Very good Chris. Agree with everything you say. I stack our wood because our woodyard is in our village. I do the bulk of the processing elsewhere and bring it to the yard to be stacked and dried. Then I load it and sell it. I like the idea of bins but by stacking it people like it. Around our village it is seen as a bit of a sculpture or art piece. If I ever end up with a woodyard out of town I will go to bins. Amen.

The Bureau has been eliminated in cost cutting gov't moves. The etymology of "face cords" is a whole 'nother subject.
Stacking bark down is a drying mode. Stacking bark up is a storing mode. I had 20m3 done in our summer cottage stacked bark down 1,5 years ago and now I took them home and stacked bark up. Because all of them couldn't fit in shed. This is very old way to handle firewood. In old days firewood was cut , split and stacked in forest during winter time. And bark down. Next summer they took firewood to home and stacked bark up. In April and May you got most of the water out this way.
Chris, all great points. I remember way back when you would cut 1 day, split the next, and then finish on the 3rd day stacking. The test run of the first bin was shortly after you went to Bert’s if I recall correctly as well it was a suggestion from a subscriber. In Northern Michigan we call a "Full Cord" a " Loggers Cord". I Number 4. I can put more Wood in my wood shed when it's stacked in rows. You can Leave it outside if you want to Dig it out of the snow all winter.
I did enjoy your explanation of The measurement system. I have A great supplier that delivers my Wood, he is extremely honest And always delivers quality wood. When we first started burning Wood in the late 80's we had Some shady wood guys so I Had to get educated about Measuring wood. We burn Anywhere from 12 to 15 " Full" chords a year. It's easy Because it is 10 full chords to A semi trailer or a " pup". We try not to " touch" our Wood too many times. 😂 Lol.
Following your example with the big piles, I made two piles for myself one is mixed hardwood and the other one is red Oak. I started these piles this past December to my surprise even the red Oak is dry already.
Chris I hear your point about the big firewood producers that pile the wood up and sell it. I see it all the time here in Connecticut. I am selling bundles of wood now and my customers love it. they order bulk firewood from local firewood producers and their complaint is the firewood is not dry.Here in Connecticut stacking piles of firewood and expecting it to dry, I’m sorry but just doesn’t work. out there in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa ,Nebraska I can see How it would be a great way to dry firewood in the open plain.

Stacking isn't too bad. In my part of the Adirondacks, there isn't much "flat land" to just build bins, although that would be better. I use totes (loose and stacked), but stacking is what we do mostly. I kind of use it to de-stress in the evenings from my regular job. I've just started making more TH-cam videos and have an appreciation for your editing!

I'm currently stacking my wood at the moment. I don't own a tractor or I would use the totes to move it but I'm thinking of buying a trailer to just throw it on once it's split and then move next to our house during the winter.
Nine hundred and ninety ninth 'thumbs up'. I love stacking my wood as I like to be creative - my logs are not all uniform shape and size and it's like making a giant 3-D jigsaw. Also, on occasions I've made patterns on the visible face, using wood of different colours and textures to make pretty shapes. I stack to keep it tidy, as I don't have the space to pile it up like you do. Also, yes, the exercise is good for me - I think I'll go and do some work now and WON'T watch another of your vids now - lol. Tomorrow, I will!!
I stack for myself if I stack to the roof on the on both sides of the pole barn is almost 240 cords never gonna stack it that high but nice to have the space, also kinda use it as a wind break. Had to chuckle at the cubic meter comment. Reminds me of that SNL skit about george washington and measurements
I stack in rows as close to the OWB so I can plow snow right up to the row I'm burning. Haystacks grow fungus and strange mold just a couple feet down so that's a climate thing. I burn totes first before the ground is buried in snow as they freeze to the ground and plowing enough space for empty ones is a lot of added work. But, all the wood I sell, no stacking. I can't think of a better way for my own OWB other than get rid of it!
I have been doing both stacks and piles for decades... In my woodyard it depends on type of wood and how green it is during processing that determines if it gets stacked or piled. I am currently only short about $875,000 of not having to ever touch my wood.
Yeah I’ve piled wood for years and the stuff on the bottom and middle doesn’t really dry and gets moldy with fungus, but I’m in the woods with little sun.

