I’ve been a member of Angela Kane for several years and find many of her methods for construction better than most I’ve learned from. Her zip application is by far the best I’ve ever used. Thank you Angela. 😊
Hello Michael, Thank you for your generous comment. Here I have worked out a method that is relatively easy to explain. I'm glad it is proving to be helpful. Thanks again.
This was made so easy to understand. A total beginner could follow and achieve great results. For years I have struggled with men's zippers. I wish I would have seen this a long time ago.
Wow, this really is the definitive guide! I was looking for a video to help me get the right size zipper for my pants pattern. You addressed this right at the beginning when pairing the zippers next to the pattern piece marking! Thank you greatly!
Yes, the order of sewing is just not obvious or logical. It's a question of establishing each step and following it to the letter. I still refer to my own guide because however many times I sew a fly zip it's just not committed to memory! Thanks so much for commenting.
Excellent instruction video! I would HIGHLY recommend this video for both intermediate seamsters,--and folks who've completed-and-lost a notebook sample from an intermediate clothing construction class.
Thank you for replying 😊 I have watched many videos in the last month and I have to say that yours are the easiest to follow. You also have a lovely calm voice and that helps a lot. Keep up the great work and thank you once again 😊
+Kari Skinner Thanks Kari. I worked on this quite a lot to get it right. The fly zip is tricky and not logical. I still look up my own instructions every time I sew jeans!
Thank you so much. Fly zips are tricky and I follow my own guide often, just to remind myself of the order, if I haven't made any jeans for a while. Thank you very much for your comment.
Angela thank you for your videos they are inspiring me to sew. Just to let you know I am a novice at this and would like to make some gym clothes will you be doing any videos on this any time soon .
Hello hya, I don't specifically do sports clothes but I do have quite a lot of videos on sewing jersey th-cam.com/play/PLU_hpXrimvBdZVciA1i1a9p4mVxcs_qmr.html th-cam.com/play/PL7B8967963C53017E.html And of course you can find the patterns on my site angelakane.com/sewing_patterns/ I hope that helps.
Also, a more severe problem: there must be something wrong with the measurements starting at 01:50 - you want the teeth of the zipper to end up 13 mm from the center front. You then mark a chalk line 16 mm from the center front to align the right edge of the zipper tape to. This would only work, if your zipper tape is 3 mm wide, which it isn't. Obviously, the distance for the chalk line depends on the width of the zipper tape. The correct distance would be "desired distance between center front and zipper teeth" + " width of zipper tape", maybe minus 2 or 4 mm to compensate for the fact that the stitching is about 1 or 2 mm from the teeth.
Pricilla Adzoe Hello Pricilla, have you seen this video Sewing Patterns - Flat Pattern Drafting, How to Take Measurements - th-cam.com/video/EmLThmehn7M/w-d-xo.html. There are two more videos on pattern drafting here on TH-cam and on my site Sewing eBooks on my site - angelakane.com/sewing_ebooks/
Gather you mean the free hand sewing arm. I do use it sometimes. I'm inclined to have my machine a little further away on my sewing table. It needs to be nearer the edge for the arm. Thank you so much for the compliment.
@@angelakanetv that makes sense, but I have known people who are new bernina owners and somewhere along the line didn’t know about it! I’ve been sewing for 50 yrs and started on a bernina 730 that my mom bought used in 1963. Then she bought an 830 in 1981 that I still have and used to teach my kids to sew on and loan to others who want to learn to sew. I have had an 1130 that I sewed a million stitches on, the a 1530 that I still have. I bought a 750 QE (I think) in 2014 that was a piece of junk and traded it in on a 780 (I think) that was also junk. I traded to a friend for help packing when I moved. I’ve since bought a Juki DDL 9000 that I love. And that’s my sewing life’s story! 🤪
hi how are you , i want to know if i buy the selvedge denim Pattern i will receive the e-book in order to know how to sew it , becuase i really dont know how to sew but i want to learn ,and as i can see, you are really good at it
Hi Diego, Yes, if you buy the Selvedge Jeans Pattern from my site you also get the eBook and the video to download and keep although the video is also free to watch on TH-cam. Make sure you also watch the videos on angelakane.com/sewing-jeans/ which relate specifically to the Selvedge Jeans Pattern. Jeans are not the easiest garment to make but I think you will find my videos take you through every step and even a novice will have success. Try making a trial pair in cheap ordinary denim before using your expensive Selvedge Denim. You won't regret it! Thank you so much for leaving a comment.
This is so well done,: clear, understandable and complete. But I have a problem I can't understand. When I am done installing the zip, it is perfect, but after I put the waistband on, the 2 sides of the zipper are different heights! I have done it as shown in the video and also with using a zip long enough to go past the waistline (so I don't have to pass the tab past the zipper foot). I am baffled.
I am trying to make a pair of trousers with some soft linen but the pattern I have has no zip fly front . Do you think your selvege jeans pattern ( the one you demonstrate in this video ) would help ? I am a real beginner and a pensioner ! Thankyou
Hello Jim, I think if you look closely at this video and take note of the fly extension. It's about 1.5" or a little under 4cm wide. The length is 5.5 to 7" or 13 to 17cm in length, curving into centre front before the crotch seam starts to curve. You could add this to your own pattern. Please do try my jeans pattern though, at some stage. You could make this up in other fabrics, it doesn't have to be denim and a lighter weight fabric would be easier for a beginner. angelakane.com/sewing-jeans/ Good luck and thanks for commenting.
It is very helpful, but unless I specifically needed it to look like the fly in a pair of jeans, I would choose an easier way. Have you checked out the video from Silhouette patterns? She sews in a zipper with a lot fewer steps.
Thanks for the clarification Angela. I can add that to my long list of reasons why I don't try to sew my own jeans. (I usually only sew things when I can't find a suitable already-made item to buy somewhere. Climbing pants in this case)
Hello Angela, I have a selection of Free Patterns and various templates - angelakane.com/free_sewing_patterns/. All other patterns are available to paying subscribers for £45 for the first year and then £15pa if you wish to continue. I have around 30 classic patterns to download in 9 sizes - angelakane.com/sewing_patterns. You can also buy individual patterns if you don't want to subscribe to all of them. Thank you for your comment.
Hello, Have you tried clicking on CC (Closed Captions), selecting Auto-translate and choosing your language? It's probably not as clear but might help a little. Bonjour, Avez-vous essayé de cliquer sur CC (Closed Captions), de sélectionner la traduction automatique et de choisir votre langue? Ce n'est probablement pas aussi clair mais pourrait aider un peu.
Zipper guard should cover fly extension, this makes your zip fly much more beautiful from inside. And, I think order is not good, first you you need to sew pocket bags, because it's much more easier to attach left and right separately.

