I really wanted to try a Rhodes piano for some time... They are not cheap these days. Mine was not cheap. Nor light. These things are heavy bastards. It does only one thing too. Like my acoustic junk piano (which I love dearly). It FEELS like a piano too. There's something about sitting in front of a mechanical instrument (guitar, drums, piano, etc) that just feels 'right' to play. I don't always get that feeling in front of a synthesizer, as much as I love them.
A friend of mine drove 5 hours to drop it off to me (well, to sell it to me). I am very grateful. They're vaccinated. I'm not - so it was nice not to have to traverse the realm to collect this. I let them into my studio to jam out on my other gear (alone - you know, COVID and all). I think they had fun for a while. Then we spoke outside. It was nice seeing another human, even briefly. I mean, obviously I see my wife and daughter. They're enough for me, but I do enjoy a visit. It felt a bit like Gandalf coming from the unknown to visit me in the Shire (but lets be real - it's not quite Shire-like here in Minnesota). Come to think of it, I can't see Hobbits much enjoying Minnesota, much too cold. Although, I could imagine building a home underground and basically just living down there and not coming up during winter. That doesn't sound half-bad to me.
Well anyway - this is like, just me improvising. I had no idea what I was doing so bear with the mistakes. There are a few.
And I guess I need to welcome my Seventy Three to my studio. Hello. You are here. Enjoy your stay.
Absolutely beautiful! Both the instrument and the playing. There’s just no replicating the real Rhodes (or an acoustic piano) sound. Greetings from Finland, which I’m told, isn’t entirely unlike Minnesota. :)
Thanks Antti! My guess is Finland has better healthcare than we do in the US/Minnesota... everything is private (for maximum profits). We do have access to GoFundMe though.
Anyway, yes, I think what you meant was in the climate. The landscape (from what I can see) is a bit different - probably a bit more beautiful there. But I don't know - I actually love our "North Shore" which is very pretty with Lake Superior!
What a bearish sound and well played. Hints of Vangelis.
Thanks for sharing. 😊
Thanks Bob Z!
I've had the opportunity to play around on one in the past, and you're so right - it's magical. Instantly in a different world. This was great. Enjoyed the story too.
Yeah, I love the keys on it. Just feels like a piano. Very much in love with it.
Thanks :)
Gorgeous. It's in the right hands.
Thanks Vincent :)
Such a dreamy sound
Agreed. Love the Rhodes!
Congrats on your new studio addition, sounds beautiful. Looks in nice shape, I need to show mine some love !
Thanks! Indeed, it's in great condition.
beautiful noodling, thank you
Thanks!
Gorgeous
Thanks!!!
I just picked up a Mark II Rhodes to restore. Very excited about it. Gonna be lots of work, but it will be worth it.
Oh nice! That sounds excellent!!! Good luck
Thanks for sharing! This was great. :-)
Thanks Jeremy!
sweet sounds
also the description was a good read!
every video got a little story to it, i like that :)
Thanks! I've been trying to provide some stories when I have them :)
Awww I'm so happy for you. Yes it only does one thing but that one thing it does better than any emulation. That tone is something that the emulations and the clones just fall short on. So much can be done with that tone as you are doing in this demonstration. Congratulations. Definitely a keeper
Yes, I am 100% glad I got the Rhodes. It is absolutely a lovely instrument!
@@MIDERA I've just scored on one just like yours, a Rhodes stage piano 88 from 1975. One owner, never been gigged only been in a studio so it's practically mint. As we have conversed on how we both love the sound of the Rhodes piano I just thought I'd let you know and share the joy. I love to chill to your Ambient masterpieces. Keep up the great work
Oh congrats! That’s a great find. I’ve seen a few this year that were quite a bit cheaper than the one I bought (even the 88key), oh well. I just remind myself that I love it and it doesn’t matter. It’s still one of the best things in my studio.
Congrats again!!
@@MIDERA Thanks. I'm excited to get it and hook it up in the studio. My one isn't cheap either but it's a full size, well kept, never gigged, well serviced example. I'm genuinely excited like I'm a child again with this one lol
Wow, this is really wonderful. Please do an album of ambient Rhodes music!
Thanks! I should do something like that for sure!
@@MIDERA but don't forget to do your album of RPG music on the SK-30.
@@kgbinfo Oh yeah... I'd have to redo all those tracks I did since it was live and I f***ed up a bunch. :/
Miss my Rhodes :(
:( Maybe someday you could get another?
This is beautiful! Does your Stage have Tremolo on it? Mine did not (1973 Mark I Stage 88) but I ended up getting the Retro Flyer from Avion Studios.... I love it! Fits right on the Rhodes.
Mine has tremolo because I bought the retro flyer from Avion as well. It’s great, although mine had issues. Avion eventually got me a new one and it’s worked great ever since. It’s amazing.
hello beautiful sound, are you using any effect or reverb?
Yes, it sounds like I’m using Eventide Blackhole. Thanks :)
Lovely sounds thank you. The only problem now is what synth to put on top if it. ;) I keeping changing things got the A Keys on my mkii at the moment. Totally with your sentiments about the comments about mechanical part vs electronic instrument. Key velocity cannot compare to mechanical parts. What reverb and delay did you use? Also I recommend trying out phaser, tremolo and wah-wah pedals with it or just the Zoom CDR70 th-cam.com/video/vhIOz0ltkDQ/w-d-xo.html
I think I'll be putting the Moog Matriarch on top! I used the Strymon DIG and El Cap and Eventide Space. The Rhodes went through a Vintage Vibe Stage preamp - which has a nice tremolo on it.
The Zoom CDR70 sounded fantastic though! I actually just bought a Boss MD-500, I'm interested to hear how that'll sound. But that Zoom sounds great!
Sounds Beautiful!! What effects are you using to make the Rhodes sound spacy??
Probably eventide blackhole VST - normally I put that in the description but I can’t check on my phone right now.
And thank you!!!
It’s so beautiful! Sounds great too. I know what you mean about playing a real piano. I don’t have the space right now but hopefully one day.
Thinking of getting something like a Korg sv2 when I can afford it as I really need a decent weighted keyboard for non synth stuff and the UI looks nice.
Edit: nice riders on the storm style run around 7:40ish
I have the Korg D1 which... is OK. I just need to figure out how to set it up under my desk. It feels good but there is still that disconnect. However, it uses the same keybed as the SV2 and I think it's very nice for a midi controller.
I have learned some music on it, so the problem for me is more one of motivation... I need to be more motivated to learn how to play, than just making random stuff and throwing it up here, lol.
@@MIDERA Yeah, I don’t expect it to totally replace a real piano. There is the convenience though. Would be nice to have both one day.
My grandparents have a real piano and even though it’s in really rough shape (chipped keys, keys that stick, out of tune) no electric keyboard I’ve played really compares to the feeling of playing a “real piano”.
Though, my ex has a Roland fp30 and I loved just sitting down and playing piano for hours on that.
Thanks for your insight on the D1 and the keybed. I feel like the sv2 would help motivate me to practice simply because it looks cool and the ui looks inviting.