I think if you start your bin with green wood, that's the wet wood that sits in the core of the pile. If you start your bin with dry dead standing logs, you'll have a different outcome. Also, a massive open field like Chris has helps as well
@@Dorchwoods also depends on what type of soil you are piling on. I dump off a conveyor onto the ground. I have pretty gravelly ground but I also leave the bark on the ground each year. I sell the good splits and anything that has dirt or other crap on it just goes into my OWB. My cones are about 20' high and 30' diameter. My yard is on a bit of a hill and we have lots of wind and no trees nearby. I used to dump onto skids but it just made a mess due to the weight of a 20' cone.
I did a couple times over the past years...it dries great. BUT if your wood is on the ground and in the shade with no air flow....it will not dry and it will be moldy.
I stack bark up. When the wood is drying the wood separates from the bark, one sure sign it’s ready to burn. I then chuck the bark into the woods and bugs have nowhere to hide. Less bark, less ash. All my bagged wood I sell is bark free if possible. Just my observation.
My experience has been that dead standing oak dries much faster than live oak. No idea why, but it does for me in my woodyard. Can burn such wood within a few months versus a year for live oak.

Trial and error taught me to stack two long rows with space between and it really helps with drying. Chris, just curious, I know in several videos you've mentioned that leaving the wood loose inside your very large bins, even through several seasons (including winter), has no effect on the wood and the wood is fine, but I'm curious to know if that is the case because your turn around time to sell wood is short? Perhaps like a year? But what if you didn't sell any wood for a few years how would that wood fair under the elements for extended periods of time?
Im working on getting enough palletts to make my own bin. Im always a year ahead on my wood so my plan is to have this winter and next in my woodshed near my house and then everything else will be put in the bin by my processing area until time to move to the shed. Just trying to figure out a size right now. I dont want so much wood in the bin that I never reach the bottom stuff. Any tips on size? 3x3, 4x4 palletts etc on how much it would hold?
I know some old Finlanders that pile their split wood that looks like a fat teepee to a flat peak top up to 8 to 10 feet. It dries from top to boottom within 5 to 6 months. Open area so wind can ooze through it. Just saying one way to try it. Sure you've seen them...maybe not. 8 outta 10 Professor.
If your brother stacks wood because customers come and pick up their wood from his wood yard, how are they picking up the wood? Are they chucking all their wood in trucks? Are they in IBC totes and they take the totes with them? Are they on pallets that are enclosed and tractor lifted into the customer's truck?
Only stack at customer. I stack some here and absolutely hate doing it. Over 50% of newbies who call me and say they want a cord they actually mean a face cord. If both parties are happy that’s all that matters! AMEN! 🙏
Chris, how much firewood does the warden allow to be stored at your place? I'm only allowed one full cord per DNR regulations. But in the woodyard, can have as much as I have room to stack wood.
I only keep a face cord or two at home...but i have had as much as 12 at one time before my business and the farm. Now I just bring more home when I need it. Space is an issue!
Who are the wardens you guys refer to? Local council officials that police what you can do on your property or are you all renting from housing associations??

I've got a question for you, I have a stack of about 7 cords mostly oak in logs and they have been sitting there over a year. Once I cut and split it how long should it dry?
Oak dries very slow and in log form even slower...get it cut split and off the ground and the thinner you split it the faster it will dry....about 1-2 years depending on the thickness of the splits.Get a moisture meter and test it every couple months and once it is below 20% on the INSIDE ( split a piece) ...it will be ready.
Dude, if i had the space, sun and wind you have, I would 100% make mountains of wood. Unfortunately the wifey would kill me if i did that in our front yard😂😂. Maybe if you talk her into it, she'll let me 🤜🤛
Stacking looks great, you get a lot of exercise and it saves space! Trust me on this one...until you get more space or another wood yard do what she want...she is the boss! I have 39 years experience in keeping my wife happy.....I mostly fail.

