    What an absolutely legendary effort! As an ex Antarctic Expeditioner myself I can atest to the total unpredictability of Antarctic Wx. So to do such a massive rebuild out of a bunch of tents on the plateau like that is pretty unbelievable.
    Those guys make McGyver look like an amateur!

    What an awesome video of the work that went on in repairing this beautiful aircraft. I have about 1000 hrs on the DC3 and those 1830's were not as good as the turbine engines on this aircraft. Kudos to the maintenance crew. you were exceptional.

    She has been at our local airport (Eastleigh/Southampton) in the UK for a few days having maintenance. I went to watch her take off this morning she went into Humberside which is where she seems to be based at currently. Her livery is still almost the same but a penguin has been added to the tail and in the blue upper part of the fuselage is a jagged white image which I think is supposed to represent a scene from the Antarctic.

    Great video. i have actually met the pilots that crash landed the plane in Antarctica this year, great guys by the way. i was there this year and i flew home with the IL 76.

    She is back at Eastleigh, landed today after a flight from Malmo, I went to see her land. She has a new paint scheme now, still predominately red white and blue but it's a little plainer now, the Penguin has gone as has the mountain scene, although there is a smalleer picture which I think is supposed to be snow covered mountains, and there are the words white desert and Antarctica on the side of fuselage. It's nice to se her again.

    Ftp2leta: to replace this aircraft would cost about 7 million. I believe there was also an obligation to remove. You can't just leave stuff in Antarctica. Although that's hard to believe if you visit the Russian base...

    Amazing how people can work in these conditions! Would it not be more cost effective to simply scrap the plane?

      Maybe, but true aircraft lovers would never let such a wonderful aircraft go to waste like that.........and thats a very good thing

      It truly depends on the type of plane and the amount of damage. But considering what it cost to convert one of these DC3's along with the fact that you just cant get good air frames to use anymore it made complete sense to salvage this one. Had this been a Twin Otter or something fairly common they may have just cut it up and hauled it out.Although with how little damage that was done that is doubtful. No matter what they had to get it out of there and that costs money,by repairing it you offset the salvage costs by saving the plane ;-) I've seen cases where it's even been cheaper to fly a damaged plane out only to be scrapped afterwards.
      Put it this way, would you spend $100 grand to scrap and remove a million plus dollar plane or $200 grand to fly it out and fully repair it ;)
      On a side note a De Haviland Otter or other modern plane most likely would have sustained a lot more damage compared to the rugged DC-3 and more than likely there would've been fatalities involved.

      A new BT-67 is over $7 Million US. That was worth doing.

    Amazing recovery although the recovery of Lydia was much difficult then this one.

    @radiopicture You obviously have never flown one, or know what the old Goon does around the world. Not many conventional gear planes of this size anywhere. Flown in and out of McMurdo numerous times in a jet (C-141) and typed with a lot of hours in a DC-3.

    Great video. So back in Canada they parted out a DC3 for parts to salvage Mia. Was the air frame in Canada past allowable hours or itself damaged beyond repair?
    Also when Mia crashed and shed its props. Why was the fuselage not damaged, chance or?

    • @TactlessWookie
      @TactlessWookie 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not an old DC3. That's a Basler BT-67. Rebuild from the ground up into that turbo powered ship. More than $7 million USD to buy new today.