Hello Terri, £45 is for the first year's membership of my site. Members can download over 30 classic sewing patterns in 9 sizes, with instructional videos and ebooks full of diagrams to help beginners. I don't think that is costly. Non subscribers can buy individual patterns, the women's jeans pattern is £10 and the men's selvedge jeans pattern is £12. I hope that is helpful.
Very confusing! I followed steps by step but turned out wrong and then I rewatced it many times still don't get it. With tutorial from others I made it right away.
Hello Metis, I am sorry to hear that. It is a full proof method. I have sold thousands of copies of this jeans pattern and this is one of my highest viewed of all my videos. It may seem illogical when you are doing it but it works. You need to take it one step at a time and follow exactly. Please let me know if you have achieved it ok.

Excellent explanation and video! You’ve taken the mystery out of how to do the jeans zipper. Thank you so much!
Really the best fly zip tutorial on the Internet. Thank you.

Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this. I have been sewing for years but never attempted a fly zipper, you made this seem really easy!

Hi Kurt, Thank you so much. I'm glad you found this useful.
Especially thank you for your recommendation to students.
Angela, This is a great tutorial. There are several possible ways to sew a fly zipper, but I prefer your method best ~ Thanks!

+Luke Thanks Luke, that's really nice of you. I'm glad this video has been useful.
Cleared up a lot of confusion for me, thank you!
Thanks for your comment.
this is THE best video on fly zips!!!
+Kari Skinner Thanks Kari. I worked on this quite a lot to get it right. The fly zip is tricky and not logical. I still look up my own instructions every time I sew jeans!
Thank you very much let me check these out . I would love to sew myself some gym pants trying to keep up with my new years resolution ...to get fit
Very precise and well made tutorial. Easy to follow and understand.
Thank you so much. Fly zips are tricky and I follow my own guide often, just to remind myself of the order, if I haven't made any jeans for a while.
Thank you very much for your comment.
this is a REALLY good video, thank you for sharing it.
Thank you very much, now it is clearly how to sew the zip Fly.
Thank you for taking time to comment.

And of course you can find the patterns on my site angelakane.com/sewing_patterns/
I hope that helps.
Very useful video. Thanks angela.
That's very kind of you to say so. Thanks Sinta.
Thank you for the video, Angela! When you say "Clip to the dot on the left front only", I think you meant the right front.
Also, a more severe problem: there must be something wrong with the measurements starting at 01:50 - you want the teeth of the zipper to end up 13 mm from the center front. Yes, I checked and you are correct. I hope that doesn't confuse everyone. I will add a correction.
Thank you for your feedback.
This is very easy to follow. Thank you.
Clear and to the point! Thank you
Thank you so much! Awesome helpful tutorial
Yesterday I cut really nice fabric into jeans pattern but without these extentions.... so now I have to add them separately...I hope it will work
Good guide 👍💖
