Tim and Chance both showed how powerful a gentle, breathy tone can be. And the harmonies carrying such strength and added emotion have had me in tears and shivers the past few days! I'm obsessed with the overall sound and meaning behind this song. Home Free has once again paid homage to our soldiers and in doing this song, they've opened conversations across the globe! I absolutely can not watch this without shedding tears. Thanks again and new subscriber here and cant wait for more Home Free.

Thank you for caring enough to get the backstory on the original. I was around for the original. I always thought it was powerful. Knoffler's guitar work is brilliant. This interpretation takes it to another level, and to be honest, I don't miss the guitar. As with most versions done a capella, I can pay attention to the lyrics. So beautiful. Not necessarily better, but different, and relavant to today.

There are those of us who put on a military uniform and answered our nation's call to arms. The lyrics reach our psyche at a depth we knew not existed.
There are those of you who stand on the front lines of this internal Battle For America. I know the lyrics hit you deeply as well. Continue the battle but stay safe.
Finally, there are you who are not military, police, firefighters, or EMTs, by your fight is against division. You rise every day to seek better ways to bring unity to our land. God bless you!
It is written in the starlight and every line in your palms:. We are fools to wage war on our brothers and everyone is our sibling.

I have always loved this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural bass was awesome & so were all the guys doing 5 part harmonies.

The suffering and loss of our soldiers is the reason for anti-war sentiments. The two can’t be separated. I appreciated your reaction to this video. You can always count on Home Free for significant messages in their music. You really want to check out their original Undivided …excellent as always. Brothers in Arms has become my favorite because it is so powerful and moving. The minor chords they use make this very haunting and evokes emotion. Welcome to the HF Rabbit Hole! Enjoy the journey.

After watching and listening to your reaction, I really hope you'll do more from Home Free! I subbed after this! All the other reactors broke it down and commented way too much (imo). You just let the experience take wherever it did. Bravo! How Great Thou Art is fantastic, but I also think you'd enjoy Man of Constant Sorrow. I'm a fan of both you and Home Free! Going to see them in concert this February.

Yes, it’s hauntingly beautiful. I love Home Free -their covers are always so good. While I love Dire Straits version it’s guitar driven, this is voice driven. Not better or worse but different, at least to me. I loved Tim’s lows and yes that’s him on the bass in the background too. Loved the black and white film. Tim and Chance look ghost like in the windows. It’s just stunning. And I heard the wind too. So amazing. Good reaction MI.

They are definitely mind blowing! I've been waiting for them to release this one ever since they released their album, Land Of The Free. This song & video is so hauntingly beautiful. I've always loved Knopfler's guitar through this song, so I was very curious to see how HF would handle that. They did not disappoint. So far, you're the only one who noticed the wind. I was really happy to see you pick up on that because I think it adds so much to the overall feel. Great reaction! Thx! Btw: did you read HF's comments in the description on the song?

Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥

I am late to this review of "Brothers in Arms" but I appreciate your reaction, especially since you have knowledge of the Dire Straits original. So many reactors have no understanding of the original song or the deep emotional context of the words. If you have any connection to the sacrifice by soldiers throughout history you will be affected by the Home Free version of this song. This hits me hard every time I hear it. Thanks for your reaction.

This song is too haunting. I love Home Free, but I'm in need for things to lighten up. This is absolutely my least favorite song of theirs. I understand and completely comprehend it. But, I'm tired of this version of Home Free that is so depressing. I'm ready for Home Free that makes me take all of my worries away and makes me smile. Where are you Happy Home Free?? We miss you.

  • @patdavis6383

it is a song that is anti-war, but NOT anti-soldiers.
It isn't blaming them for the wars (as happened in real life in the backlash to the Vietnam war that happened in the USA), just declaring them, futile, wasteful and pointless.
Reading between the lines, I guess it wants to turn everybody into conscientious objectors.
If nobody is prepared to fight, on either side, the politicians will have to find other solutions to their problems, and other means of achieving their objectives, rather than throwing away lives.
