In this video from Jubilee Road I tack a look at the GWR castle set HST. It is formed of 2 Hornby power cars with TTS sound and 4 Hornby MK3s with the new sliding doors. Link to GLR bespoke services: www.glrailways...
the cross country HSTs have a 9-car formation. you can still get the full 1980's intercity experience! very enthusiastic route from penzance to as far as aberdeen. I still remember that horrible day when I arrived at paddington for a trip home and saw 0 HSTs . Nothing can be better than this beauty. Lovely video, I look forward to seeing your HSTs in the future
Great Western railway castle set omg matt love it the sound ain't to bad personally i dont used sound offen but tbh its decent I totally love your layout its brilliant Well done
Great update as per Matt! The scotrail 7cities are running with 4 coaches they do have scope to use 5 but I haven’t seen any up here with 5 coaches! Keep up the good work Matt! Merry Christmas when it comes!
Matthew what a lovely video which reminds me of my younger days watching the 253's even the 254's known today as the class 43's. I loved the start up the centre locking sound the guard's whistle and the 2 tone when it came around the corner. Now both 43005 & 43041 are still with GWR and 43005 is not named but 43041 has a new name plate its St Catherine's Castle. JJ
The Scottish ones currently have 4 coaches but it is intended to lengthen most of them to 5 . I think the coaches are different though . The Scottish ones have a combination first class , buffet and guards compartment . The GWR livery is growing on me . Originally I thought it was too dark and full but it looks quite good . Good video as always
Great video Matt. They run as a 3 and 4 car for GWR and are restricted to 95mph as a 4 car and 75mph as a 3 car. Lovely to work on too between Cardiff and Bristol
Ive been in both the castle class and the 800, and the castles are ifinitely better than the 800s. Standard castle sats are better than 800 castle sets
That is a nice HST set. It's a bit too modern for my layout. Matt, where do you get that high stonewalling from? I have been looking for something a bit higher than the one Metcalfe make. Martin. (Thailand)
The HST isn't a HST without its classic scream when it departs. You should have kept that scream, it sounds nicer because I got used to it in real life as I grew up. The Mk. 3 coaches should still have the man-handled doors, so the windows can be opened to let fresh air in, should the air conditioning break down. The GWR Green livery isn't as nice-looking on a HST, as it is on a Large Prairie Tank or Tender Engine of the steam era, in my opinion. However, I have an affectionate soft spot for the screaming BR Blue & Grey liveried HST.

Actually cross country hst has 7 coaches

Hi matt, these are fantastic locos I've just got one and they are great....
They named the set “castle” after the castles in the southwest they run at 95mph due to less braking on a short set. Great video Matt 😁
Why are they restricted to speed ?
The top notch is disabled as they are used interchangeably with a pair of 2car 158s or occasionally 166s.
@@maxvandenberg6905 due to the shorter formation. it means they have less braking force.
@@dommassey1249 ~ Didn't realise that - I would have thought that the reduction in weight would have compensated for less breaking force?

Great video Matt.

Castle set is 4 coaches if it’s 3 you’ve seen then there’s been an issue with 1 coach on that set!
@@StPetersLayout there's a set running with 3 carriages this week on a Penzance Cardiff service.
Thanks for the info Jonathan
@@StPetersLayout There is a 3 car set running now as well
Lovely set, sounds are not to bad 👍
Thank you
Great video Matt I’m thinking to get hold of some of the sliding door mk3s to go with my train set GWR HST
Yeah you should get some. Thank you David
Scotrail Inter7City HSTs have either 4 or 5 coaches.
good update
Thank you
We wish you a merry Christmas we wish you a merry Christmas we wish you a merry christmas.
And a happy new castle class intro XD

iv been on both and i think the same as you
Have you seen the blue midland pullman hst they look good running around Reading and crewe
yeah i have. Hoping Hornby do it next year
I tried the glr magnetic couplings but they had issues and not a touch on the other ones available.
iv had now problems with them. They work very well for me
I don't think Scotrail have any 5 car sets yet
ow ok thanks
Agree the 800s aren't very comfy even in first class. Seats with not enough padding or side support and lots of running noise too...
yeah they are not the best to travel on
That is a nice HST set. It's a bit too modern for my layout. Matt, where do you get that high stonewalling from? I have been looking for something a bit higher than the one Metcalfe make. Martin. (Thailand)
its made by Noch and i got it from Ebay
Do you remember the Paxton volenta engine
yeah i do. they made a great sound
i agree that the class 800 is not good because i have been on one 3 times and the seats are unconfutable and bright lighting
