20 Million People Can’t Afford to Pay the Electric Bill

  • Roughly 20 million households in the U.S. - one out of six homes - are behind on their utility bills. As of August, these families owe about $16.1 billion in total, with an average amount owed of $788 - and the consequences of this could be dire, especially as home heat costs are expected to reach their highest level in over 10 years.

    CA Governor Newsom announced back in the summer of 2022 that he signed legislation to ban all gas powered vehicles sold in CA by 2035. Couple of days or so later during the heat wave, CA told citizens not to charge their electric cars during peak hours as to not put strain on the electric grid.

    What most people need to understand about EV batteries is they degrade year by year. So that 250 miles of range when new, slowly goes down year by year. I own an auto repair shop in RI and we see this. For example, a Nissan Leaf that is 10 years old currently gets about 35 miles of range (it was about 90-100 when new) So throw in cold weather and that brings it down even further.

    I agree with New Mexico saying how can we maintain the chargers in rural areas. Most states can't even maintain the public rest stops with working toilets, toilet paper, or regular maintenance. Utah did a smart thing to address some of the maintenance issues by putting in waterless urinals. At least we know they will still function.

Eventually they sign a waiver on the computer telling us to leave their package and that ups is not liable if the package gets stolen. Everything is true, that u can’t cheat the system. U can cheat it once but after that it’s pretty hard.

      Long ago when I delivered pizza, we didn't have that so much, but the computer would let me put in special delivery instructions. I would go back in and add that after my delivery. So all those homes that are hard to find, next time they order using that phone number, the receipt would automatically print out with their special delivery instructions. That was one of several great features about going from paper to computer. The other was, being able to actually read the box stickers.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wrong. There is very little positive I can say about hybrids. The stupid hybrid failed to get rid of most of the parts that can wear out and break. Paying more money up front for slightly better gas mileage. The one thing I have heard positive about hybrids is that they helped keep the dream of the electric car alive.
      I like that the EVs are very quiet and have no gears to shift. There is not even a reverse gear, because unlike ICE, the electric motor actually can spin in reverse. However, EVs clearly are not for everybody, if you do not have a convenient place at home to recharge then most any benefit is negated. EVs are nowhere near ready for prime-time. There never was any valid excuse for an EV mandate. And "climate change" is fake-science and CO2 is plant food.

    I thought this idea years ago. Standardize all electric car batteries so they can be swapped out with a fresh battery when the charge is low. It's like the propane tank exchange concept. Electric fork lifts in warehouses does this now.
    The stations then recharges the exchanged batteries to be then replaced into the next customer that needs a charge. In and out in 5 minutes vs an hour to charge.

      That does not seem feasible at all. Do you have any idea how heavy those batteries are? Just how many bolts would have to be loosened? What happens when somebody has a battery not properly secured and it falls off or something over-stresses and bends? Would you want the failing 7-year-old battery swapped onto your 1-year-old EV? And if I understand right, the battery structure now may even be merged with the structure of the car. Not every easy then to separate the two. And right after smart-phone batteries are no longer easily swappable? And that was only for the very same shape battery and similar phone model.
      What do propane tanks have to do with anything? Just your basic propane tank when purchased in bulk, probably doesn't even cost $5. Not the same at all. And a quick visual inspection might be enough to tell if a rusty propane tank needs to be disposed of and not just keep recirculating it again and again.

      @@Tonymanero1960 Thinking outside the echo chamber. The US AID to Ukraine is a loan that has to be paid back. Fact-checker: Most of the aid offered Ukraine is internal or industry purchased and has a BENEFIT IN SOME WAY, TO THE UNITED STATE. US policy since the founding fathers has been to encourage industry by purchasing from US sources everything from snow shoes to salt pork, and after the Civil War purchasing regulations often required that the US purchase from within its own economy for things like steel rails or canon, except when there was no equivalent source, such as Armstrong or Krupp Cemented armor. So that accounts for most of the 33 billion - the US transferring older or retried weapons, new weapons purchased from US contracts on existing material, and paying off US suppliers who have extended Ukraine credit. 2nd The next part is the REDUCTION of tariffs on steel by Ukraine, which costs the US money but Ukraine is using that steel to purchase US products and the US benefits because our steel is tight right now.

