I feed my mealworms a little bit of hand rearing formula. They like it.

Hello Oliver. I have never kept Hawfinches but with all the birds i breed i store the live mealworms in dry eggfood and kale. The idea being to get the mealworms gut- loaded. Right or wrong is it worth giving it a try?

Very sad about the hawfinches Oli. I am not sure what they would eat in the wild at this time of year...maybe some unripe nuts? Our hazels are starting to ripen well and there are berries on things like dogwood, honeysuckle and elder, it's a real changeover part of the year.

Sometimes it is nature just telling you that she is in control . I do respect nature . No matter what you try it will always win .

You’re spot on there David, that’s always a consideration when things are lost. I did question whether it was genetic, even if the parent birds could possibly be siblings.

I think it might go a little deeper that we think ? If we take nature it is the strongest yes ? so if we are breeding birds might it that hens will nest but might want to do that with the cock with a different song , one we cannot hear . It might just be one we cannor hear the difference ? . After all they are all trying to breed their next generation . I have found when i was breeding Redpolls in the 1980s/2000s if i bred too close it sometimes had dire results + some of their off spring would be weaker also i think as a result , in fact let to unfilled eggs + the birds losing their interest in rearing their young . I bought a pair of Siskins which i had that happen to they threw them out & abandoned them , both from the same person ? so we will see next year . You Oliver are breeding some of the not so much seen breeds ie Hawfinches , personally i think it was nothing to do with your feeding regime , or your methods , which i think are top class . But where we differ is i do not give my birds any suppilments , only protein powder . They are fed though with about 60 different seeds . I hope you find this helpful

Can i say it might be genetic , we try to evaluate as to us , but birds have a surval instinct we have sadly lost . I do not use any products only naturaul to birds . Nothing . I do not feed my Repolls anything , other than natural food

I am a novice breeder of greenfinches,I have a adult hen I bred last year from a pair of visual normals, she is yellow,I paired her to a normal cock and she has given me two light yellow chicks does this mean the cock bird is a lutino carrier,I'm not up on genetics.