A "cord" of wood is a legal term. If you sell a cord of wood, it is a legally specific amount of wood. A face cord or anything else is whatever you want it to be.
The reason i stack my wood? - my yard is full of termites, I stack my wood in a single row on top of a sheet of corrugated iron, that gives me a clear boundary of at least 15cm of steel sheet visible around the edge of the stack so i can see if the toothy mongrels are getting in to my wood pile!

No they are NOT articulating forks. I would need 800 IBC totes...Bert sells them for $40 each that equals $32,00 just for totes....no thanks.

Chris, just curious, I know in several videos you've mentioned that leaving the wood loose inside your very large bins, even through several seasons (including winter), has no effect on the wood and the wood is fine, but I'm curious to know if that is the case because your turn around time to sell wood is short? Perhaps like a year? But what if you didn't sell any wood for a few years how would that wood fair under the elements for extended periods of time?
I sell it all in 1-2 years. If I did not ..once it was dry ...I would cover it.

Im working on getting enough palletts to make my own bin. Im always a year ahead on my wood so my plan is to have this winter and next in my woodshed near my house and then everything else will be put in the bin by my processing area until time to move to the shed. Just trying to figure out a size right now. I dont want so much wood in the bin that I never reach the bottom stuff. Any tips on size? 3x3, 4x4 palletts etc on how much it would hold?
It depends on how much wood you will put in it ...but you could just go 2 wide by say 5-6 long and add on as you need to???
I burn 4-5 full cord a season so that would be about the size. A bit more as backup would probably be good
would it better to stack wood in heavy tree area? we get not alot wind, just breeze usually. Just wondering.

In the open is the best not under trees, piled loose off the ground on pallets is what works for me to dry wood faster and better.
I know some old Finlanders that pile their split wood that looks like a fat teepee to a flat peak top up to 8 to 10 feet. It dries from top to boottom within 5 to 6 months. Open area so wind can ooze through it. Just saying one way to try it. Sure you've seen them...maybe not. 8 outta 10 Professor.

If your brother stacks wood because customers come and pick up their wood from his wood yard, how are they picking up the wood? Are they chucking all their wood in trucks? Are they in IBC totes and they take the totes with them? Are they on pallets that are enclosed and tractor lifted into the customer's truck?
Hand loading onto trailers mostly.

Chris, how much firewood does the warden allow to be stored at your place? I'm only allowed one full cord per DNR regulations. But in the woodyard, can have as much as I have room to stack wood.
I only keep a face cord or two at home...but i have had as much as 12 at one time before my business and the farm. Now I just bring more home when I need it. Space is an issue!
Who are the wardens you guys refer to? Local council officials that police what you can do on your property or are you all renting from housing associations??

I've got a question for you, I have a stack of about 7 cords mostly oak in logs and they have been sitting there over a year. Once I cut and split it how long should it dry?
Oak dries very slow and in log form even slower...get it cut split and off the ground and the thinner you split it the faster it will dry....about 1-2 years depending on the thickness of the splits.Get a moisture meter and test it every couple months and once it is below 20% on the INSIDE ( split a piece) ...it will be ready.

Stacking looks great, you get a lot of exercise and it saves space! Trust me on this one...until you get more space or another wood yard do what she want...she is the boss! I have 39 years experience in keeping my wife happy.....I mostly fail.

A "cord" of wood is a legal term. If you sell a cord of wood, it is a legally specific amount of wood. A face cord or anything else is whatever you want it to be.
In some states yes but here in the mid-west we all use face cords and know it is 1/3 of a cord.
Reason #4: to scandalize those who obsess over touches, or who are allergic to any kind of physical effort.

The reason i stack my wood? - my yard is full of termites, I stack my wood in a single row on top of a sheet of corrugated iron, that gives me a clear boundary of at least 15cm of steel sheet visible around the edge of the stack so i can see if the toothy mongrels are getting in to my wood pile!
Good reason! We do not have them here...-20 -30 for months below zero keeps them away.