    I think transitioning to electric cars is a lot like transitioning from your job to starting your own business. What we need to do is get to a point where we have 2 systems that can each on their own take care of 100% of the capacity: gas, which we have now, and electric. When we are redundant in that fashion where we have so much excess, only then would we be ready to even consider such a thing. It's generally a better idea to work from a position of surplus than scarcity.

    I think it is even worse situation with the EVs especially if you look at the existing ancient power grid infrastructure. In CA, the existing power grid is so old and outdated that every time there is heat wave that hits the state, entire city blocks go without power. This is common occurrence every year as even Edison publishes which zip codes will go through the power off rotation lottery system. We are told to conserve energy, use as little power in peak hours, yet CA is promoting EVs which gobble several kwh each on charger. For now, only ~ 3% of all cars in CA are EVs. By 2035, all cars sold supposed to be EVs. A disaster in making.

    The whole push to replace all gas cars with electric in my opinion is complete nonsense. I own a golf cart repair shop so I am very familiar with electric powered vehicles, and I actually much prefer them to gas. The problem is when it comes to automobiles the whole philosophy the industry has is at odds with the actual use case of EVs.
    The main problem is that they are trying to make EVs have comparable driving range to ICE cars which means they have to use massive battery packs to achieve this. This is incredibly wasteful considering all the rare materials (lithium, cobalt, etc) and would not even be feasible at the propsed scale due to the limited amount of these resources. They are also difficult to recycle, which combined with the fact most electricity is still generated using fossil fuels means EVs have a worse environmental impact than ICE.
    It would be far more practical to replace half of cars with a smaller golf cart type EV which could be used for around town trips, and have a second ICE vehicle for longer journeys. If the politicians actually cared about the environment they would then build an adequate electric rail network with stations that are within range of these small EVs, so it would be possible to get around without burning any fuel.
    Most golf carts use lead batteries which last for around 5 years, can be infinitely recycled, and are universal so can be purchased about anywhere and only run about $800 for a complete set. There are lithium carts as well but those batteries are considerably smaller than the ones needed for cars. And electric trains don't need batteries at all since they can draw their power from the track.
    In my opinion the whole electric car push seems to be motivated not by environmentalism but consumerism. It doesn't take a genius to see the supposed benefits don't add up, however by going down that path you now force everyone who owns a car to go and buy a new one. Electric cars also have to be replaced every 10 years since the batteries will be dead and cost more than the cars value to replace. This of course is great news for the auto manufacturers, which is why the majority of them are actually pushing for EVs

    • @FloridaGirl-
      @FloridaGirl- ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly agree. This “green deal” isn’t about being green at all!! Congo mines around two-thirds of the world's cobalt, an ingredient in lithium-ion batteries, and is Africa's leading producer of copper. Demand for the minerals is rising to power electric vehicles and electronic devices.
      i watched a HORRIFIC video on these mining towns too in Africa. Where they are mining this colbart. It was aweful! Kids the whole town work there and the place is COVERED EVERYWHERE in this colbart dust. They live, eat, and breath it. With no safety equiptment ppe for these people. Many bad health problems from it all. It’s no way about being green! Except for $$$$ and becoming slaves! It was eye opening.

    I love my tesla. But 99% of people have no idea how much power a car uses every day. The infrastructure is nowhere near ready to handle even a doubling of EV'S on the road. The next few years are going to be very interesting

    • @TM-173
      @TM-173 ปีที่แล้ว

      How many miles do you get per charge? I see Teslas on the road but always pass them; I assume they don't want their battery to die out too soon so they drive them like grandmas

    • @Orion801airsoft
      @Orion801airsoft ปีที่แล้ว

      @LM battery pack is 75kwh. Charge to 80% so I start at 60kwh. But you really don't want to go below 20% regularly. So you really have about 45kwh of range. In the winter, you are using a lot of power to heat the cabin and battery. So it's like 300 watts per mile.
      45 ÷ 0.3kwh = 150miles .
      About 200 miles in the summer
      Obviously you can get more range using more of the battery's capacity, but that's the best way to keep the long term health of the battery

      If the HEAP program is only going to dish out $20 for one month so the recipient can qualify for other programs, HEAP is going to be extremely short of paying people's bills. HEAP is the way to pay utilities directly. If there was a back bill signup, you'd have tens of millions forwarding their arrears to HEAP, and Congress would balk at paying the $20+ billion to the utilities. If they rent, they can be evicted for not paying their utilities once they get shut off. If landlords won't pay the utilities, everybody gets evicted.
